You hit the nail on the head, that bonehead decision to go for it instead of taking the point changed the whole momentum of the game @chickengenius4202
very true but I think it is very unlikely, just like Pete Carol never did for his horrible decision to pass the ball on the goal line in the Super Bowl, he never regretted it, lost the trust of his players ..never recovered after that ...coaches have to take accountability for their horrible calls
I've lived through such horrible Lion's seasons where the game was already over in the first 20 minutes of play. I'm just glad that we have a team that will be fun to watch on Sunday's for at least the next few years. Thanks Lions and fellow fans who made this such a great season. I could barely go anywhere this year with any Lion's apparel on without someone wanting to strike up a conversation about the team or yell GO LIONS from 25 feet away. Went to 4 games this year (the most for me in a long time) and high-fived lots of strangers. Tough to lose this one like we did, but what a great season overall.
@@coryvallad7578 Oh I agree (if I am understanding you correctly). This was gonna sting either way if we lost, but the way we lost, it stung a lot more.

For all of you couch coaches- SHUT UP - without Dan and Brad we would have never got this far! I have followed the team since 68 and this is the best team in my lifetime. We will get back here next year - One Pride!!!!
He is a FANTASTIC coach and he has done more for this franchise than any other coach. He reminds me a lot of Sean McDermott of the Bills (I'm a lifelong Bills fan). He has changed the culture and instilled a winning attitude. But he has made some absolutely HORRIFIC sideline decisions (like McDermott) that has cost his team dearly. When they were penalized on the 2 pt play against Dallas and he still went for it from the 7... that was a terrible braindead decision. Twice tonight he didn't take fgs when fgs would've won the game. The first one would've put them up three scores, 27-10. The second one would've tied the game. I'm sorry, he's a great coach, but he blew it today.
Dumbest coach in the history of the playoffs. His job isn't to get you to the NFC Championship. It's to get you to the Super Bowl. Not to do the same dumb things he survived doing in the regular season in spite of himself. Those decisions cost his team a SB appearance. And a rigid mind is a stupid mind.
I agree with you on Brad. We have the GM and the QB. Now we need the coach. Tonight proves Campbell is not the coach we need. You know who wouldn't have coached us out of this game tonight?................Bill Belichick. Jussayin
Ask Falcons fans about the good years after blowing it because of the coaches play calling. The players have all offseason to hear how the coach screwed up and next season in-house fighting could do the same to Lions as the Falcons.
Lmao as a lions fan we say this bs every year and every year it's the same heart break ..... had the game wrapped as we always fucking do and boom a come back happens ..... look at past Dallas lions games in WC for example .....
The Marine Corps taught me what coach Campbell teaches his players... TOUGHNESS, DISCIPLINE, TEAMWORK among other factors. As for the Lions, nothing to be ashamed of... nothing but pushing forward and learning from your mistakes. They gave their hearts out on that field! Hats off to the Niners and their fans. We are all still Lion proud! Thank you coach Campbell for an awesome season. From a Vietnam Era Marine Corps veteran.
@@kimcage7768 No they didn't... I taught myself that! The Lions players didn't lose that game! They played their hearts out. So, who else can we say but the coaching decision. He second guessed himself on a few of those plays, so he has to live with that. IMO. Thanks for your comment. From a Vietnam Era Marine Corps veteran.
That was as gut-wrenching a loss as I’ve ever suffered in my 30 years as a Detroit sports fan. But it doesn’t make me any less proud of this team nor does it dim the brightness of their future. We fans always wanna pin a loss on one singular play or person, whether it’s MCDC and the coaching staff, Goff, the defense, etc. But the bottom line is they lost this game as a collective unit. A couple missed throws by Goff, numerous drops, a million missed tackles, some questionable decisions by Dan, the near-pick by Vildor that went off his face mask and turned into a 50 yard gain, the Gibbs fumble…the list goes on. They didn’t deserve to win in the end. San Fran made all the big plays down the stretch and that’s why they’re heading to the Super Bowl and our season is over. But the Lions will learn from this as an organization. Players will come back hungrier, Campbell will continue to grow as a coach, and Brad will make the necessary upgrades at the positions of need. These guys are just scratching the surface and I fully expect we’ll be back next year in a better position to win it all. To Coach Campbell and all his assistants, Brad Holmes, Chris Spielman, Sheila Hamp and every single man who donned a Lions jersey this year: thank you for one hell of a season. #OnePride 🦁💙
@@smartmaxwell9017 yeah ok bud. This was year 3 of a rebuild. Virtually every corner stone of the team is under the age of 25. Goff at 29 is still considered pretty young for a QB especially considering he doesn’t rely on athleticism whatsoever. Losing BJ and Glenn may be tough but this organization has built a winning culture and will likely bring in guys who fill those positions without too much being lost. Overall your take is incredibly lazy and lacks any real analysis other than bs tropes regarding the history of the franchise (which has clearly been on an upward trend since Sheila took over for her incompetent parents). Have a good one.
Love the take. Go Lions - a heartbreaker, but yeah as our ship rises together so it falls. Even after such a wonderful season, sports fans always wanna have their reactionary takes and have a way to explain everything. It’s never so simple. I appreciate the thought out response, and believe it’ll be up from here.
Thanks for the great season guys, looking forward to next year hoping I get those season tickets. Being a Lions fan my whole life I never had a year like this, so I've never experienced such a crushing moment as this one, but still just an amazing year.
But why gamble late in 3rd quarter when you can be up by 3 scores? And then do it again knowing you could have traded touchdowns for field goals and bleed out the clock that late in the game...
This is the kind of coach I played for in the late 70's. Loves his player's till the end. The LIONS are the best they have ever been with him. A true leader of men. If it was easy, everyone would do it. Go Coach Campbell and go LIONS
Completely agree. Mid third quarter, could’ve stalled niners momentum, would’ve gone back up 3 scores. Dan’s cute go for it mentality isn’t right in all situations.
Nah, the last one was the worst one. Soon as I seen them not get it I could feel the loss. Had they just got the FG, it woudve been a tie game. Wouldn’t have mattered if SF even scored cause then DT gets it back w enough time for a shootout and overtime
I believe we can be better next year. This was tough as hell, but this is a young team with a lot of talent. Let's see what Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell cook up this off season.
As a bears fan i was rootimg for you guys all the way. And its not as easy as you think to get back there next yr. We are still suffering from bad coaching decisions. Take the points and make it harder on san fran. Now i have to live with damn mat naggy playing in the super bowl after he messed my bears up. Damn damn damn
Playoff points are hard to come by. To risk 3 points is a bad decision. Period. The case can be made from Dan, I can hear that…But the Lions had to live with the bad side of risking going for it. To me, it’s inconsiderate on behalf of your team since every yard is so much more difficult in the playoffs. Bad coaching call from an otherwise great coach. Dan even mentioned how hard it is to get to this game. All the more reason why going for it over taking the points is such a blunder.
He should regret those decisions because they cost his team the game and a chance at the Superbowl. Kicking a field goal when you're down by three is something that a 10 year old would think was a good idea. What an absolute fool.
That’s just not true. They were 17/22 on 4th with 3 or less. 2/2 in the post season. They both were catchable balls. The players just failed to connect.
He coached the game the same we He coached the entire season. If they would have converted on the 4th downs everyone would be saying how brilliant He was for going for it on 4th down. As a Packers fan, I can say one thing, the NFC North will be one of the toughest divisions in football next year.

