@@ruslanshadaev2293 because she taught as if the only ways to have a chord progression is through 5-1 perfect cadences within their respective intervals, how she said G has to go to C, C has to go to F, F has to go to B flat, etc etc. These can be useful for the ends of a phrase and for modulations, but if you ONLY use them like how she says in the video then you lock yourself into a cycle of 5ths chord progression which you definitely don’t want. In reality, you can go from any chord you can think of to any other chord you can think of as long as you know how to do it tastefully. Some of the best music of all time has the weirdest chord progressions but the harmony all ties it together and makes it sound perfect. Rachmaninoff’s music is a perfect example of this especially the second half of the adagio movement of his second symphony.
@@MiloMcCarthyMusic Don't you think "completely wrong" was a bit too much? What she teaches is correct. It wouldn't be correct to say, that this is the only way to make songs and she doesn't say such thing. You can't fit everything in to one lecture.
I think because people today want to appear "intellectual" and such and use all the "jargon" and "buzzwords" and such to appear smart. This lady has the courage to be simple and straight forward. Music theory like she presents is approachable. Most get off on tangents and such. It's almost like the theory becomes more important than the song itself. I have a simple way of always asking myself "yea but do you like the music/song" when confronted with all the razzle dazzle of theory nerds. This lady is very cool.
When I was a wee child back in 2008, people used to say the same about the teaching done in those days. It simply doesn't have anything to do with time. Don't fool yourself
Anton yeah great vidio but this isnt him (sorry cause he is a man not woman) he tries to pretend become a woman. He uploads someone's vlog. Absolutely he can get punishment the way he did.
Here's something to note... This is the "likely" progression of chords, which is useful to those who are sight-reading. If you're a composer, this is a useful guide, but this is not the law of music. Use your ears and do whatever sounds good.
Sometimes it's just really hard to hear the notes to tell which chord it is so I need more information about music theory to get it down lol and well it does help
I love the way this lady teaches. It is so practical! So honest and so real. I studied music theory in hight school and college. I have 3 music degrees ending with a Ph.D. in musicology but nowhere was this practical and useful chord progression technique explained. We were too busy learning Schenkarian analysis. Who cares about the "abstract deep structure" of the music. I would just like to play at song a party. My brother often kids me by introducing me with "This is my brother. He is a doctor but not the kind that helps people." Even in music I am not that helpful when someone asks "can you play a song for us" and I have to say, "Sorry, I don't have my music with me." Karen is a gem and as I near retirement I am going to work on her instruction and try to have some FUN with all the musical knowledge I am supposed to have. God bless her!
Amazingly done, really special lesson (simplicity is so powerful). Of course music theory is a bit more complicated. Progression chords in the traditional harmony works like this: - I can be followed by whatever; - II can be followed by V, III, IV, VI, VII - III can be followed by VI, IV, II, V; - IV can be followed by V, I, VI, II, VII, III; - V can be followed by I, VI, III, IV; - VI can be followed by II, V, IV, III; - VII can be followed by I, VI, III, V. Try those chords progression out and you'll see what they sound. The reason those chords are linked this way is due to research made in past years based on acoustic, aestetic and phycological experiences.
the 7 chord goes to a 3 chord. diminished chords make great transition chords. you can go from G major to G diminished to an F major to F diminished and then to E minor :)
Ya know, you can just tell when an instructor finds happiness in teaching......he/she usually resembles this instructor. She's enthusiastic, she's smiling and she looks like she want to be there doing what she's doing. I think that is what causes the light bulb to come on and the aha moment to happen in the student or at least it did with me. Awesome job teach, I learned a great deal of info, thank you.
This is total gold! In less than 10 minutes, I learnt the 'easy' way to both work out a song I want to play, but also how to crank out some chords over lyrics to really get the guts of a song quickly.
explained in a simple, direct, easy-to-understand way and in an easy-going, friendly, even warm manner. wow what a concept. she could teach so many teachers so much about how to teach.
