Hey Curlfriends! I hope this videos brings some clarification as to what could be causing all of these hair issues. To be clear, I personally have not experienced any hair issues using DevaCurl products ... BUT that could be because I really rarely used them in 2019. I try to use new products every week to review for my channel so I couldn’t exclusively use DevaCurl products if I wanted to. I also have A LOT of DevaCurl products... so much so that if I did use them it was probably an older product that may not have gone through this possible change. My gut says that half of my products are harmless but trying to figure out which ones might be good... makes me nervous 🤔😬. I’m going to take a break until everything is REALLY confirmed. In the meantime... I have a BUNCH of different products to use!! Please reference my Curly Hair video playlist for products that I use and recommend. Thank you for valuing my opinion. I will continue to educate myself on ingredients so that I can confidently recommend products to you THAT WORK! ❤️
Thank you, Bianca for your hard work and dedication. I appreciate the information you share with us and I've come to trust your thoughts and opinions. So far, I have learned to love and care for my coils. And I look forward to you teaching us more.
Bianca, You say DevaCurl has transitioned ownership some three times. I only suspect DevaCurl's present home of production is CHINA. If not disregard my tirad. You may want to educate yourself on our recent industry scandals hitting the pharmaceutical community with officially authorized High Blood Pressure generic medications produced in CHINA containing "unlisted" cancer causing additives. Or the Baby Formula milk scare about 3-5 yrs. ago now, I am just causually recalling these incidents. Baby Formula product made in CHINA was showing up on the shelves having unlisted plastic additives that cause infants and toddlers kidney failure and death in China. This incident is called the China/Chinese Milk Scare. Then there is the Pet Food produced in CHINA that came to shelves in America, people trustingly bought made in CHINA name brand Dog and Cat treats and watched their beloved doggie and kittie die after unwittingly feeding them contaminated food with lethal levels of plastic additives that were never listed on the side of the product packages. Read books like "Dead Pets Don't Lie", "Dead Dogs Don't Lie". Now I am getting political,... CHINA cares about China, not the USA. CHINA has had a China first policy all of its Communist life, the USA is only new to that game with our own America first policy and looking out for the health of our citizens is said to be somehow implicitly wrong, even racist. You can tell from my tone that is not my view, to me its strictly a quality control issue, framed by human rights undertones. It took some hard pursuading of myself but I am a zealous advocate of MADE IN USA products now. I ask you only to consider.
Thank you so much for this video really gave me a lot of insight and so excited to see you included onw of my theories. Your opinion will continue to matter in my life because you're the reason I have gone natural and been natural for years and tried out so many things you recommended this does not change anything for me girl I'm sticking by you until the wheels fall off lol #Rider now please go get some rest lol
Thank you for this video! Have you seen brad Mondos response video? Probably one of the most hurtful things I’ve ever seen. Basically blaming women’s aging for their hair falling out. You should check it out.
@@anabelloves1D Cantu and Shea Moisture are by far the best AND affordable curly hair products in my opinion. I feel like both companies are very safe.
Shea Moisture sold out to a bigger company and their products changed too. 😞 I used it religiously for two years and noticed early last year that the ingredients & products changed, and reached out to them about it, but refused to answer any questions. Fast forward to now - I got a haircut last week and all the hair that we chopped was dry & felt so damaged. 😭😭😭😭 I am absolutely devastated and so angry! I just went shopping & bought $70 worth of new products to replace them. Save your money!!!
Hi Ayesha Assalamu alaikum. Greetings from Pretoria, South Africa. I am so sorry for your pain. I cannot begin to imagine how bad it must be for you my sister. I subscribed to your channel some time back and saw what you have been through.
I honestly hope and pray that you can recover from this.... emotionally as well as physically.... you've put more time and effort into your hair than anyone I've ever followed.... I really hope you find something that works for you and that you don't have to resort to a big chop 💔
I am a chemist. It was written in the freaking bottle. Years ago when Deva's products became a thing in Brazil, I was called out by the curl fanatics because I said that Devacurl products had relaxing ingredients. Now I am right. PS: If I am not wrong, imidazolidinyl urea (Renee talked about it) and DMDM Hindantoin were the ingredients. These are present in a lot of natural brands as well, some are being suggested by people as Deva's alternatives. There was also a carbamate derivative that is either a formaldehyde releaser or herbicide (too lazy to search).
My daughter has 4c hair and often wears it in an afro. A few years ago, we were in a mall and approached by a woman that claimed she was a hair dresser. She recommended Deva products for my daughter's hair because she said it would relax the curl and look "so pretty". I declined any info because the last thing I wanted to do was relax my daughter's hair and I was actually offended that she thought her hair needed to be relaxed to be pretty.
sebapony7 I hate it when people do that 🙄 why would you say that in front of a little girl, what was she supposed to think of herself after hearing that?..🤦🏾♀️ people need to think about what they’re saying..