You should regret not taking points. You gave them the momentum. It wasn't in hindsight. EVERYONE who knows anything about football was asking WTF and there you go with your EGO.
Actually Badgley was 18 of 21 from 40-49 yds since 2021. I didn't remember him kicking for my Colts in 2021, but we're a dome team too so I'm sure a lot of those were inside. Still though? 27-10 and they keep all momentum and it's not like Purdy won't panic and throw it up for grabs now and then. GB dropped 2 right in the middle of their chest. First was a pick-6.
Dan Campbell saying he just felt really good about them converting it's just freaking ridiculous. I hope he's just saying it for the cameras and really deep down inside realizes he made a huge mistake. When you're trying to get to the Super Bowl and you're less than a quarter and a half away from going to the Super Bowl, you kicked the field goal and squash all the momentum and all the confidence and all the hopes of the 49ers. You have to look at the situation, at that time the momentum was still in the Lions favored because they just stopped the 49ers from scoring a touchdown and made him kick a field goal which I guarantee that Kurt the confidence of the 49ers cuz at that point in time they probably thought there was nothing they can do to get back into the game because the lions were just dominating. Then when they saw the Lions about the score field goal they probably were really losing confidence realizing they were going to go back down three possessions again but this time half of the third quarter was already gone so they would have started pressing the sense of urgency would have started coming up they probably would have made a mistake by the time they came back down the field and scored again I guarantee the third quarter would have been nearly over by that time Dan needs to really check himself cuz he gambled when he didn't need to. I understand taking risks and gambling but don't do it when you don't have to especially in a game like this when you're Super Bowl hopes are on the line

The game was very winnable. Man that was one of the best calls he made. They were up 14 and he made the right call by kicking the FG. He messed up by going for the first fourth down play I would’ve punted tbh or maybe took a long FG. However that receiver (I forget his name ima packer fan 🤷🏾♂️) should’ve caught that pass and he didn’t. He’s a gambling coach and it caught up with him it’s that easy.

