Devastating News for Smash. BTS Shutting Down 

Dang summit weekends felt like the melee superbowl. Very sad to see it go.

Man it’s been bad break after bad break since Thanksgiving. Here’s hoping for a better 2023 ahead, we need it

Oh my gosh truly end of an era. I hope everyone finds new jobs right away and no one finds themselves struggling to feed themselves. And like many times in the past I’m not worried because Melee never dies

Feels like the tournament scene got thrown back eight years in the span of three months

Very sad to hear. I remember watching M2K and Axe win summit, the Mango Zain grand finals, all the mafias and the skits. And Mainstage as well. Was very bummed out when I heard the news. Scary stuff

Damn the smash community just lost 3 big majors (2 summits and MainStage) which sucks but hey this community is built off of grassroots somebody will just copy the summit format and make it something else. However there will probably be way less money in it

I am a viewer only and for me summit was THE best tournament to watch every year. Sucks.

People saying Nintendo didn't shut down SWT is like saying "I'm not taking your lunch money, but if you don't give it to me, I'll probably beat you up. Your call."

I wonder if lud held off on buying moist for a few weeks if he'd have offered to take on BTS, Idk, also the space would be awesome for content and as a fan would have been a good result

BTS was and has always been the house Dota built. This year, they lost broadcasting rights for the SEA and NA Dota Pro Circuit. And sure enough, once that happened, they went under. This is a big blow not just to Smash, but Dota. Pretty sure that if the Valve money didn't stop flowing, BTS would still be operational

This is so sad. I've been watching since Apex 2012, seen BTS smash come up and now disappear. Some of the best sports viewing experiences of my life came through those streams. End of a fucking era

I think the scene from the point of view of media, mass-viewership, financials, and EVENTUALLY from a popularity point of view is basically fucked. There will always be players, but trust is completely deteriorated. Nintendo is completely unpredictable when it comes to what they will or won’t shut down, but what IS completely, 100% certain now if it wasn’t before is that Nintendo won’t let it grow, AND may or may not target you. This means no new investors. With every collapse of an old company there will be no new replacements because it’s become more than evident that this is a losing battle. There’s only 2 possible saving graces. 1: somebody with very deep pockets who’s willing to lose money consistently just for the love of the game finances everything (lol). 2. Nintendo magically turns a 180 and completely grabs the bull by the horns and creates their own circuit, and promises to finance everything without any investors needing to meet them halfway with financing (because nobody trusts Nintendo anymore). It wouldn’t even be enough for Nintendo to come out and say “we will stop threatening legal action for anything involving smash” because the history is just so brutal and the trust is totally dead. So unfortunatly; this is the begging of the end. It won’t be long before even top, top players like MKleo are barely making a living wage.

2 weeks severance is only a good thing in the US. That would be outrageously bad anywhere sane

hopefully someone like VGBC or GG can step up. its super sad this is happening but this opens up opportunity for someone to step in. even moist moguls could do something amazing with lud and charlie working together. i will Prayge for the future of smash

I really don't want to have the melee community view Ludwig as the sugar daddy of the community, but I wonder if Offbrand could absorb some of the talent of BTS and keep some of the momentum going. Something might eventually rise up to have a similarly prestigious invitational, but the skill and experience of the BTS team is truly irreplaceable, and its loss is a massive blow to Smash and every other esport working with them

This made me want to cry today. BTS was the best thing to happen to Melee. Also, as for what you were saying about production, we all know BTS and VGBC are the two giants of Smash streaming, and honestly VGBC can’t even hold a candle to BTS. VGBC is complete garbage, eternally greedy, and their production quality is always trash. BTS streams were always fantastic, and I really hope that at least that part of the org stays operational. Regardless, a million genuine thank yous are owed to BTS. Best org of all time.