I started seeing a new hairstylist recently and the very first time she did my hair she used DevaCurl. That was also the last time because the next time I went to see her she had switched out everything. Granted I was confused and she explained the whole controversy to me and said, “I’m not risking ruining my clients’ hair.” LOVE MY HAIRDRESSER. Watching this video also made me realize how glad I am that I was never able to afford DevaCurl lol.
The saddest thing about this scandal is that Devacurl probably weren't the ones that made the decision to switch to cheaper ingredients... they were bought over by a goliath company that probably forced them to increase their profits. And now it backfired...the shit is litterally hitting the fan...the brand's name is completely ruined.... no one will want to buy Devacurl after this... and the company that bought them over isn't even losing sleep over it ..... if they need to sell Devacurl and cut thier losses... then that's exactly what they can afford to do.... Devacurl however will never be able to bounce back after this 💔
It's 2022 and my curls haven't bounced back. My curls are limp and wonky, flat and frizzy, I lost hair density because ai was shedding like crazy, and my scalp was itchy and broke out in pimples and scabbed. My child suffered similar effects. I won't shed a tear if the company never bounces back.
i used to resent the fact that in australia we couldn’t get access to devacurl products but little did i know it was a blessing in disguise. so devastating to hear about the relaxing effects and to see all the girls whose hair has been damaged 😭💔 stay strong girlies
Same here from the UK. We could get them but they were shipped from the US, hard to get hold of and also therefore it doubled the price. I’m so glad I gave up on them now
Have you seen Ayesha?! Devacurl almost completely straightened out her hair and she says now it gets frizzy and gross after about 9 hours. And she gets clumps of hair every time she runs her hands through it!
@@freddiemercury4880 this is a dad thing like diets. The dry shampoo and the CG method are fads. Also you need to brush your hair daily or yes your hair will fall out in clumps period. I honestly feel like ALL CG did was overcomplicate getting beautiful frizz free curls.

@@tlwest21 I can’t tell what you’re saying. You should never brush curly hair while dry. And normal hair doesn’t fall out in clumps when you run your hands through it? Where are you getting your information? Especially since in your profile picture you have straight hair...
@@tlwest21 wtf do you mean you should brush your hair every day?!?!? Absolutely not!!! Do you even have curly hair, or is it straight like in your picture because if so, I don’t wanna hear a damn thing from you about how to take care of curls.
The thing is though, that it was only after the company was sold and the owner was changed that people’s hair started changing. The new company probably made them buy cheaper ingredients for a bigger profit. So all of this drama might not even completely be devacurl’s fault. While I obviously am not supporting devacurl right now, I definitely need to know if it was because of the new owners and workers.
Same. Never again. All I can do is try to be gentle with the hair I have left, hydrate my curls with good clean products and do scalp treatments. When I was young I would have my hair thinned and relaxed. So... I thought Diva Curl was a lifesaver when I started my curly girl journey years ago. Sigh... A few months ago I went to my stylist for a scalp treatment, deep conditioning and trim... she showed me the handful of hair that came out into the wash tub... 😭 I am more committed to my hair now than ever.
I almost cried when I saw HiFelicia's after photos. Oh my gosh! I used to watch her vids religiously because her hair always turned out amazing when she styled. I feel so bad for everyone affected. I really hope their hair can get back on track.
Bianca is like your cool really nice aunt that makes you feel better when you’re having a bad day or makes you laugh. She gives you very valuable advice and encourages you to be yourself. Your mom gets mad at her because every time aunt Bianca sees you, she takes you shopping and you get your nails done. She never tells you her problems but will listen to any of your own struggles. She looks out for you and stands up for you. All your friends tell you “ Man, I wish Bianca was my aunt”. Lol😂❤️
Bianca, **LIGHTBULB MOMENT** If the ingredient that you mentioned (UREA) can act like a “relaxer” in high heat, I doubt that the product being stored in high heat is the cause. I think it has more to do with the diffusers and hair dryers that women use in the styling process, and using the product in Summer. I only used the Super Stretch and within three weeks, lost my hair elasticity, to the tune of it appearing heat damaged on the ends. The problem is that Deva promotes their DevaFuser and heat styling, in addition to air drying via plopping. The ingredient composition should take into account HOW people will actually use products and other natural exposure. For example, most skincare and body care products let you know when to avoid sun exposure while using the product. Check out the back of some EUCERIN bottles at the drugstore. They advise year round sun protection and sunscreen when using most of their products. Why? Their lotions/cream are intended for rough and dry skin (E.g. keratosis pilaris). What ingredient do they use for this? UREA. The same ingredient derivative that you mentioned. If you were in the sun, at the beach or diffusing/heat drying with DevaCurl products, that out your hair at risk for heat and UV damage. Whoa. Thanks for doing the research to help put the puzzle together for us.