This video is 11 years old and Im glad I found it. Such a great way to explain this and I definitely keep it in mind during tHe AP Music Theory Exam. Fantastic job!
Finally found the answer for a chord progression in songs. I’ve been wondering for years and RU-vid suggested this video ever so randomly. First time being thankful for a random RU-vid suggest that turned out to be pure gold. Thanks Karen for this video!
You know, I can't read music, I am pretty much self taught on guitar since I was about 15 years old, I'm 62 now, I have written down the words for songs over the years but trying to figure out chord progressions for proper use with my words has eluded me for all those years, 47 to be exact, I did cry as I played my guitar while she was asking her class what number is next, the simplicity of it all overwhelmed me, If someone could have explained this to me when I was 15, or even 10 years ago, what a treasure to learn, what a wonderful lady and teacher, I will endeavor to use this lesson learned with the years I have left. Thank You Mrs. Ramirez, you have given me a treasure that I have sought my entire life
I saw this when it was first uploaded. I'm a bit surprised it's still here. It changed my perception. I quickly moved on to Phrygian chords, which can go other ways. Very good for anyone to watch, at any level. I don't even care about this, now. But, that's because it helped me, majorly.
Woooow! Bravo!! I left this video with a clear understanding of the circle of 4ths and 5ths. Im a self taught musician and everything ive been learning on my own has now all made sense. Thank you, this was an amazing lesson.
It has taken me years of searching the internet with effort in vain.......You're a treasure i have found, you have just changed my piano life..........Love from Uganda,Africa
WOW!!! I've been playing music(guitar) for 5 decades. Only after watching this video and taking notes have I understood the principle of chord progression this well and easy. This is a great video. Thank you very much, Karen Ramirez. You"re a wonderful music teacher.
Watching this in 2021, Andrew Huang gave me a slight intro to music theory w his RU-vid video, didn’t understand it fully, but with this excellent teacher I now do! Thank you!!!
It's good way at first. but I hope you understand more clearly. 1. the fundamental chords are I, IV, V(1, 4, 5) and we can go to, a. 1 to 1, 1 to 4, 1 to 5 b. 4 to 1, 4 to 4, 4 to 5 c. 5 to 1, 5 to 4, 5 to 5 2. we can substitute 1, 4, 5 chords to other chords. a. Ⅰ is Tonic(T) => 3, 6 b. IV is Sub dominant(S) => 2 c. V is Dominant(D) => 3, 7 3. let's sum up. we can go to a. 1 to T(1, 3, 6), 1 to S(4, 2), 1 to D(5, 3, 7) b. 4 to T(1, 3, 6), 4 to S(4, 2), 4 to D(5, 3, 7) c. 5 to T(1, 3, 6), 5 to S(4, 2), 5 to D(5, 3, 7) if I choose 1-4-5-1 = T-S-D-T, we can change to, T(1, 3, 6) to S(2, 4) to D(3, 5, 7) to T(1, 3, 6) - 1453, 1456 - 1251, 1253, 1256 - 6451, 6453, 6456 and so on... this is basic of basic. you can use modal interchange and secondary dominant techniques.
Thank you. I thought i was going crazy when NONE of the songs i was playing followed these rules?? 🙈 I'm guessing this video is just a basic. . . This is a simple and effective way to arrange chords that are pleasing to the ear? Or does her method work most of the time? I'm still a bit confused. I play by ear and can play quite well. However this is me at the age of 34 JUST trying to learn some basic theory and my head is exploding. Any advice? 💙🏴
i swear i've been watching different videos for the past 2 years off and on trying to grasp this knowledge and this lady finally hit my brain in the correct manner for me to get the ball rolling. god bless this woman and her gift for teaching.
This one just blowed my mind. From many days I was looking for something to learn some music theory but this is much more than that for an intermediate. She's gifted. Very less people can make you understand such hard things in very less time and easily.

