SIEM REAP - The tourism industry has long been a vital driver of Cambodia’s economic progress. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a severe blow to this sector, presenting formidable challenges.
Despite our optimism for a tourism recovery post-pandemic, the number of foreign tourists visiting Cambodia, especially in Siem Reap province, remains depressingly low.
While Cambodia is rich in natural resources and boasts a diverse cultural and historical heritage that could be leveraged to create compelling multi-day tourism experiences for both domestic and international visitors, the country's limited tourism offerings for foreign tourists, as compared to its neighbors, stem from factors such as underdevelopment and insufficient innovation.
The lack of investment in promoting ecotourism and sustainable tourism is hindering Cambodia's ability to compete with other nations in the region. In an insightful interview with Cambodianess, Duch Sareth, a tour operator in Siem Reap, touches upon the underlying issues impeding Cambodia’s tourism industry and proposes constructive solutions to foster its development.
