Detriment in Astrology: Origins and Meaning Explained

Discussing the origins of the concept of detriment in ancient Hellenistic and Medieval astrology, and explaining what it means when a planet is in a zodiac sign opposite one of its domiciles, with astrologers Benjamin Dykes and Chris Brennan.
Years ago I noted that that the origins of the concept of detriment are somewhat mysterious, because it is mentioned infrequently by the Hellenistic astrologers, and not usually defined along with the other classical "essential dignities" of domicile, exaltation, and fall.
Then suddenly in the work of Rhetorius of Egypt, the last major Hellenistic astrologer who lived around the 6th or 7th century, detriment is present as a full-blown concept and is treated together with the other essential dignities.
In my book Hellenistic Astrology: The Study of Fate and Fortune, I surmised that this meant that either A) detriment had developed as a new concept by the late Hellenistic tradition, or alternatively B) that Rhetorius was simply formalizing a concept that had been taken for granted by some earlier astrologers.
At the time that I published my book in 2017 I felt like I had found enough references to the concept in the earlier Hellenistic tradition to indicate that Rhetorius didn't invent the concept out of nowhere, but instead he was drawing on an earlier tradition.
My focus, then, became on establishing a set of English terms to refer to the concept, since the Greek term enantiōma that Rhetorius used just meant "opposition" or "contrariety". I ended up settling on the terms "adversity," "exile," and "antithesis." Some of this process was discussed in episode 44 of The Astrology Podcast:
theastrologypodcast.com/2015/09/08/conferences-detriment-legality-etc/
Then a couple of weeks ago I came across and article written earlier this year by Anthony of Seven Stars Astrology titled Detriment: A Questionable Distinction.
In this article Anthony, who is familiar with my earlier work on this issue due to taking my Hellenistic course and reading my book, did a survey of Hellenistic and early medieval references to detriment in order to show how infrequently the concept is mentioned, and to call into question the conclusion I made about its development in my book.
While some interesting points were made in this article, it was clear that some references to detriment in the earlier Hellenistic tradition were being overlooked or not recognized for what they were, or in some instances downplayed as possible interpolations.
This prompted me to go back and do my own survey of references to detriment in the Hellenistic tradition with Levente László of the Horoi Translation Project (www.patreon.com/horoiproject/), and we found a number of new references that had not been noted in any previous studies.
We are releasing the results of that survey today to coincide with the release of this podcast episode, as an additional handout to accompany the discussion:
References to the Concept of Detriment in Hellenistic Astrology:
theastrologypodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/detriment-in-hellenistic-astrology.pdf
These references leave no doubt that the concept of detriment originated in the earlier Hellenistic astrological tradition, going back to at least the 1st and 2nd centuries CE.
Anthony declined an invitation to join me on the podcast to discuss this topic.
When I spoke to Benjamin Dykes about it, he sent me a document he had been preparing for his upcoming course on medieval astrology where he did a survey of references to the concept in the early medieval tradition. Sign up for the newsletter on Ben's site to get a notification when the course is available:
bendykes.com
Ben classified the references into three groups in terms of how the medieval astrologers were conceptualizing detriment:
1. Inner division and contrariety
2. Corruption, disintegration
3. Foreign things, strangers, others
Ben agreed to join me on the show to discuss this issue, and to review some of the different references that we found, in order to get a better understanding of the origins and use of this concept in traditional astrology.

"The moon being opposed to it's own ruler makes fugitives, dishonored persons, wanderers, and those living aboard " Rhetorious Real life example ( I know this person ) Moon in Scorpio, Mars in Taurus. It's a night chart. Moons triplicity lord is Mars in mutual reception with Marses triplicity lord. Moon is in Scorpio ( note : Fall ) in the 2nd house in domicile of Mars. Mars is in Taurus in the 8th house opposing the Moon and in the sign of his detriment. The Moon is being opposed to its own ruler makes person who LIVES ABROAD for lots of years and not being able to return home . This can not be more accurate !

So my Moon is in detriment in Capricorn in the 9th house and Venus, who is my chart ruler (Taurus rising) is in detriment in Scorpio in the 7th house. (Fwiw, I also have a night chart). For Venus at least, it is conjunct Jupiter, mercury, my North node, and my descendant. For me, how I visualize this is that I've been in some fairly tense martian spaces and in environments that lend themselves to crisis but have at least tried to find beauty in the harshness of the battlefield so to speak. Learning how to do this in a healthy way for my well-being has been tricky but I'd says it's turned its self into a walking contradiction that still has challenges but unique or bold or unconventional solutions. The iconic imagery of a woman putting a flower in the barrel of a gun as a sign of peace, or perhaps a person in a support role in a time of war (such as a military nurse) comes to mind. The moon is a little harder for me to untangle but it feels apt. My parents, and I love them dearly we're not well equipped to handle my emotions as a child, and emotional response being shut down or punished. But in part because of their own rejection and dismissal of their lunar qualities because of generational family patterns. Though I think this has manifested more positively than it could have otherwise have perhaps. My parents and I are both learning to embrace lunar qualities in our life in my adulthood, and together (especially my Mom who has a lot of Capricorn in her chart). Then also part of integrating this configuration in a positive way, I've tried to take a grounded approach to higher learning, my approach with spirituality, and find new paths that work for me, even if I don't see them being common or used before. Part of the healing process I guess is to realize your own healing isn't going to look like anyone else's. Then again, Venus is blending with a bunch of other planets via conjunction, and my Moon is conjunct uranus, Neptune, and the midheaven, sextile and ahead of Saturn in zodiacal order, trine the ascendant, and sextile with the stellium in scorpio. I know this is long, but if it's helpful as an example I figured I'd flesh it out.

