This is a video on how we detoung, sharpen and balance our metal RC boat props to get more performance. Also includes test runs and speed clocks with one of these props on my BlackJack 26 with the stock power system.

Although detounging the prop is optional it makes a noticeable difference in performance, usually good for an extra 3 to 5mph. Detounging the prop gives you a little better pitch ratio as it removes the part of the prop with the least amount of pitch. It also takes some of the load off the motor allowing it to rev higher and faster. Also because of this you can usually run a slightly bigger prop. I went from the stock 40mm prop to a 42mm prop. All this equates to more performance

@spencermel long before the electric stuff caught on I was into fuel powered cars and boats big time! They were a lot of fun and pretty easy to tune and modify. I got away from fuel and got into electric when brushless power systems started to come out. Fuel is great if you like long run times and can find a place to run where the noise won't matter. Electrics these days are as fast but run quieter and cleaner with shorter run times though. Cost between fuel and batteries are about the same.

@roadstar499 leaving the tounge on the prop will give you a little more bit on the lower end of the throttle range but will limit top speed. Going up one size in prop diameter when detounging will make up for this and give you even more speed. If you saw my Black Jack 26 in the video, It was still running the stock power system and didn't seem to have a problem with cavitation.

@streetforcegp2 it's easy but can be time consuming. You just have to make sure when the blades stop spinning on the balancer they are both parallel to each other and level. Neither one should be rotating to the down position. You have to get it as close as possible during filling and sanding the prop blades. Then finish up balancing with some fine sanding emery cloth and water when in the polishing stage.

@dtmpowerboss the Octura x442 is a great all around prop for 36mm diameter motors between 1600kv to 2000 kv. You could also try the Octura x642 for a little more speed if your motor is rated over 1000watts of power. Its the same diameter only with more pitch.

I use a Great Planes finger tip prop balancing shaft i got from a local hobby shop. it works great on my magnetic balancer. I like that it is threaded and the two cone pieces are aluminum. If you can't get it locally search online.

chrissballer like you I'm always busy too. You know with videos, work, etc. It's not difficult to do but is very time consuming which is something I don't have a lot of. There are a few places you can have this done though. I know offshore electrics offers prop services on new props ordered from them. You can also find these services on the rc forums but you'll have to look for them. The other thing you could do is get one of the M series Octura props as they already have the tongue removed.

@dtmpowerboss "offshoreelectric" online store has a large selection of props. They also have carbon props which cost a lot less than the metal ones and don't need to be sharpened or balanced. Again look for one around 42mm in diameter.

I don't run three bladed props on my boats, so never really had to balance one. They put more load on the motor than a two bladed prop of the same size and are more difficult to balance as you just mentioned. If you are going to balance one, you can tell when it is close when the prop comes to a subtle stop and does not rotate back in the opposite direction.

Just as a sharp knife cuts through things much easier than a dull knife. A sharp prop will slice through water much better and efficiently with less drag and more speed. It's all about performance!

You can start off course with about 400grit then finish up with somthing fine like 800 grit or higher depending on the finish you want. You can also use a buffing wheel if you really want to polish it. I usually go with a satin finish, just peronal preference.

I don't own the other two boats but if I had to guess which of the three is faster I would say the the Mystic as it has a higher kv rated motor which means more rpm and more prop speed.

for the info Frank. I've sharpened my prop, but when I put it o a magnetic balancer and spin the prp, it stops at different pointson the prop. The osition that the prop rests at depends on its poition on the balancing shaft; I think that my balancing shaft is not acuall balanced itself. The sharp pont is not centered perhaps? Where can I get a better balancing shaft?

Thanks Frank, I found one online for only $4.50 - will order it. Could you please tell me why is copper-beryllium such a common material for RC boat props? Can you tell me the differences between aluminium, copper-beryllium and stainless steel props? Is one material better than the others? I read on one website selling props that their aluminium propsare not suitable for brushless motors - but I can't see why.

I wanted to know I have a 430 mm plastic prop and a 435 brass prop I want to cut it down and shape it to the small plastic prop Sizeto the plastic prop can I take the paper template over the small prop and in place on the brass prop and size it down
@DiehardRCaddicts
@DiehardRCaddicts 7 лет назад
Not sure never tried that before. After thinking about it I'm don't think the cut down prop would perform the same as the plastic one. You would be changing the geometry of the pitch on the brass prop at the outer edge which could cause it to lift more or less. Only way to find out would be to try it.

@DiehardRCaddicts

bestamerica Metal props are much stronger and will provide better performance because they do not flex or break like plastic props do. Plastic props are easier to use because they do not need to be polished or balanced. They are also a lot less expensive. I still prefer metal props over plastic especially for high power setups.

@WelLRoundeDSquarE
@WelLRoundeDSquarE 11 лет назад
I've been a machinist over 35 years, and a damn good one at that. I built my own sopercharger for RC nitro engines, and yet I would buy an Octura prop and spend the many hours needed to remove the tongue and sharpen and ballance it long before I would attempt to build my own. The geometry of a fuctional prop is the issue here, not building it. Let the folks that have done the research and have the facilities to investment cast them do that for you. Perhaps your parents can purchase online :/)
@DiehardRCaddicts
@DiehardRCaddicts 11 лет назад
You only really need to change a metal prop when it becomes damaged beyond repair or if you just want to experiment for better performance. Plastic props should be replace right away if they have any signs of damage.

Will detounging the prop help fixing torque roll?
@DiehardRCaddicts
@DiehardRCaddicts 8 лет назад
+Sick detounging the prop will not eliminate torque roll but might help just a little. Torque comes from the complete drive system, motor , prop shaft, and prop. Sometimes using a smaller prop helps, or offsetting the weight to one side of the boat to counter the torque roll. The only way I know to eliminate it completely is to run two motors setup with counter rotating props.
@sicklad3277
@sicklad3277 8 лет назад
RCFF-DiehardRC Interesting you say that because i have done a fair bit of research on torque roll and all people can really tell me is its a prop issue? I'm no boat expert but im pretty sure the bigger the prop the more aggressive it will grab the water?
@DiehardRCaddicts
@DiehardRCaddicts 8 лет назад
+Sick Lad yes a bigger prop will grab more water and create more torque roll. But remember each action has an equal and opposite reaction. Have you ever started up a brushless motor without it being mounted to something? even with no prop on it will torque over to the opposite side it is spinning. it's not just the prop but the total weight of the rotating mass along with the prop pushing against the water that creates the roll.
@modelnutty6503
@modelnutty6503 7 лет назад
a different type drive line, motor output shaft facing forward, with boat's drive shaft gear driven. they torque roll a lot less for motor and driveshaft spinning/loading opposite directions. they're also capable of swinging larger and/or steeper pitch props, changing gear ratio, this can really help to maximize speed and efficiency. example like an old Graupner Speed 500/600 system that connected a gearbox driving a U-joint steerable stern drive (they help a bunch too!). popped a 5000kv 3040 motor into old Graupner Cobra, it gets pretty happy on 2S.

Aluminum is more durable than plastic, copper-beryllium more durable than Aluminum and stainless steel is the most durable. Aluminum is not good with some brushless motors because it is too soft and may become deformed from too much power. Stainless steel is the hardest material of the three and the hardest to shape sand and polish. Copper-beryllium fall between the other two in all categories which is probably why it is so popular. I've always preferred copper-beryllium props.