That’s a good point and could be true for some people. However, Ayesha Malik is in Alaska and has said she only diffuses on cool. Also, DevaCurl is still responsible for making a product that cannot handle diffusing or summer months.
Wow. Based on the stories I was feeling it had to be some relaxer type ingredient. Similar damage was reported by people who went to salons that would sneak relaxers into shampoo and conditioner to make natural hair more "manageable". This is really sad.
Minimal Assembly it all sounds good but there is one problem - D.Urea has been in their formula for many years and the majority of folks reporting issues say the problems began in 2019 which is also when DC removed this ingredient from most of their products. I just don’t think D. Urea, a widely used preservative is the culprit.
Omg I'm still using DevaCurl my mom noticed these changes in my hair and i just started noticing it myself so i thought maybe I'm doing something wrong and decided to look for a devacurl styling video and came upon this!! WTH!! I'm going to stop using this immediately!!
I really respect the lack of unnecessary drama. Theories and no blaming - after all, DevaCurl is also losing a lot in this scandal and I'm sure they didn't want any of this. Really good video.
I went to college with felicia!! Shes such a sweet girl and everytime I would go in class, I would fall in love with the MOUNTAIN of hair that she has!!!
Girlfriend, that looks like they straight up are putting relaxer in their products. Boy I’m glad I saw this because I was just about to become a Devagurl.
There is no speculation that my hair became dry and brittle and there was so much hair loss that I had to do the big chop of my curls. I even went to my dr to see if there may have been health problems causing the issues and there were none. Since stopping the use of devacurl my curl pattern is back and my hair is getting its thickness back.
i am happy this has happened for you and i wish i could say the same. i have the similar issue except i stoped using deva curl months ago and my hair still falls out like crazy and i’m practically bald. i try so many different at home remedies to stop the hair loss but my hair is never getting thicker. it’s so devastating to look at myself like this all because i used a hair product that was supposed to be safe. the hair loss and thinning has not stopped and idk what else to do.
@@baileygonsalves7707 see a dermatologist, the hair loss could be due to stress, diet as well has seborrheic dermatitis all of which is treatable. Some times the products mess with the environment of our scalp and thus aggravate seborrheic dermatitis which require prescription treatment which once treated hair growth will improve. Check it out. Hope that helps
I started using Devacurl in May 2019 after getting a Deva cut, by September I lost about 50% of my hair. I was losing hair by the handfuls on every wash day, on my pillow and if I simply raked my hand through my hair, I was literally balding!!! I kept blaming my hair loss on stress and a new birth control pill, however a friend sent me a video from another popular influencer talking about the damages devacurl caused her hair. I stopped using the products immediately, after about a week I stopped shedding, and the hairloss in the shower was very minimal. By October my hair was sooooo thin I had to do a big chop. The existing hair is now growing beautifully but I haven't noticed any new follicular growth from the hair that was lost, so my hair is still extremely thin. I'm currently doing hot oil treatments with essential oils, deep conditioning, staying away from chemicals and heat and hoping for a miracle.
And im lucky that i am broke and didn't get diva curls i feel bad for you but in my opinion i think cantu will be good fir you you can buy on amazon so don't worry just keep taking care of your curls like me i ak broke and might be getting cantu cause all my shampoos at home have sulfate and other bad chemicals i live with ma mom and she relaxed my hair a lot but ever since I've been using bar soaps and taking care of my hair for now until I get cantu its been great ive also been using hair masks that are rlly nice and ky curls have been nice
Is your hair still thin? If it is you should consider getting a derma roller for your scalp, I can't guarantee it'll regrow your hair but if your hair isn't regrowing it could be a chemical burn and derma rollers help reduce scar tissue with prolonged use.
@@sandy_carpetsthesecond5013 yes it's still thin, the existing hair is still growing but no new follicular growth, I'll be seeing a dermatologist soon about some new treatments, but I'll definitely try the derma roller, thanks.
My god. I thought was me going crazy. I used devacurl for 2 years nothing more. I even had to go back to black hair again due to all the damage my hair suffered from this products. I hate devacurl just like that. My curls became straight, dry, scalp dryness. Girls do not purchase this products
Thanks for this video reviewing and talking about DevaCurl products. I bought the whole curly hair product line (big splurge)because my hair stylist recommended them. Now 2 years later may hair has been falling out and I didn't know why so I chucked it up to aging. I started wondering about the DevaCurl products and then I found your video exposing what's happening to other curly hair women. Your video has definitely brought clarity to my hair issues. Now I want to moisturize, nourish, strengthen and grow my hair after several big chops. Thanks for your reviews on Shea Moisture products which are much more in my price range.