Oh haha, I missed a point that perhaps it's relevant that I'm a trans man, but a feminine one. I feel that embodies both placements in a way, it's walking in the world with contradictions that don't immediately make sense to most people, but it just. is. Idk,

Revisited this one having fun testing a method with spirits ruler being in detriment. I’d say some of the language with detriment can be softened in modern times while also saying it has value. I can express the detriment in terms of the mentioned complaint on using metaphors with detriment. Though, I do get the point of the complaint to a certain extent, I can say having spirit ruled by mars in detriment (libra) conjuct Venus that the metaphor is accurate. Natal mars can’t express itself and is in a sort of aggressive “bondage” with Venus that is felt constantly through internal tension. Reading the opinion by Kat wasn’t convincing in terms of not using it. In some cases, yes. I get the point. People vacation for enjoyment so it’s not always a great analogy. Romans were mainly Latin and native Americans were mostly decimated by the Spanish through disease who were many Europeans settled. Detriment is when a planet can’t express itself freely so I found it ironic. I finished cosmos and psyche where, if I became an astrologer and spoke at a conference, I doubt I’d be applauded for saying it was a long winded waste of time to read. I’d probably get escorted out before finishing why I thought that. 😆 Venus wouldn’t allow it anyways. She’ll let it come out every so often. Coincidentally I was watching the Carlin doc on hbo where he was openly bitter about the 60’s generation and why I didn’t care for cosmos was just because I’m carrying that bitterness at the time. And, we are a quarter past a Saturn-Pluto cycle where I’m disappointed by how that generation responded to covid. (It’s not the book, I just don’t want to hear it..lol) that’s how detriment is. I know mars in libra is obsessed with nuances ESPECIALLY with Pluto hanging around. Some detriments are soft, but maybe the vacation analogy is too soft. A manifesto on hating certain races probably isn’t pro-active. Slavery as a path to citizenship was common, agreements were broken towards certain groups of people. And a treaty was broken with the natives. How mormons ended up in Utah is quite brutal also. Being unwelcome in its home is a good analogy. Kat has a good point outside of the expression which is the assumption I’m taking which is a planet in a place where it’s felt it doesn’t belong which makes it contrary to its expression and nature. It’s actually the Venus, not mars, being slightly contrary. It responds to any mars expression with this sort of “turn that racket down” attitude when it sees it. Venus barely lets my mars extremes itself and mars gets all tensed up. lol. Mars wants to fact check every detail, Venus says let it go. Pluto is burning both with cigarettes. Historically, when we go through economic inequality people turn to identity politics to segregate and we’ve been collectively under horrible economic times. It’s part of my bitterness towards the 60’s revolution. Plus, I don’t have a prominent uranus so my natal Neptune feels slighted. lol. Spirit ruled by a detriment mars.. I may feel fortunate to have it conjunct a domicile Venus. May.. I’m enjoying these episodes and hopefully that mars detriment didn’t seep in causing an exile. 😆 Good episode, listened 3 times.

I am a Pisces rising with Jupiter in Virgo in the 7th whole sign house with an exact receiving square to the moon. When I was 24, I went through a divorce which left me without a place to live but my parents took me in. I think both the concept of a loss of autonomy as well as the concept of exile describe that situation really well. For a long time I looked for difficult transits concerning my 4th house and lord of 4th house for that year and couldn't find any. However, when I learned that detriment is more akin to exile, it made sense as I was literally driven out of my home.

Really interesting information. Thank you both for taking the time for this. I thought I might add this thought....We know that originally the 7th was the place of death or gave significations for death being the setting place as well as marriage. Perhaps this signification of conflict and adversity when in the sign opposite the domicile is the reason that in Persian astrology the 7th gained the signification of conflicts and controversy? Just a thought! I really tend to agree with Chris about how this knowledge was something that was simply understood and therefore perhaps the earlier astrologers found no need to explain it. It is obvious the delineation was there even though the reasoning was not necessarily specified. Again nice work!

