@@antoniorand1833 he has a really specific way to unlock him as a team leader and even if you the events you still might not be able to use him depending on the ending you go for.
Fun fact: Overclocked has the most voice lines compared to any other Atlus game. In fact, they weren’t sure if all of it could fit into the game card storage.
@Djokover215 In fact, this game is one of the hardest to get on 3DS (in EU region). I was very lucky to buy one two years ago for about 80EU - french distribution though. Nowadays, it easily goes above 100EU price-tag. Same for its sequel which I still don't have :-(
One of my favorite parts of this game is that every character has an animated stance when it comes to the turn based combat, except you and a certain someone else, showing that you're very much different than everyone else
a really weird argument to make, considering devil survivor is a fusion between two really niche genres, and persona exists, but i suppose it could be made
@@bestbeekeeper8931 yeah, but it's immediately engaging. it's absolutely fantastic and i can't believe i didn't play it earlier, though, so that's not a diss in the slightest. it certainly hooked me faster than almost any other game i've ever played (some exceptions like doom 2016 exist tho)
@@Fizz-Q I'm not sure about a game getting remastered for the third time lol, I think I'd prefer a new DS entry. But I'm more hyped for SMTV rn tho lol
Devil Survivor (Overclocked) is literally the only SMT related game I loved from head to toe. It is such an amazing gem of a game. Amazing music combined with the most narratively easy to digest story in the SMT saga is a must-play for anyone interested in SMT or any RPG!
Alright you've convinced me to replay it. Man I really loved this game. The story gripped me right from the start and I felt like I was fighting for my life alongside the characters.
Devil Survivor is the best. I recently played and i loved both. Had the good characters, interesting story , top tier gameplay and easily the best endings/aligments system. Naoya's ending and Human Admin are some of my favorite endings ever. 10/10 Games.
@llinium Are you brazillian? Thats neat. And Naoya ending is the best. It's badass , a very satisfiying ending and we got to punch Metatron on the face. All i need in a smt game.
My first MegaTen, still my favorite. Has a great story, and I prefer the strategic battles over dungeon crawling. Picked it up on a whim from Gamestop shortly after release. Got home and had the worst panic attack I have ever had. Thought I was having a heart attack. Thought "Well, if I'm going to die, I'm at least going to play the game I just bought". The game tells me: +++Peaceful days are over.+++ +++ Let's survive.+++ Suddenly it was several hours later and I had completely forgotten about whatever I was worrying about. I was hooked. Recently started a replay to get the Chaos ending, which I haven't done before. It is reeeal weird playing during a quarantine and lockdown.
Great video!!! When I randomly bought this game on the eshop; I was amazed by how the plot became so dangerous so quickly. The corruption of the government-brushing over and hiding issues like its nothing; the ensuing hoards of demons who were dangerous yet also controllable, SHOMANKAI CULTISTS, the hidden threat from the heavens; and the people who wavered between keeping to their morality or breaking it in such chaotic times... Devil Survivor is so damn good!!
i finished devil survivor for the first time last sunday, and I wholeheartedly agree with this video, it was an amazing game and I'll keep playing it until i go through every ending at least twice.
Devil Survivor may be difficult as heck but everything else about the game is so enticing and enjoyable I’d see why anyone would label this as their favorite
Crimshit I mean yeah but that’s what a lot of people say about it and is why they put it off from their top games, me personally I found the game balanced perfectly
I coincidentally bought devil survivor overclocked last Friday and I'm having such a great time with it. I haven't watched the whole video since i don't want to be spoiled but pretty cool seeing some srpg love around!
Eh. I played Devil Survivor Overclocked and didn't particularly enjoy it. I found the overall presentation very unappealing and the core gameplay doesn't really work as a tactics RPG. It's missing the rock-paper-scissors dynamic that actually makes your unit positioning consequential. It plays more like a conventional JRPG with a superficial coat of tactics paint slapped on top. I'm not saying anyone is wrong to like it, but I really struggle to understand how it could be anyone's favorite MegaTen game.
No one ever talks about this game ! I remember buying it back in 2011 because of the lack of interesting 3DS launch games, expecting it to be something similar to The World Ends With You and wow was I way off. The difficulty was a big problem for me at first as having never played a SMT game I assumed you didn’t really NEED to fuse demons, I could just keep leveling up the ones I have like Pokémon. Getting demon fusion down was one of the most satisfying feelings in a video game I had. Also speaking of favorite moments, your first encounter with Beldr when you have no option but to escape, literally crack. This game is so so so underrated and I can’t thank it enough for getting me into SMT,.