Yeah- my hair has fallen out. The hairline is growing back but the center is not. In fact there’s parts of my scalp that still feels like it’s on fire. This is April 21st. I stopped using the products in January.
Stopped using them for a few years because i thought it was something else doing it. Went back to it and CRIED. My scalp is healing and ive chopped a few times. But wow the mistakes ive made. Ive learned so much.
Girl I thought this video was gonna be at least an hour based on your IG question lol! Thanks for your “research” before making the video. Also that green looks really good on you!💚
Shea Moisture sold out to a bigger company and their products changed too. 😞 Now their products have a higher alcohol content, less of the ingredients that are used to moisturize, and are causing people's hair to dry out! I used it religiously for the last two years and noticed in early 2019 that the ingredients & products changed; I reached out to them about it & they refused to answer any questions. Fast forward to now - I got a haircut last week and all the hair that we chopped was dry & felt so damaged. 😭😭😭😭 I am absolutely devastated and so angry! The theory that that one ingredient transforms into a mild relaxer in heat is very interesting and makes so much sense. Obviously it’s only one ingredient so it wouldn’t be super potent, but over time would damage your curl pattern and would totally cause hair loss. Putting a mild “relaxer” on your hair multiple times a week...I mean dang.
When I first heard of devacurl I was so excited! I used it for a month straight before my dad made me use horse shampoo on my hair for 8 months (so many sulfates oh my god my hair was ruined. He also thought that coconut oil was forming a fungus in my head, may hair went through so much) I then got reconnected with devacurl and used the delight line. I noticed that my hair didn’t feel hydrated, my curls weren’t defined, and my hair was so frizzy. My hair looked like I straightened it 10 times in one day. It even made my scalp super flakey. About a month later the devacurl controversy appeared. I no longer use that brand, I use Shea moisture and my hair is looking great🙂
I *ONLY* used the DevaCurl SuperCream, and my hair began thinning and falling out more. I also noticed the ends were becoming a lighter shade of brown, and my hair is super dark. I paid no mind to it since I dove deep into the Curly Girl life in the middle of October 2019 and figured it was a normal part of transitioning (I never used heat, so I'm not sure if "transitioning" still applies to me, but whatever). As for the color change, I blamed it on Mofajang's red hair paint wax. My friend who dyes her hair said red has always been the trickiest of dyes, and I used the red wax right after I got into haircare. A lot of people said I was crazy, that my ends were not lighter, it was just the lighting of the room. After seeing Ayesha's video it really made me angry to find out DevaCurl is the reason why I see big bald spots when my hair is wet, and why it takes me longer to get to a certain level of volume that was easy before. More and more people are also noticing that my ends are lighter as well, and I'm not as crazy as I thought. I'm still quite depressed that my hair is no longer the same, but it'll be okay. I've switched many of my products to natural brands like Shea Moisture, discontinued all DevaCurl use in my household, and I've stocked up on videos like this one with real information :) Thank you for being an educated curly hair influencer. I really appreciate your effort, especially since our curl patterns are almost identical.
your hair being a lighter shade of brown at the ends is really common because the sun lightens your hair it makes sense for your ends to be lighter than your roots. my hair is brunette but as it gets more sun exposure it gets little specks of blond and Ginger
@@monsutades9999 good thing to know it's normal :) personally I only noticed it after using curly hair products, but it was probably there beforehand and I just wasn't paying attention
@@debrathezebra no problem -a lot of people don't notice it I'm an esthetician and I went to school with a bunch of cosmetologists so I learned a few tricks of the trade ;) my partner's also a cosmetologist
Be very careful with Shea Moisture products also. They are also being boycotted by former customers for hair damage and other things. Look up RU-vid videos or Google it. They sold their company to Unilever and they changed the ingredients. Products didn't work as they did initially.
The formula had changed with the first and second buyouts of the company. Each time cheaper and more harmful ingredients were added. That's why Lorraine Massey (the original co-founder of Deva Curl) left the company years ago. She didn't want any part of the adulteration of the products that was underway. People had these hair damage issues as early as 2017, myself included that year. They just didn't come to the surface until recently when people started speaking up on social media platforms.
I guess I need to be really informed and make sure I know when a company buys out another company, particularly one that I like and use so that I can be aware to be on the lookout for any changes to my hair or body. 😨 yikes!
Now that you bring up the relaxer thing, I’ve realized that every time I go to the Devachan salon my curls always come out looser in the after results. I know they tell you to come to the salon without product in your hair, so obviously their would be a significant difference, but my curls never look that loose when I do my hair by myself...and I do sections in my hair like they do.
Lala O SAMEE!!!! My hair never is as defined. It comes out with minimal volume and a lot of frizz. I always just chucked it up to “first day hair” and they did too! But my curls don’t last long with their products tbh. For me it just doesn’t have enough hold in general. So every time I go, I still just restyle my hair at home with my products after my hair appt. No ones first day curls looks as good as it does on day 3 but my hair still looks pretty defined the first day with my own products, even if it’s flat. So...that’s something there.