This is a great discussion thank you! I was born with Mars copresent with Venus in Taurus in 12th.. so the ruler of 6th Scorpio is in detriment. I will have to look at this more but straight away I can say I have martyr tendencies.. I work very hard with very little or no assistance and go unrecognized, albeit used. Every so often I have a tantrum but then I just suck it up and do the hard work towards success, very determined, never give up. Also Jupiter ruler of 7th and 10th is in fall in 8th Capricorn and I have degree in small business management specializing in accounting. It feels like I have to work harder for what others get easily. Also things (big things) get in the way and taken away. I often have to let go of my wishes and carry on. I feel like a foreigner a lot !!! Don’t quite fit in. People like me, but I’m different 🤩

I listened to this episode more than a few times in a weird way in several increments. Fully, starting over, rewinding, etc. today it was related to another astrologer discussing placements in old hindu astrology where I became curious to then looking at several charts to see if things appeared in other ways. Mainly, I personally relate to this episode a lot by having a spirit ruler in detriment which is solving an astrology riddle. I did some loose research to see if it’s worth researching related to spirit ruler equaling mind which technically fits into the daimon philosophy. That’s harder to explain. Right out of the gate because it was a weird way I was pulled in, I found many big bodies in semi modern history having sect malefic spirit rulers. A big big baddy with detriment, I questioned if it was ethical and maybe putting it down because it looked very accurate. I think found a current big baddy with a nice Jupiter ruler which actually fits the way that individuals mind works. Loyal and generous to who are loyal, all about expansion along with Jupiter things in that sign. I started to look at actual mars in libra which I had to stop for time, I want to make sure charts are accurate also. Roman Polanski may be accurate, especially if Venus is in fall. JK Rowling may possibly be accurate especially if Venus is also in fall. I wouldn’t be shocked if Rowling is because my reaction to her being exiled was “technically, she’s right.” Could have explained it better, but there’s been an over correction that’s causing unintended problems. I’m considered ethics, I actually listened to an episode on sexual orientation signatures which was by accident, my mind was on ethics related to spirit ruler. Prior to death, Jung wrote a book for the public to clear up misunderstandings with his models and one was anima/animus. They don’t actually exist as anima/animus, but mixed with different archetypes. One case included in the book was a patient who was having homo-erotic dreams where the patient and analyst were prepared him to call off his wedding and come out to his family only to find that this animus archetype was actually a symbol for his cold feet to get married. This baffled the analysts initially, but it’s common. It’s common both ways. Heterosexual men can have an animus, it may even mix with other archetypes. It’s just a rule of thumb to explain what an archetype is where it also needs understood Jung is criticized for having a mistress who was actually a mistress for Emma also. Letters suggest Emma was very in love with Spielrein. Everyone is flawed, Jung had many. But so do others, it should have been clear in the 60’s that anima/animus were not biologically sex related nor related to anything physical as archetypes are not. We sometimes inject our own desired interpretations which brings in my pondering on ethics since any astrological placement needs to be considered individually. Take my own sexual astrology interpretations, I’ve seen a lot on mars/Venus conjunctions plus Pluto. High sex drive? I don’t know, I wouldn’t know any different. I do know having Saturn rule the 5th and ascendant ruled by 12th with 12th in 12th I’m preferential to celibacy or, at least, abstaining even if active. Regardless, that 12th chooses physical detachment so that triple conjunction is irrelevant. It may not always be that way, I just have other concerns where I don’t care. It’s complicated/complex. At the same time, considering ethics: is there any way to stop potential ethical issues like others labeling a spirit ruled by a malefic evil? No. That resolved my issue. 😜 Eminems chart read by spirit ruler is actually fascinating. It’s like if Rowling has mars in detriment as ruler (eminem doesn’t, but it’s involved), she doesn’t care about being exiled. Just “we’ll, right is right so the consequences don’t matter..” Anyhow, great episode. I could lay out my Uranus theory but this is too long already.

This made me think of moon nodes more often than planets etc. i had to break from reading cosmos and psyche due to weather patterns causing sinus headaches, but what I thought was interesting was I was able to guess Tarnas was a mars in libra reading the first few chapters having that natal. Harvard must be slang for prison or something… 😁 What was it? I’ve noticed I have a very specific libra like attitude towards anything mars stands for which is very much an early focus (could easy be more, I’m not deep into it) right out of the gate up to awareness of the world around an individual. I think it was said in another cast that detriments aren’t exactly as bad as they make them out to be which I agree, it was said here also. It’s just challenging. I have a hard time how others express their mars without often considering others like that’s normal… which it is. The positive of mars in libra sometimes is being condescending like being very verbal about how invading iraq was a bad idea then being able to sarcastically say “what did we learn, kids. You can’t invade a nation, murder their leader, and expect to still have friends”. My libra issue is snobby sarcasm sometimes. 😉 That’s more the negative side. Friends were into the Diablo 2 remake and view a detrimental placement as a soul stone shoved in your skull or something trying to contain it. I really didn’t think so much hate for mars in libra existed until that last mars transit through libra. Over dramatic in my opinion. Sometimes you have to take others or other into consideration.. pffff.. I’m not even going to attach a song with libra mars because I’ve done that before and it’s really unpleasant. That’s offensive sarcasm territory.

What about accidental placement.. Venus is in derteremint in Aries .. but at the same time Aries is the seventh house as a derivative house from Libra ..so Venus is in the seventh house of its own home, with a Libra Vibration even when it is in Aries ..so is the opposition - antithesis concept softened here because Venus in Libra is dealing by nature with otherness ..and thus in Aries it is even more engaged with that concept of engaging with otherness even when engaging with self ?
