With the Detroit Pistons playing their last game at The Palace, we look back at when the Detroit Shock lit up The Palace with their first championship.
I was at this game. The energy was INSANE. I don't think any other wnba game could compare. This was just like being at the Pistons championship game the next year.
Mannn, I remember this and it makes me miss the Shock even more, especially Nolan and Ford! I totally forgot that Pam McGee (Imani and Javale's mom) was an assistant back then.
Yes, both the Pistons and Detroit Shock won their first professional sports championship against Los Angeles teams. The Pistons clinched their title at the Forum in Inglewood, Ca however.
JELKK The Minnesota Lynx won three WNBA championships in the last 6 years. It would've been four championships, but they lost the deciding game of last years WNBA finals to the Los Angeles Sparks by a single point.
JELKK Tell that to Pistons owner Tom Gores. He'd rather invest in bringing an MLS franchise to Detroit than reviving a pretty successful WNBA team on the court. The timing of the Great Recession, its economic devastation in Metro Detroit, and the transfer of ownership from the deceased Bill Davidson to Karen sealed the team's fate. :-(
Debuting in 1998, the Shock were one of the league's first expansion franchises. They were also the first WNBA expansion franchise to win a WNBA Championship. The team was the sister team of the Detroit Pistons and from 2002 to the 2009 season was coached by Pistons legend Bill Laimbeer. They won championships in 2003, 2006, 2008. Unfortunately on On October 20, 2009, it was announced that the Shock would be moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma to play in the new downtown arena, the BOK Center due to lack of attendance. The Shock roster and history was retained along with the Shock name, but the team colors were changed to black, red, and gold. The franchise is currently known as Dallas Wings.
One thing I think will draw more fans if yall show old highlights. This was the most fun I've ever had watching a WNBA game. One of the greatest games I've ever watched. Show the highlights and then end with this. Great video tho
This game broke my heart (#GoSparks), but it was a sight to see this crowd on TV supporting the Shock. Who would ever think that a few years later, the owner would abandon the franchise.
Bill Davidson passed away before the franchise was sold. His widow Karen inherited control and sold the Detroit Shock to a consortium of people that brought the team to Tulsa, Oklahoma after the 2009 season. At the time, the Detroit area continued to suffer from the Great Recession like many other places in the country.
dvbrstst I miss the Shock being in the Detroit area. The league doesn't carry the same devotion from me unlike when the team was there. If only Tom Gores is interested in reviving WNBA basketball in Michigan. The Pistons are back in Detroit, and the Shock should join them (buy the Dallas Wings or fight for an expansion team).
No WNBA team posted a profit until 2010. Money is the only reason. Teams like the Detroit Shock, Houston Comets, and Sacramento Monarchs were successful but lost money.
I want the Shock to return to Detroit. There are many obstacles though. Whether the team can be profitable, who would own them, the market and consumer demand, etc. The broader American sports culture must be changed to increase demand and profitability for women's sports.
Back when I cared about the WNBA. It used to come on ABC back then and during the summer I'd watch the games and root for the shock. (live in the Detroit area) When the shock moved I stopped caring about the wnba. The games stopped coming on ABC and had no way to watch. Plus I had nothing to root for.
Anton Riley I also miss the Detroit Shock, and we as fans of the former WNBA team ought to band together and sway Pistons owner Tom Gores to revive the WNBA team.
BrownBrother27 yeah but I'd doubt he'd do that. The Wnba is a dying, if not already dead league. It makes no money and it actually takes money from the nba. The product ain't good no more
Anton Riley About half of the WNBA teams make a profit last time I checked. That being said, the Pistons lost millions of dollars; including any profit sharing per the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. It was also the timing of horrible events: the Great Recession and death of former Pistons owner Bill Davidson.
Thank you WNBA for uploading this clip! I still miss the DETROIT Shock. :-( If only Tom Gores put his passion to bring an MLS franchise to bringing back a WNBA team for the Motor City; upload videos of the 2003 and 2006 WNBA Finals to honor the former Shock, Palace of Auburn Hills and Joe Louis Arena. Bring back my Detroit Shock!!
@@isislaz I know about the Dallas Wings. I detest the owner who bought the Shock, moved them to Tulsa and relocated to Arlington. It's like the resentment from Seattle Supersonics fans towards Clay Bennett. Many Sonics faithful don't root for the Thunder, and I do likewise for the Wings.
