Ronal George is an application engineer for robotics and autonomous systems at MathWorks. Prior to joining MathWorks in April 2019, Ronal worked as an inside sales engineer at SPX Transformer Solutions and as an electrical design engineer at WindLabs. Ronal has a master’s degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University. As a part of his master’s, Ronal worked with the Advanced Diagnosis, Automation and Control (ADAC) Laboratory to develop planning and localization algorithms for multiagent systems.
Jose Avendano is a robotics engineer from MathWorks specialized in robotics research and education. Other previous experience includes modeling, simulation, and algorithm development for robot manipulators, autonomous rendezvous and collaboration for zero-gravity navigation, and robust estimation and control of flexible vehicle structures.

Can someone write what are actual limitations when using Simulink+ROS/ROS2 vs. hand written ROS/ROS2 app?

Hi Jose and Ronal. Great demo!. But I cant find the demo file link. Where can I find the file download link?

Hi! The files for this are not available. But here are a couple of demos for autonomous navigation that also use ROS. I hope those are helpful. www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/95998-autonomous-navigation-for-mobile-robots-and-ugv www.mathworks.com/help/robotics/ug/simulate-a-mobile-robot-using-gazebo.html www.mathworks.com/help/robotics/ug/sign-following-robot-with-time-synchronization-using-ros-and-gazebo-co-simulation.html

@@jnaahg thank you for response Jose. Yor recommendation is interesting. But I want to follow the process of multi fiedelity simulation Ronal presented. And want to make ROS rc car by myself just like your demo. Is it impossible to share the demo?

Were you using a matlab gazebo pacer block for the simulations? Or was the communication not hard realtime? Ros itself is not hard realtime right? So what would you do if you want to design a low level motor controller. Should you exclude ros and write it directly in c++? Or are there possibilities with matlab for this?

I believe there was no pacing on these demos but you can certainly sync up Gazebo with Simulink with the pacer block if you want higher simulation fidelity. The communication was asynchronous, ROS is not real-time but can achieve very fast responses, ROS2 has communication protocol improvements for quality of service that were made specifically to be more competitive for developing real-time systems so you can look into that. Motor controllers generally do benefit from deterministic controller executions and high frequencies. Normally it is best to program a microcontroller or other real-time device for the low-level controllers and have them interact asynchronously with a ROS network that can set higher-level commands. Simulink support for Arduino or other microcontrollers (TI C200, STM32, raspberry pi, etc) or Simulink Real-Time can make it easier to develop those low-level controllers. Hope this helps.

why not ROS2 ?

You can definitely do the same with ROS2, this robot just happened to be developed in ROS. There are some ROS2 examples in the toolbox documentation that show ROS2 workflows. Search for MATLAB ROS Toolbox Documentation.
