Joe is one of the academical monument from HBS. I remember a standing ovation that we had after one of his amazing lecture. Still recall how jack welch, former CEO at GE, made the cut based on the outcome of a succession contest initiated by H. Jones his predecessor. Lifelong takeaway Joe.Thanks a million.....
@SteveHovland: I couldn't have said it better myself. People get tired of overworking and doing more than their lazy counterparts and it goes unappreciated. This is one of the many reasons I'm starting my own business.
+Bloombaby99 Not all companies are what you described though. There are good companies out there that care about their employees cause they know the improvement is based upon experience and knowledge and keeps their company going and the only way to find these people is by employing them or improving their employees. Some companies will have to learn the hard way about this for the ones that don't give opportunities when the time comes for them to change.
havard must be taking some leading strides in the changing landscape of the education business. wonder what havard envisions the future of the education business to be?
@noizereduction Self-proclaimed "entrepreneurs"? what does that even mean ? If you're a person that looks for gaps in markets and then creates businesses that fill that gap and provide good products/services to the world then guess what... you're an entrepreneur... it's something you DO not something you "proclaim" yourself to be. As for people who can't communicate with clarity, go seek out your OWN teachers that you respect and who you can learn from and start their and quit complaining.

What a joke! Don't listen to this guy! He's been in academia his entire life! Why would you take business advice from someone that's never run a business?
PLEASE do a divination about April garcia and her short horrible life and help me I'm going to die tourtured in my bedroom and I'll never be reincarnated i need chanting help now and to be reincarnated later with a helper i really can make you all powerful just reincarnate me MY GOD PLEASE
irony is successful CEOs neither have time nor inclination to listen to or follow such videos. Prof like these, they just examine lives of successful CEOs and interpret in their own ways and publish them. And people like you and I listen to them in a vain hope that we would one day become a successful CEO after listening and following this. I think successful CEO is all about execution with commonsense and intelligence.
I think this is a new thing. You being able to listen to these types of talks on the way to work. Gather information and learn. You have the old way of thinking. Guys keep going, you learn and you apply and you grow.
If your company has 2 straight quarters of losses, goodbye CEO. Just ask the CEO of MySpace who was fired 8 months into the job because of Facebook. Nowadays CEOs are three times more like to lose their jobs. Its not easy to be a CEO.
Inside almost every large organization people complain about too many managers and too few leaders, but all the real leaders most companies hire are quickly forced out or assigned to the hinterlands because they challenge the status quo, which is typically a little gang of cronies at the top. Companies talk about developing leaders but they develop managers.
How they gonna help you grow Pattern of assignment Learning or just work Mentoring Training How early can you run a business-- how many indpendent businesses are there to own You deliver- what you commit You help others Being with you is upliftment How you manage up- do they see you as a problem coming or you help them Too competitive or trustworthy Transparent not beating bush- i screwed up, here's what i am gonna do Network- outsise division, outside company, customer, vendors, community service to get what is going in the world Ngo is leadership development WLB- intentionally plan for holidays and birthdays
@andrefsferreira You are kind of right, but these tips can help you just going up the organization, and developing yourself. At least that's my opinion.
@noizereduction Interesting perspective, sir. I feel that entrepreneurs are the life blood of this country. It sounds like you've been around one too many arrogant business people. At the end of the day, we are trying to sell ourselves, though. However, humility can go a long way.
Your thought process is admirable. It reminds me of a literary masterpiece. "The Hidden Empire: Inside the Private Worlds of Elite CEOs" by Various Authors

Not going to watch all of this. Whos above the CEOs (technically I know who)? Is it the Board of Directors? I always thought the CEOs were the ones who owned the business the most. Its not... its the Board of Directors due to the SHAREHOLDER or STOCKHOLDER? Is it the Board of Directors that own that?
After reading a ton of text business book, saying only how to and qualification of leadership none say about this.Leader must lead ownself well first before lead the follower or sub ordinater. Why if he can the other can as well.
+Kenny Liang If its so bad then why are you watching and commenting with only a few words that don't contribute or have any sort of constructive criticism.
Seriously? This guy is a Harvard Professor? Wow...some standard they have at Harvard. Seriously though, I thought Harvard is supposed to have one of the best business programs in the nation. Academia does not prepare you for business.
+Um Hu Its a knowledge base that you have to learn to be able and work in business. The experience of working in business comes with being in the company. Get your facts right.
***** But thats like very few in a thousand of people that work for a company within a thousand companies out there. That doesn't always happen every day. Your mindset seems to think all companies operate in some totalitarian government. Which isn't always true.
+Cristian Sequera Could've used another metaphor such as "beat around the bush". Honesty and Integrity are what managers look for. The ability to tell the truth of what happened and the integrity to take responsibility for it and fix it.
