Me learning to drive at 17. Dad says; get far enough ahead of the vehicle you want to get in front of so you can see their whole front end in your rear view mirror. This way you have created enough space to move in front of them safely. Also give five seconds between switching across multiple lanes. This give you time to ensure the spot is clear and large enough for your vehicle. Know where you are going. Get into proper lanes at least 2 miles before your exit or interchange approaches to avoid last minute multiple lanes changes. STAY OFF YOUR PHONE! I've only been truckin' for a month on my own now and I am hitting a dangerous part of gaining truck driving experience: the part where you start to feel comfortable. I stll wait a few seconds before changing lanes even when I can clearly see it is fine. Especially around turns. I look in both mirrors and wait a few seconds, then get over. If I see someone behind me gaining on me, in the lane I am trying to get into, I stop changing lanes and return to my current lane. I'd rather flip them off or call them 10 different names and get over it in a minute than lose my job. I worked too hard and killed too many nerves to get this far and lose everything. As a truck driver you are held to a higher standard so unfortunately you have to think for everyone else on the road.

@@dwayneg.5128no they aren’t distractions. Not a big rig, but when I pulling the boat or a camper with my 2500HD and turn the blinker on to switch lanes, the camera views for that side come on the screen so I can see what is in the lane in addition to the mirror and blind spot warning. The camera turns off once the blinker is turned off. The cameras are less of a distraction than the radio and offer another level of safety. I can also see ‘through’ the camper and know what’s behind me before turning or changing lanes.

Blind spots are a real thing 😂
@janebrown7231
@janebrown7231 Год назад
Yes, but this wasn't a blind spot accident, it was lane drift. The trucker didn't signal to change lanes and it seems likely he didn't intend to. He drove in a straight line while the road was curving away. If it had been an intentional lane change, he would have been watching his mirrors beforehand and would have known a car was entering his blind spot (if he even had one). Invisibility only lasts for a second or two, unless a car is lurking with zero speed differential. Seems the trucker lost attention - he didn't regain attention either, immediately after the impact, he didn't brake, he didn't reduce speed noticeably, and he continued to drift.

@Travis Williams The truck hits the car. How is the car at fault? First of all, the truck shouldn't have been in that lane. That's I-285. Trucks are supposed to use the two right lanes only, except for some parts of it, and this wasn't one of them. Secondly, the truck should have signal his lane change. Maybe the car might've noticed it and could have sped away from the truck. I drive a truck, and cars pass me all the time, on my left and on my right. Every time I want to get to the right lane, I signal and make it's safe to do so. This guy here switched lanes very recklessly. He just went over as if he were the only vehicle on the road. Don’t skimp on the gas when passing a semi, get clear of their space safely and quickly. Then, after passing, I don’t merge back into their lane until I can see the truck clearly in my center rear-view mirror. If you can only see them in the side view mirrors, you aren’t far enough past them. Some people will try to cut in front as close as possible, and I don’t understand it.

In 1982 I was following a coworker who was in a Harley Sportster on this stretch of 285. He went to exit at 39-A and the rear of his bike started shimmying left and right and as he was entering the curve of the exit he said his bike down. I had to hit the brakes on my pickup hard and go to the right into the grass to avoid him as he slid on his front and shoulders down the exit for about 30-40 yards. Talking about road rash. Totaled his bike but he was able to get up and walk away. Very fortunate! That exit is the 2nd exit in this video. 285 is no joke and people really need to pay attention to what they are doing!

@judieperrin7675 Exactly, I realize it would be a real pain to try to administer that. My first thought was set up tracks across the country where people could go drive or ride on a closed course and have to get the 1 hr orientation certificate to activate their license. You could drive or ride, and have the instructor just show you quickly, we all share the road, if you got it a truck brought it. I know sometimes there slower and people's time is important, teaching car and 4 wheeler drivers what it's like to navigate a big 18+ wheeler would be incredibly helpful and add to saftey. I usually err' to the side of citizens rights and not adding a bunch of bureaucratic "certifications" and more paper work and higher registration fees etc. All this would tale $$$ but it's just an idea, I think someone could launch a pilot program and get started on it anyway.

@@donwat91 I've been driving on 485 for years. The truck wasn't supposed to pass the cammer in the 3rd lane. He's already at fault right there, for starters. Trucks can only drive in the lane 1 and 2, on 485, but this dude was driving in in the 3rd lane. When you add his speed, he didn't get out of this one ,w/o a scratch.

If you notice their blinker turn on and you next to them but you further back than forward slow down and let them over they can't see you.

When my brother taught me how to drive , he told me to always pass or let semis pass and never stay next to them because they can't look at you because they have many blind spots . To this day I follow his advice.

I also had similar advice plus one more: always assume you are the only moral and sober driver out there.

This is why it's illegal to undertake in the UK (pass a vehicle on that vehicle's passenger side).

@@edwardcullen1739It's the same in the States but it's never enforced.

Ot only that before you over take a truck, you should see it in your inside mirror. If you can't see the truck then it's in your blind spot

Counted two lanes right of the truck that was apparently passing the truck shooting the scene.