@@josefinamendez4046 This is pricy but Bounce Curl has been working well for me. The Moisture Balance Leave In Conditioner has become a new favorite for me.
I think it's never late considering the damage it has done and that DevaCurl is coming to European Sephoras, so any input is good! welcome back, beautiful :)
This is literally absolutely INSANE. So i’ve been very upset lately because my hair has literally been over time becoming straight in the back of my head. So, I have been using Diva for over a year there original line and decadence. This makes so much sense because i’ve never had this happen to me before using the line. I didn’t suspect anything though because that is the first curly hair product that I had used that was actually good. Thanks for this information, very well said!!
i’ve come to believe devacurl damaged my scalp. i’ve lost hair and been diagnosed with seborhic dermatitis (dandruff). no matter how many treatments from the dermatologist i use, NOTHING helps I’ve got rashes on my scalp and the dermatologist doesn’t know how to help. edit: i used no poo often, but clarified bi-weekly. I used wave maker and super cream. I used both deep conditioners. I swore by the ultra defining gel.
maddie voorhis this sounds like my EXACT experience! Same products used and same issues. I stopped using deva curl at the end of 2018, chopped 5 inches off, but I just cannot get my scalp back to normal yet. 😢
Have you been prescribed Nizoral 2%? This works really well for me. It is a medicated shampoo, but you have to follow "the rules". Suds it up, let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, then wash further with the same suds and rinse clear. You *have to* use this twice a week until the issue is clear! I have had SD since I was a baby (almost 48 now) and I know this inside out. Nizoral was the only thing that ever worked for me. But ask your dermatologist!
Try rinsing with vodka.several life hack videos say this helps. Get organic extra virgin olive oil, heat slowly until slightly above normal body temp.pour onto hair.cover with shower cap.let sit for a good hour.wash completely.take a room temp beer, pour onto hair.let sit 20 minutes, rinse.may help. I asked a few drag queen friends, they said this works for them.thought to share, but always check with a pro
@@rochellethundercloud346 I have tried all sorts of things like this, and what I've learned is that it's all so very complex and convoluted. The *absolute easiest* is medicated shampoo. Just follow up with 2x conditioner or a double masking and you should be good to go, just don't let the conditioner or the mask touch the scalp (ears down).
I'm the type of person that only uses one brand on her hair for years The 'worse' that happens is less defined curls, which I don't mind It should never be anything more than that

I was growing out my hair for my wedding. I was trying to love my natural hair. I’ve been using DevaCurl for maybe 6months to a year. I woke up one morning and the front of my hair fell out over night. My hair line has receded by about an inch. It’s really dry and breaking off. What’s left in the front is really thin. I cried. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I don’t want to shave my hair because I wanted beautiful long hair for my wedding but it looks awful. I’m now hiding the front on my head with a big cloth headband.
Thank you. I am lucky and have friends that have bought me all sorts of hair vitamins to try because they know how much I was loving my natural hair and how upset I am. I am hoping it works but I’m so scared there’s permanent damage 😭.
Try to check dr Bronner's soap (bery few harsh chemicals) to wash your hair (they explain how on their website) and check black seed oil. Maybe it can help.
I had the same issue with Wen and for me personally I just think that exclusively cowashing is not a good idea, but that's just my opinion based in my experience.
J Shaw That’s how I feel. People need to have their true-blue clarifying shampoo on deck. I love conditioned curls as much as anyone else but we need the reset button.
I haven't used shampoo or cowashes in about 6months, I literally just use silicone free conditioner and really massage my scalp. My hair actually changed from tight waves to literal ringlets.
When you said “headaches”....I was literally shook. During my pregnancy I had the WORST possible headaches. It was soooo bad...esp at the end and all I was using was Deva Curl. & since I stopped , there hasn’t been any. Could be bc I had the baby in oct , could not. Either way super scary. & no longer using the product. Thank you for this.
I just started my curly hair journey last year it has been 15 months since I straightened my hair. When I start I went to the store and bought the entire Deva Cirl line. I used it for about a month and my scalp started to be irritated. I stopped using it because I thought since I have always used a regular shampoo and conditioner my hair just wasn't having it. So I am still trying to figure out my hair. I have a high position and I am older 46 and this truly a difficult journey because my hair looks a mess. You have made it easier for me. However, I still don't have the application of products right. My hair is half curly and half chemical and heat damaged hair. Thanks for the video.
lorna wright I would recommend all natural products that have protein in them! One of the more affordable options is the mielle rosemary and mint collection! It’s strengthening and moisturising. If you want more higher end products how about you try The Mane Choice! I’ve tried both when my hair was breaking and weak and it helps! Also oils like avocado, flaxseed, manoi, coconut and grape seed are good for weak heat as they help bind to proteins in your hair.
