Tim I absolutely loved your video, I solo dive Devils Lake at least 30 times a year and have to say you captured the true essence of what it is like diving DL. I also love the song you selected.
It's my understanding there is a vehicle at the bottom of the lake that fell through the ice decades ago. Would be neat to capture what it looks like today.
If a newspaper article from the time is to be believed and my memory is correct, the car was actually retrieved because the ice refroze in the days after it fell through
omg... ha-ha! awwwuh, that was the cutest thing ever when you tickled underneath the lil fishy! and so cool how you fed the first one the crayfish... or did you make friends with it and he was following you like a lost lil puppy? lol too cute... oh yeah and MADISON! 💕 ...gotta represent heh heh
That first fish surprised me when he came out of nowhere to snatch up that crayfish; I thought I was freeing the little guy. Those Smallmouth Bass do tend to follow the divers around like dogs looking for some help getting (crayfish) snacks.
well the one that let you "coochie coo" him, that was just too adorable! we used to go to devil's lake every summer when I was a kid. my dad loved to snorkel out there. thank you so much for sharing this! it really was a joy to watch. =))
glad you enjoyed it and it brought back good memories. The "coochie coo" bass was kind of a bully - chasing away other bass that wanted in on the action.
Sony AS100v Action Cam. I got a 4K Sony FDR X3000 and a GoPro Hero 5 Black a couple years later, but they're not as good as that AS100v. I don't have any special settings -just put in underwater mode.
I go to the last parking area on the north entrance. There are a few places where entry/exit is easier there. Then swim south near shore for a hundred yards or so to get by the uw platform, signs, statue(s), big rocks. Or, after parking, walk south by the railroad tracks for a while until you find a relatively easy entry point.
Oh yeah. Dive shops in Madison (about an hour SE) go there, and I've seen shops and individuals from IL, IA, and MN there, too. Of course, everyone brings there own gear and tanks as 3LD is gone.
OK, I know Tamm from Diversions. We've gone climbing there many times and always wanted to dive so will look into it. Is swimmers itch a concern there? Someone told me they don't swim on the south side because of it. Thanks for the quick response.
This is near the north shore. Go to the very end of the last parking lot and walk south down the train tracks a couple hundred yards. There are a number of underwater structures in that area. The visibility hasn't been as good, though, this year the several times I've been there. Also, happy birthday!
Yes, divers must carry a dive flag there. Sometimes, I'll tie it off, and scuba nearby, though. -gotta be careful not to get too far from it as fisherman often have lines in the water around there.
The VW Bug is in Lake Geneva, I have seen it several times. Its actually pretty shallow in about 10-12 feet of water. There is a bigger Cabin Cruiser not too far from the bug but it's 65 feet deep.
Most of that video was shot in about 20-25 feet of water - about 20-50 feet from shore. The lake is about 44 feet at its deepest near the middle but there's not much to see out there. The underwater visibility was abnormally good the day I shot the video - and many other days that summer, but typically it can vary quite a bit even from one day to the next.
I was planning to go today for the first time in 3 years. For about a month or two in 2015, the viz was the best I ever saw, but the two years after viz wasn't even good enough to bother.
I heard about this flood on the meateater podcast one of his guests entire farm flooded and theu gave away their trailers in hopes of them not going to waste
+Timothy Welnetz It looks really awesome though. Nice looking largemouths as well as blue gill. I thought it was DL ND. I was wondering why it was so clear.
