Developing Performance Specification for High Performance Concrete 0-6958 

In the past, TxDOT considered achieving high strength as the main design criteria to formulate high performance concrete (HPC). The mix design options 1-4 in item 421 were developed for Alkali-Silica Reaction mitigation, and not for other durability aspects. The TTI research team conducted field investigations, as well as conventional and innovative new lab testing methods, to develop a performance specification for high performance concrete in terms of durability. The project formulated wide varieties of prescriptive mixes that can meet the durability requirements matching with different exposure conditions. This could potentially encourage contractors to effectively use these fine-tuned prescriptive HPC mixtures without the need to conduct additional long duration testing. Ultimately, the project findings help ensure long lasting durable concrete on the infrastructure, while saving tax payer dollars.