Legit you’re amazing, I too suffered from deva curl and honestly that was one of the last things I expected to be the issue with why my curl pattern completely changed. I dyed my hair for the first time, this time last year at a salon who also uses deva curl products, I loved the way my hair looked and felt right after, I immediately went out and bought the same products. Two months later I’m in tears because I cannot understand what happened or how this happened, I follow all your tips, legit have a whole curly notebook of what products and ingredients work for my hair and which don’t. And when I tell you I was clueless and felt EXACTLY how you described in the last few minutes of the video. An idea I had to help my hair just chill and give it a break was box braids for a month. Helped with growth and honestly my curl pattern slowly is coming back, but hopefully this idea helps someone out there who’s super scared to just chop it all off again 💔🥴 lol but Bianca you are legit the GOAT lol please help us recover sis
I used the no poo last year 2019 for like a month and I noticed I was getting headaches while I was using the no poo and after and so I decided to stop using it bcuz I figured I was allergic to the product. And hearing you mention that now that some subscribers complained about that it's crazy bcuz I thought it was just me. And I'm glad I listened to my scalp and stop using the product. I also started using their hair milk 2 months ago but I have not notice anything different with my hair 🤷♀️
It’s the RECEIPTS for me!!!! I’m a victim of this case and have been lovingggg watching your recent videos while transitioning. Influencers are doing this WITH us, not to or against us. Even if they weren’t personally hurt by these products, they’re helping highlight so many stories and you know what... I can’t help but stan!!
I've been a curly girl for 5 years but this past year my hair started thinning underneath and it was see thur. It was breaking off and shortening. It began to look awful. I had no idea what was happening and yes I was a Deva curl product user. When I saw Hifelisha video I was shocked. I was experiencing the same thing. I couldn't believe it. I switched products and tried to fix my hair but it was ruined. I know that this goes against all curly hair girl rules but I went back to straight hair. I am not relaxing it but I do flat iron it. It's the only way I could get my hair to look normal. I hope this issue is resolved soon.
This makes SO much sense now... I used the Deva Curl B’Leave In ONLY, for years, and my curls just eventually deflated completely. To the point that I stopped even trying to wear my curls and I had gone back to just straightening it, assuming maybe my curls had just deflated as I’ve aged. Now, I’ve always had wavy/curly probably 2b/2c curls, but they started to just look stringy. Because I had used the product for years, I never really thought that was the problem. I tried using a few other products before I gave up completely, but bc my hair is so fine and thin, they all weighed my hair down so bad I just thought it was a lost cause. I did experience a LOT of hair loss during the time I was using DC though; I just thought it was down to other things happening in my life at that time.
Truthfully, I was researching the product over the summer and read some horrible reviews. Being that my hair has thinned a lot as I've aged due to graves disease, I decided to skip using the products out of fear my hair would fall out. I'm thankful I did. I appreciate your honesty with your video(s).
I just started transitioning my hair from straight to curly this year and I been using Dava Curl all the time, I use the no poo and the conditioner at least three times a week for this past 3 months. Haven’t used any heat and my hair is still damaged, I know it would take a while but it’s worse. I was actually going to give up and straighten my hair again. I’m glad you made your video because I only follow you and I trust your opinion. I’m going to give it another 3 months try without Deva Curl and see what happens.
FDA also doesn’t check natural supplements also. A lot of females now purchase European products because Europe has way more restrictions on health and beauty products that the US has. If the FDA would regulate our beauty products it would be better.
I’ve always had thick curl even through bleaches, relaxers, and straightening back in high school. I stopped all that in college. I can’t believe, now 28, that I lost 30% of hair using DEVACURL for two months. I stopped using it January. My hair feels so thin that I can feel breezes in my scalp, and left with a rubbery feel when wet. My scalp was so itchy, dandruff or build was so bad. Detangling was a nightmare because as much as I tried it would tangle backup. Wash days were the worst days. My solution: I went to get an olaplex salon treatment and 2 inch cut. This help with the build up. I got olaplex 3 and been using it bi-weekly to get my curl pattern back. I’ve been switching NYM charol shampoo & Shea moisture repair. For deep conditioning, I’ve used Shea moisture charol and repair Results: I just have thin curl hair now with not much volume as before. Still seeing hair loss, but curl pattern has returned. Can you please so a video on essential oils for hair loss?