Karen thank you very much for posting this video..i will REPEAT what everyone said on the review..IN 10 MIN I UNDERSTOOD THE CIRCLE OF 4th AND 5th...INCREDIBLE🙊 Teachers should be taught how to teach...this lady is an example for kids and adults...I'm very honored Karen...thanks again🙋🏾♂️👍🏽🎶🇵🇷
Holy crap! She's AMAZING!!!! This is incredible! Why didn't I have a teacher like you back in High School?? Don't know but they should make more like you. Thank you Mrs Ramirez :)
Janet Polanco yeah she is an amazing couch but not for this youtuber. Cause he isnt owner this vlog. He reuploads someone's video. But not give any caption suppose this video has made by him..
what a great teacher thank you mammm you just explained something i have been trying to grasp for years . you are the best god bless your wisdom and ways of explaining music .Tommy uk
Hats off to this lady, just in Span of 10 mins she explained it in simple terms, something which I was struggling for last 6 years. Big thanks for being such a wonderful teacher. God bless you!
Thank you so much! I have been asking people how this ties together all my life and either nobody could tell me or I could not get them to understand what I was asking. This is incredible!
This is the perfect introduction to harmony. Obviously there are many many more possibilities but first you should master these rules. Especially for pop songs and hymnal music, this is a lifesaver! Thank you for posting this on youtube
Excellent lesson! I'm glad she mentioned about the patterns repeating until the bridge. This explains why I was confused when a piece would go completely off the predicted next chord. Thanks Mrs. Ramirez!!
Wow! I think I learned more form this lady in 9 minutes then I did the entire time I was in high school! I've picked up my guitar again this lesson has helped me in so many ways learn things I never knew. Ms. Ramirez, you made this lesson very clear and enjoyable to learn. Thank you for posting this! :)
Nice! I've never seen Karen before and she had me smiling and paying attention through this entire video. Loved the beautiful demo at the end to prove the logic works. Subscribed !!

I remember taking guitar lessons at a mall music shop and the guy just spent time making me memorize tab for a song...if he had taught me this it would have made me realize music isnt some secret magic for special people but there are ways to unlock all the mystery.
Teaching this lesson to people to learn a song is a DAMN TERRIBLE IDEA. I get why the notes make up a chord, ie C G F by always looking to the left the note and then the right. That is simple enough but adding 2 or 4 or 6 etc is a mess. The best way is to use the 1 3 5, or 1 4 5, method. The lesson on the minors is illogical, not LOGICAL. Teachers always go too fast and bore the hell out of the majority of the class, always responding to the big mouths who get the answers right thinking the class knows it. They do not and that defeats the purpose of the lesson.
I've ALWAYS played by ear. I stumbled across this video and played it twice (since I know NOTHING about music and POW... the mental light went ON! EXCELLENT. If I can understand it, anyone can. BRAVO Karen!
D Byrd Me to, how awesome was that, to actually see something your brain takes for granted actually given a visual & verbal explanation. I still don't even really understand it fully, but the fact what some of us do naturally has such a technical aspect to it is pretty darn cool to see its explainable (kinda) still gotta work out why we can play by ear lol.
Oh my God this explanation is the best ever!!! Absolutely awesome , thank you , thank you thank you very much. This is real nice simple and yet powerful.
I played all my chords naturally because my teacher drills the chord into me, so usually, I will play the chords required by heart. But the lady in the video explains it all as I never understood the theory of playing the organ when I was in school. I have a better idea with her reasoning, it is more understandable and logical to me now. I learned something new after all these years. Lol.

Mrs Ramirez you are simply Awesome! Your ability to simplify music theory is such a dynamic gift. Reminds me so much of my great college professor Dr D. Jack Moses formerly of Cheyney University of Pa. A style so missing in today’s Music Education. Thank you so much . May God always bless you
