In this video I test a pro boat and TFL propeller to see which has the best performance characteristics, Which ever propeller didn't make the cut we are going to detong balance and sharpen that propeller with a with a magnetic propeller balancer. Both of these propellers show similar characteristics And are non lifting propellers once we detong one of the 2 propellers it will basically make it a medium to high lift propellers
This is part one of a 2 or 3 part series, gonna work on this propeller, try to get The best performance from this particular propeller we're gonna detong like you're seen in this video, then we're going round off the tips of the blades make the propeller smaller in diameter and just see what kind of performance we can get from modifying any particular prop
I had request to balance a propeller From one of my subscribers So here you go, this is kind of my way of doing a propeller balancing video Most prop balancing videos are some what boring so I tried to include some test footage Before & After, hope you enjoy comment if you like these types of videos comment if you don't like this type of video. Thanks for watching IRONCLAD RC Tinker Test & Tune Everything.

Prop balancing is an art. I have done many to a perfect needle balance. I have the same balancer as you. I can get into advanced balancing with a timing light but you are not competing so that's overkill but I will share one secret I invented to get a perfect balance. You need to put the balancer on a perfectly flat leveled surface. Use a level. Next is to get the balancers shaft on one side to a needle point. Then you need to balance the rod. One that is balanced you can begin balancing props. One trick I do is use putty on the prop. Just a real tiny piece and you can move it around on the prop to tell you where the weight is either side of the blade. I invented this method as it's like a dynamic balancing instead of guessig where on the prop it's heaviest and material needs to be removed. Hope that makes sense and helps. 😊

NICE TipS thank you very much..100% Black art you can get lost on a prop quick.. I kinda see where you're getting at with the putty just recently watched a video similar to what you're talking about, With the putty. He was using tape instead? The whole timing light thing is new to me though that's a pretty ingenious. Thanks for watching

@@IRONCLADRC Ive used the tape method when I was working in a hobbystore.. but it was to slighly balance helicopter blades after a crash

@@IRONCLADRC There is one more advanced thing you can do but this is for the true serious racers. Once you have the prop balanced, you can now performance blue-print it by coloring the front of the prop completely with a sharpie and run it on the boat. The "loaded" areas on the prop when running will wipe off the sharpie whereas the "unloaded" areas will remain colored. With this you can remove more of the loaded areas to make the prop more efficient under load on that particular boat and setup.😊 Hope that helps.

Yes sir ive read and noticed after running a prop for long periods of time the prop will have discolorations on the loaded parts of the propeller. Man that's awesome I appreciate and I'm sure a lot of the guys watching my videos appreciate all the fantastic tips you've given thank you. I'm probably gonna try this out on my next video, thanks

Not really trying to bump my channel but just wanted to say your diy videos are very helpful! I've watched a ton of diy videos to build my current insanity project. This video helped a lot with making the 9mm prop I just made for the ridiculously small wooden boat I hand made. 💯🔥 IRONCLAD RC 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I have noticed once I detounge one they are slower. I think we need to re cup the trailing edge more and put more pitch in the prop once detounging. I am doing the same trials as you lately with props. great video.

Im able to use my RC plane prop balancer. Nice job brother. It looked like a factory racing prop when you were done! I just got a U19 a guy sold it new in the box. It has never been opened! Our weather is so damn cold 🥶 I haven't ran it yet. Nice job!

Hay Big B dig the channel most info i have gotten from all others combined built my first hydro in 1967 no rc freerunner any way my balancer like that gives a different reading if you rotate the shaft 180 degrees how much air gap do you run on the end of shift and magnet? Your right pushing the rod one side or the other helps If you look at the shaft. when you spin it it don't spin true every time got any cures thanks for the time and good luck Congrats on you and the miss on the soon to be boy take care Big B don't blink don't blink.

I like to run like a needle point on one side and on the other side round/dull point. Use the sharp side on the balancer magnet and the dull side run a gap. Play with the distance until you find where it's balancing at. Be patient.

Just tried yesterday a detounge on my best prop (even a bit smaller part), lost 2 mph top speed. I'm at the point of stop trying. Tried it to almost all my props (when for example running a bit to hot, slowest props, small damage, or when got squirly). Never got it to run faster though. I think it's to complicated. Still very qurious to see if you will find out what "the trick" is, so i will follow the uploads. Also think its nice you try to figure it out yourself instead of just buying a quick prop...

I'm on my 4th prop , 1 I'm still testing, 2 props I screwed up (trash) and the other I've gained 3mph with. Basically everything I thought I knew about props went out the window with the first 2 props. Lol. The more I read and learn with hands on testing the more Fascinated I become. Thanks for watching, good luck my friend

Try a thin flexible sanding disc on a dremel, its much quicker than filing by hand!

It still got a heavy side, have you taken any of the hub ? It when balancing any props. it should not lead into any position at all, even at if you got the blades to sit at that angle, prop should be able to stop at ANY position if it's completely balanced, this prop is heavy on the hub side (and if hub isnt balanced, you get false result on the blades aswell)

APC and other airplane props do this exact same thing. Once you learn how to 'read a hub' they balance perfect. Like you said they shouldnt drop at all.

Hey Big B. Longtime listener, first time caller here. Has anybody ever put two props on one shaft? Is that a totally stupid idea? I don't ever see it, so it's probably not a thing -but I figured you would know. Not talking about a coaxial shaft either. Everything spinning the same way. Probably dumb ain't it? Keep fighting the good fight!
@IRONCLADRC
@IRONCLADRC 2 года назад
Nope I've thought about it before lol. I've been told the the props have to counter spin one another like a Volvo penna lower unit on a 1 to 1 to have any real effect. If we put 2 on 1 shaft it kinds resembles a jet pump propeller which doesn't do well on a surface drive. Maybe we will try it in a future video. Haha on 2s or three 3s. Do it for s>it's N Giggles. 😆 I know it will load the esc and motor alot of blade area in the water

Did the boat feel smoother after balancing, less vibration? want to have a go at this balancing just to give bearings, prop shaft and electrics a easier time, not really bothered about picking up more speed
@IRONCLADRC

0.4% slower after removing same or more area from the paddle while contouring for more rpm versus more push (search feathering prop) , lift meaning there's less of the prop wetted and what do you get for messing? You've helped with some perspective on prop mod-ing on the cheap. You want to go faster? you're not going to like the answer, spray on some no stick on the hull or wipe a light misting of wd40, told you you wont like it.

It's a learning process you don't become a doctor After your first surgery It's a long painstaking learning experience everything u touch a propeller everyone's different an a each prop needs a different cut /cup/

Question for ya ! So i just bought a TFL Pursuit 3660 1620kv / 120amp Esc 4-7s prop is 42mm D / 1.4P 2 blade copper . When i ordered it i also got some parts to hopefully make it quicker after giving the stock electrics a good run ahaha ! So here's what i got for a setup coming Sea King 180a esc / SSS 3682 V-2 1660kv so now i need some props for this setup but have no idea where to start and props ain't cheap lol also what you think of this setup ? and what you think i could get for speed out this setup ? 2blade 3 blade prop . Thanks
@IRONCLADRC
@IRONCLADRC Год назад
Good setup as far as electronics, that lower kv motor should turn so big props. What is your goal speed, racing, ovals ? Should be able to turn an Octura x447 or m447 with no issue. M447 is a medium lift prop so your boat will run up out the water (dry) dryer than the x447 good all around props. If your looking for all out speed ABC is the ticket.