Hi Vivi G. I've been on my natural hair journey for 15 years. I've done the research on essential oils that promote hair growth. There are many, but the ones that are backed up by research in medical journals that have been the most effective are Rosemary, Peppermint, and Lavender. I recommend getting them from Plant Therapy, which is an excellent company with top quality oils at affordable prices. The GCMS tests for purity and quality can be found right on their website for each oil that they sell. So you can check it yourself by batch number once you receive your products. Many EO companies don't do that because they know their oils are watered down with additives and the GCMS test will expose that fact. Google them and buy straight from their website. Remember that EOs are concentrated oils and powerful so they must be diluted in carrier oils. So you only need to use a few drops. Plant Therapy's website can educate you on dilution percentage and more. You can also add them to shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. My friends, family, and I have used the 3 EOs above with great results. My hair grew so quick that I had to trim it often. I hope your hair goes back to it's previous thickness and health using these EOs. Wishing you all the best on your hair journey. 😀 EO = Essential Oil
I noticed that my hair didn't agree with the ultra defining gel, or heaven in hair, or any of the cleansers...but I only used these products occasionally because I always found I had better results with other products. I've noticed some dryness at the ends of my hair but no permanent damage or excessive shredding or thinning thank god!! Needless to say I am no longer using any of these products anymore.
I used the wavy line; low-poo delight, one condition delight, and the frizz free foam. My hair was wavy, long, and thick (2B-C, med. to coarse, high density, waist length, medium porosity). The products caused excessive shedding, itchy flaky scalp, and my hair became ‘frizzy straight’. I started using the sample size foil packets July 2019 and my hair was fine. I had some of my best hair days. Bought full size products in October 2019; by the end of December, my scalp was on fire/itching so bad that I washed my scalp with soap since I didn’t have any other shampoo in the house. I spent two months trying to revive my hair but I ended up cutting it to collar bone length last week. My ends would not wave up and it looked like I had heat damage even though I have not used heat in over two years. My hair looks a lot better since the cut but I’m still having some scalp issues. I lost 12inches and half of my density in just 2 months. TL;DR Devacurl delight line caused excessive shedding, scalp issues, and straightened my ends. Had to cut 12in. off for hair to look wavy again.
I started out on my curly hair journey with Devacurl and my hair absolutely hated it. I really wanted it to work, but it just didn't. After trying a lot of products I've found that my hair prefers products with natural ingredients. So I now use the Think Dirty app to check all of my hair products before purchasing. It's unfortunate that we have to go to these lengths to protect our hair.
Hey Bianca! I'm on of the people that suffered from hair and scalp damage because of DevaCurl. The batch of No Poo and One Condition I ordered in October is what really messed my hair up. Before that, DevaCurl made my hair look the best it ever had. I had hair loss, loss of curl definition, tangled hair and an itchy, flaky scalp. My scalp was so itchy, I though I might have contracted lice from one of the children I work with. One I stopped using DevaCurl back in January, I noticed a huge improvement. I started using Rizos Curls, Shea Moisture, and Innersense products and right away the itchiness and flakes stopped. I am no longer losing a lot of hair, either. I used to clarify once every 2 weeks with a clarifying shampoo with 2 types of sulfates so I know that I was taking care of my hair well. I hate that some people out there are dismissing our issues and trying to place the blame on us. I used nothing but DevaCurl products for almost a year and now my curls are no longer the same.
Marc Possoff the big problem is people that don’t do their research and think that influencers make the products🤷🏽♀️ how hard can it be to apply a styling product? All of them have different styling methods and what it works for her maybe doesn’t work for me
Sarah Moses influencers only recommend the product. They don’t know how to use them. There is a certain way to use products like Deva Curl. And most people don’t know how to wash their hair the correct way.
Mirfrancis Villa the most important aspect of curly hair products is properly washing or cleansing your hair. I guarantee most of you ha e build up from not properly washing or cleaning. Build up causes hair loss.
Marc Possoff so sorry that you are so ignorant and base your opinion on what you think, is 2020 there are products for before and after, products for every type of curl and porosity... very hard to “not clarify” the proper way... are people that they don’t even use shampoo from other lines and they don’t have an issue
Oh Lord have mercy.... Thanks for this Bianca, nice to meet you last year when you were in Jersey (during my bachelorette weekend).... However, it’s sad to say my curls have been highly affected by DevaCurl.... I stopped using their product because I have experiences the following, hair loss, natural hair color change, migraines, my curls were healthier while I was blonde before DC, and now they’re completely different. Trying my best to find solutions.... Thanks for this. Gby and your family. Best wishes on your Maternity Leave
Hi! I just recently found your channel and I'm so glad I did. Amazingly, I started out looking for a way to refresh my curls after my first "curly cut". I've never relaxed my hair but this is the first time I've truly decided to take the time to invest in my curls and let them fly free from the bun I usually keep them bound in. Thank you so much for this video! In the 2 weeks that I've been browsing, you have provided me with so much information on how to manage my mane!