I am certainly not saying we would have won if we had, we just did so much wrong in the 3rd quarter on both sides of the ball.
To be fair, the ball thrown to Reynolds was catchable on the first 4th down attempt. The play call worked, but us not executing on the basics (like catching that ball) was the tale of the entire 3rd quarter.

The decision to run the ball on third down and goal with a minute to go and waste a timeout also was a game killer. If they score with 55 seconds left and three timeouts, they could kick deep and get the ball back and tie the game. Taking that timeout pretty much ended the game. This is also on top of the terrible 4th down decisions
Nah that wouldn’t have helped. 55 seconds still isn’t enough cause once they kneel and burn it down, it’s hardly enough time to take back a kick off. Problem was not taking the FG to tie the game

It sounds weird to say, but as good as they looked in the first half, it made me nervous a Lions fan. We aren't typically a team that goes out and just destroys teams offensively right out of the gate. Of course, I'm not suggesting we don't try to score as much as possible, but when you have a large lead, some teams play differently. Yep. Late in the 3rd quarter, you're up by 17 if you kick it and you can trade touchdowns for field goals the rest of the game and win. It just doesn't make sense not to take the points that late in the game with a big lead.

I've been hearing things about "he's been doing it all season and it's what got him here" ... but the difference between a good coach and a great coach is knowing when to take your foot off the gas. This was driven by pure ego, he didn't respect the 49ers at all, because it didn't just happen once.. it happened TWICE. You don't do that in a fucking title game. You take the free points and you don't just drain your whole squad of momentum making them feeling like they're behind.
The win against Green Bay gave them INCREDIBLE momentum going into this season. This loss? They will have very little momentum going into next season. Losses like this put hexes on teams.
Dan Campbell needs to spend ALL offseason playing Madden. For those that don’t know, Madden is basically a flight simulator for football game management. There’s a reason most good HC’s today are 40 y/o or younger. We’re the first generation to grow up playing Madden. Give me a 17 pt lead at the half and I’m letting my sister play defense while I make a snack.

I can honestly say his family regrets it, his team, his bosses and paycheck signers, the fans of his city, etc… And THAT is the harsh reality of being a leader. Respect to DC for standing by his decisions. I think it his heart of hearts, he knows the first FG should have absolutely been taken. It’s was a near gimme, and makes it a three possession game. I KNOW he will contemplate how they could have better managed themselves on the BAL 2 with a minute left. That I know. DC is a huge reason for why everyone listed earlier even had the opportunity of looking forward to this game and this spot. The wins are always the toughest games to lose. That’s the truth. To Dan Campbell, I’d point out that hindsight’s 20/20. I’d let this particular hindsight sink in quite a bit this offseason if I were him. When the football gods are telling you it’s not a good time to get cute, you heed.
What I don't understand is he can call for a field goal to end the half when the ball was at the one yard line. But the 2nd half then you get aggressive when the game and the momentum was shifting.

We all make mistakes, but if you keep making the same one and saying "I don't regret it", you are a clown. Someone needs to be speaking about how Dan Campbell took no accountability for those 2 absurd 4th down calls. Throughout his post game presser, it was all "WE" didn't execute, "WE" didn't make plays. Those 4th downs were 10 point swings in 49er favor. Had a chance to go up 3 scores, they don't get it, 49ers go down and make it a 1 score game. Later, lions down 24-27, chance to tie with a medium range fg, they don't get it, 49ers go down and score. You kick the fg to go 3 scores, it changes everything, more pressure on a struggling Brock. You tie the game late, pressure is back on 49ers to respond, they probably do, but at least you have a CHANCE. Dan Campbell's "we" shit and having "no regrets" is absolutely SHAMEFUL.
Yep. Dude doesn’t take accountability. “We couldn’t convert, things like that happen, it’s a tough league…” Jesus Christ the guy says the same thing every time his decisions cost his PLAYERS and his FANS a win.
