Lived in GPW twice, from '85-'92 and '07-'13. One clarification regarding parks: each of the Pointes has its own park and a park pass from one does not get you into the others. Also, GPW has a great lake front park that is actually in StClair Shores (which undoubtedly galls SCS residents). It is on property adjacent to the Edsel Ford estate. It has quite a few boat slips, a huge swimming pool with waterslides, a diving well, tennis courts, picnic pavilions and a perimeter walking trail that is a a bit over a mile in length. It is actually a very nice facility. I would recommend GPW highly, especially if you are looking for a good place to raise kids.
The land that the park sits on was originally part of the Edsel Ford Estate. In 1946 Eleanor Ford sold the 42 acre lakefront parcel to the City of Grosse Point Woods for $60,000.
Hmm. I believe it, but there seems to be more drama and complexities than necessary with the public parks in the Pointe's. I'm sure the residents will say "not really" but... yeah... kind of. lol. Just kind of backs up my point on having a lower score on the recreational opportunities in the Pointe's on the CLS if you ask me. I mean if it's all the same school district throughout the Pointe's... if everyone is paying the same taxes towards the same school district that serves all separate 5 Grosse Pointe communities... why can't one live in Grosse Pointe Woods or Grosse Pointe Farms and have access to Patterson Park in Grosse Pointe Park? Or Neff Park in Grosse Pointe? ... and don't say that it's on me to do better research and know that before going into a video because that's just a different level of petty. Lol. Maybe it is on me to an extent and I'm not upset about it, I'll own not knowing that and doing a better job of fact checking that before saying "being a resident of Grosse Pointe Woods allows you access to a park in any of the other Grosse Pointe's" as that was an incorrect assumption... but... you have to admit... the fact that you can't access a park in a Grosse Pointe that you're not a resident of is a whole different level of petty lol. You have to admit that.
@@ChrisHarden Unified school districts in the Detroit area are fairly common. There was a GP school in Harper Woods until recently, and Warren schools in Troy. However, pretty much *every* city in metro Detroit has it's own residents-only pool/park. I know it seems weird, but the Pointes are completely separate cities. They all have their own police and fire departments and city halls. The only thing they share are the schools and libraries (the Shores, Park and City don't have libraries.) Anyways, I liked the video. I grew up a block away from the spot at 3:47, and I buy wine from Meijer all the time :) That Woods Fine Wine place is legit, though.
Fun video! I grew up in Grosse Point Woods (and St. Clair Shores) and went to University Liggett. Quick correction : Max Gail taught at Liggett, but did not attend. One notable alumna you didn't mention -Gilda Radner .
Having beloved family members who moved to G P Park some years ago these videos are very interesting to me. G P woods actually looks nicer an more affluent than G P Park. My family member is actually a pretty important person among all the Grosse Points, happens to be very liberal, (me not so much). Thier income is good enough that I believe they bought far less than they could have if they wanted to. They mostly buy carefully picked used cars, love wine but buy inexpensive stuff they like. I was amazed last year they actually bought a new car! A honda civic ha ha. Chris this series has been great an I thank you for the insight.
stratcar4450;THANK you!! Though I grew up ONE block north of Dearborn in Detroit,I'm pretty familiar with the Pointes, and agree with your assertion that GP Woods looks markedly better than GP Park!! 😐 Keep making the facts known!! 😶
I'm an Amazon DEPENDENT,ever since gross medical negligence on the part of Detroit Receiving HospitalAIMED me and left me prohibited from driving a motor vehicle!! 😐
As a Birmingham resident, I absolutely appreciate GPW. Affordable housing, low risk of flooding, not densely populated, strategically located in a good spot, awesome neighbors, great schools and services, overall nice place to raise a family. Once I'm done with the city/big urban lifestyle. I'll make a move to this subarub. Edit - Wife agrees GPW for the W. Haha
Yeah I was surprised I thought that the home prices would've been higher. They're definitely not the prices that you see in Birmingham. @heyjohna property taxes are really high in Birmingham too... where OP is from, with higher home values in Birmingham as well. Property taxes are high throughout all of Michigan honestly.
I'm from Rochester and Birmingham. We live in Tucson now but we are thinking of having two homes and being snowbirds. We are thinking GP maybe. We miss Michigan.
I'm not an Amazon snob ,but rather a DEPENDENT after being irreparably MAIMED by the gross medical ineptitude of Detroit Receiving Hospital leaving me visually incapaciated and prohibited from operating a motor vehicle. 😡
20:28 it’d be nice if you did Chicago or St. Paul suburbs next. Im considering moving to one of those 2 cities next but living across the state in Grand Rapids currently.
I'm filming for a series on Chicago here and there currently. Will film the suburbs there as time goes on. It'll take a while to go everywhere and do everything but I do what I can at the pace that I can.
Depending on your budget there are really nice burbs outside of Chicago, mostly north or west of the city. The south burbs are either pretty rough, or too far and inconvenient if you commute into the city for work.
Now comes the critiques. No Zora Arkus-Duntov, creator of the Corvette? GPN Norsemen is essentially a Viking. GPW has some other homes, that have been owned by families, who may or may not have "Family" connections.