Love you!! I’ve been watching you for years and so glad you took the time to be a new mommy and focus on your new family instead of giving into the pressure to just release the video. You always give your very educated opinions and I truly appreciate it!! 💗
OMG you have saved me!! I've been dealing MAJOR ISSUES with my curls now I'd say at least a year. I started using Deva curl in March 2019 when i got my 1st deva cut. Well for the last 6 month, no matter what i do i can not get my BIG BEAUTIFUL CURLS BACK!🤨😪 Thats how i came across your channel. I was searching for ways to fix my curls, ways to get my hair back. Its so bad, i have to keep my hair in a bun because of all my frizzy breakage poping up everywhere. And im know for ny big sexy hair, well not any more! Now i know why. Its make since, ive been still using the deva curl products thinking it was me not this high end, everyone love, product!! But now i hope and pray i can get my BIG SEXY CURLS BACK! Thank you, you are awesome 😘🥰😍
Thank you so much. It’s actually a blessing in disguise that you needed to take some time before posting this, I think, because it’s so helpful to revisit the issue after the viral blowup. This isn’t over and I hope those who had more severe damage can join you on your own growth journey :) I didn’t have severe hair loss or scalp issues but I chose to stop using Deva anyway. And when I did, my migraines, which had started coming every two weeks or so, absolutely dissipated. Now, I’ve always gotten migraines, and they’re definitely hormonal. When they increased in frequency, I blamed it on having started grad school - certainly a contributing factor. But either way I’m now much happier with my cheaper routine, knowing I’m not taking any risks and rededicating to more active and intentional hair care. I’d love a sort of “dupe” list in the future when you find the time. I’m still seeking the conditioning step, but for stylers I am loving the combo of bounce Curl’s clumping cream with LA Looks extreme sport gel. Happy curling, and thank you Bianca for all you do!
I have suffered hair loss, curl pattern change, color change and my scalp is always inflamed. I used the shampoo and conditioner from July 2019- January 2020. I purchased exclusively from Sephora. My hair has not recovered. In fact there are patches where no growth has happened. My scalp still randomly burns. I consider myself lucky because I don’t have migraines. I’ve been reluctant to share my photos because of how embarrassed I am of these bald patches. The “relaxer” / heat theory is what’s made the most sense to me based on what I’ve seen my hair go through and the pain I still experience. These conversations help me feel less alone. I appreciate the recovery tips you shared. Honestly- i can accept a lot of this as vanity issues which I’m working on but I just really want the scalp burning feeling to stop.
I knew nothing about the craziness with Deva Curl, & I just started using some of the products about a week and a half ago. I’ve noticed that my scalp hurts most days after washing my hair. I thought I was losing my mind. Looks like I’ll be throwing everything out.
So sad that there are so many problems and controversies with curly hair products. I’m thinking of Wen, Shea Moisture, Eco styler and Deva Curl. We already don’t have much and brands keep fucking it up so we have even less...
Thank you for posting this, Bianca. I noticed a difference in my hair in using the DC Melt into Moisture, Heaven in Hair, Deep Sea Repair, Ultra Defining Gel and Arc Angel. My hair used to be very thick, however, I experienced a lot of loss in back like HiF3licia. I did not use the DC shampoos. My hair would become matted as soon as I wet my hair in the shower. I finally had to cut out the damage. I can already see a difference after I stopped using Deva Curl. We all know our own hair better than anyone else. With that said, I have been through menopause and I am certain that the damage that I have experienced is not from that. I'm grateful that my experience was not as bad as other people (it did not affect my scalp). My heart goes out to those that are still dealing with the damage caused by using Deva Curl.
When I saw the posts and videos I realized I wasn’t crazy, my hair started thinning up a lot!!! My curl pattern is a little more loose than before, and also i have super itchy scalp! This is very frustrating... it took me long time to transition my hair.
I stopped using Devacurl in January and my curl pattern is still not great. Went from 3b to a 3a and it still isn't back to normal. It is a long recovery, but i wish you luck and health...
C C thanks so much, i hope you get your recovery too, i stopped using deva since the end of January too. I bought some hair products in Dominican Republic last time I traveled. They are called afro love, it has helped with the hair fall, but not with the itching and dry scalp.
I am one of the many Deva Curl victims. My scalp started getting itchy and then developed red irritated patches. My hair then began to fall out and get frizzy and patchy in terms of the curl pattern. I saw a number of influencers start to talk about Deva Curl and I immediately stopped using all their products. I've been using a variety of products over the last couple of months to try and help (all brands you've recommended) and am deep conditioning weekly. I'm happy to say it's working! My scalp is almost completely healed, my hair is looking healthy again, my bare spots are starting to fill in and my curls are back. I'm happy that I'm on the other side of this issue but so disappointed in Deva Curl for their lack of response or care for their customers. Congrats on your new little guy! Welcome back and I look forward to see you back here on RU-vid again
