One thing is clear that till end paro loved devdas irrespective of what society's rules and regulations and what her family members are thinking...but devdas didn't have same courage to face society during his marriage proposal which ultimately results in his deterioration....paro is matured enough from the beginning... although women had not much social status at that period..still she was much ahead of her time...that's great

Remembered this in the theatres there was pin drop silence when the lamp went out and then followed the audible sniffles and sobs. To this date the climax of Devdas is etched in our memories 😢

beautiful symbolism. the painting of paro’s feet is not unintentional or to heighten the climax. she is reversing her wedding vows and prerogatives she affirmed when she first walked into her in-laws haveli. the knot has come undone with her husband. in hinduism, when a daughter-in-law first enters her in-law’s house, she must perform the ‘pravesh’ by dipping her feet into an alta (red dye) and imprinting her footprints and she steps forth into marriage and it’s tribulations. for paro, the patriarchal entrapment between thakurine and yearning for devdas.

This story happens everyday in the life of millions of individuals round the world. But they remain annonymous and they continue to suffer in silence. Congratulations to the team who has produced this masterpiece and brought in on screen. It revives memories of billions of viewers. Hats off.

I guess I could understand why Paro hysterically running towards Dev in this final secene.. Dev left her for London when they were children. She tried to chase him but failed. Then Dev left the family without bringing her along after getting caught by the father.That led to their break up. This time around she found out Dev was going to leave her again, but now forever..of course she gonna run like crazy.

I still remember reading this and sobbing like crazy!!!! Sharat Chandra Chattapoddhay. What a gem ❤️ if you are a fan of him and then do read "Bamuner meye" its the gender bender version of devdas but more mature and social.

Devdas was too cowardly to claim Paro as his wife. He drank away his feelings for her till he died in a drunken stupor. A pitiful story of Sharat Chandra . Poor women of those times.

I watched this without knowing the book it was based on. The DVD spoiled the ending somewhat so I knew Devdas was going to die, but I figured that at least Paro would be with him in his final moments so he could take some comfort in their doomed love and have some happiness. Definitely did not expect that cruel knife to the gut.

The devdas writer should be praised. What a timeless novel. The great Sarath chandra chattopadyaya lives through these creations.

The actors overplay, there is a problem in the coherence of the timing/editing of the end, but gosh, this is such a beautiful scene, so full of symbolic when you know indian culture, as someone mentionned, the reverted Pravesh ritual, the color of the sari, stained with the kumkum, red like the blood of her scar, and also, there is clearly a reference for Mr SLB Bhansali to Pakeezah. This incredibly moving ending dance scene, you have to watch it : Teer-e-Nazar, when the heroin breaks the lamps and dance on the glass shards out of love pain and despair.. The way her blood stains the white carpeting of, as her aunt says, the house who hurt her in the first place, the family with whom she shares her blood, but he family that rejected her, because of so called "izzat". In both the movies, the women forget all the convention let go of all the constraints that society put on them, and the symbol of that is the white and red dupatta or sari flowing in the air, like a freedom flag, revealing their hair also free to float in the air, their love, their emotions in front of angry dumbfounded men. The scene makes me shiver everytime I watch it, it's so powerful.There is clearly a reference to me. Also, there is a wonderful parallel to make between this scene of Devdas and Padmavat's ending scene : in Devdas the door of patriarchy shut on Paro, she's locked and stopped from rejoining her lover on the threshold of death . In Padmavat, the women close the door on patriarchy and male violence, they close the door on their life on earth, but get their freedom to a purer world where women should not have to make such choices to protect their dignity. Beautiful, mesmerizing, edifying. Love from France