This was my first SMT game that I played. After seeing part of a playthrough of P4 I wanted to get into the series somehow and I found a copy of Overclocked and it is easily my favorite game on the 3DS. I love this game to death
i could listen to the overworld song on repeat for days, its so catchy and you hear it for such a long amount of time in this game and yet it never gets boring. definitely one of my favorites when it comes to menu music
I actually had the literal exact same experience but for me it was with devil survivor 2. It was my first ever megami tensei game which I only got because I was at a GameStop while visiting some family and saw it on sale and thought it looked interesting, and I’m really glad I got it. Sure it’s not as good as the original but it’s one hell of a game which introduced me to one of, if not my favourite franchise ever.
Personally I think it's too much grinding/demon maintenance. Plus you're pretty much using the same few builds for every single demon you have... the endgame doesn't really encourage experimentation because you'll get your ass spanked without some key moves/resistances
I don’t know what you mean by that. I experimented a lot especially on the last day. Fucking Belberith forced me to get demons with long range teleportation
@@dailydoseofvitaminc6565 Honestly Belberith isnt even the problem for me. Its the god damn respawning demons and distance you have to travel to get to him thats hard. Once I get there holy dance him along with demons that do the same and ggs.
Huh well I gave Atsuro rage soul and dual shadow and he ate everything alive and made every encounter after a complete joke, did the same with Kaido in his ending but had attack all it made everything at 7th day an absolute cakewalk even Babel's 2 forms couldn't withstand 2 turns of fighting againts these two
What I love about Devil Survivor is how normal you as a main character feel. For example, I love how the tutorial is about all the characters figurin out how stuff works and not your main protagonist being the shiny example. I also usually feel pretty mighty in Megaten Games. Most of it's protagonists are realy badasses and even when the games are hard, that just makes you feel even more badass. I constantly felt this dread when playing Devil Survivor, even after the first boss, where the game gets significantly easier, I constantly felt that I am pushing against the odds.
One of the things I noticed most in going back to Devil Survivor 1 after playing 2 multiple times was how much more grounded the first game is. You can't act on your meta knowledge that not only will you survive the lockdown, but you have the potential to take on any entity in the game.
I remember spending many a night playing Devil Survivor Overclocked, the sense of dread with every small plot twist (not unlike reading a good detective book). I still want to 100% it.
honestly you take the words right out of my mouth. people sometimes scoff at me when I tell them that devil survivor is my favourite game in the megaten series cause its not nocturne or a kuzunoha game but honestly everything about it just works. every time someone asks me what they should play to get more into the mainline series (mainly after getting into persona) i always say devil survivor cause its such a great blend of both worlds.
Well, what a coincidence this video on my youtube recommend!I'm literally playing this game on ds emu and it's also my first smt game..Basically on my way to fight beldr and hope for more tips of building a demon..by the way, great vid!thx for showing your love in this game:)
Was my first SMT game as well. Actually, I didn't even pick this one up specifically. I had just gotten a DS back when I was in highschool through those not so legitimate stores that sell you the device along with an R4 packed with selected pirated games and shit. This just happened to be one of those games I picked cuz "hurr durr devil in the title so kulz" and Mom kept pestering me to just nab as many games as I can and not just pick Pokemon. I played it but didn't immediately got hooked cuz I was more into Pokemon that time, so I only started the first battle tutorial and got absorbed into Diamond and Pearl the moment I started playing those. Fast forward a couple months when I was bored, and I actually played it... Then, I heard the slapping ass battle BGM. Then I finally got to look at Yuzu enough times to go on fire. Then met Beldr and the kickass BGM slapping too fucking hard. Then I nearly had my stubborn ass wiped with a stupid surprised look on my face when Beldr just went lolnoped on everything I did on the first encounter. Then I met Mind Amane and my fondness for seductive evil alteregos sprang up. Then I got to see Gin bitchslap Azuma. Hoo boi. Did I ever wonder when the hell I had something like this sitting around. Further fast forward when I found out it had a remake for the 3DS, it was an instant buy. I'm glad I finally got around to legitimately buying it. Played that one up till I beat Lucifer for the second time and 100% it again. 11/10 give me Abel's headphones and his sweater.
His reasoning for Devil Survivor being his favorite game really reminded me of why Persona 4 is my favorite game. So I think that’s enough to warrant a check out B)
Devil Survivor was my first Megaten game. I originally discovered it in grade 9 because I was looking for something similar to World Ends With You. And boy am I glad to have discovered it. Have played Devil Survivor 2, SMT IV, apocalypse, Soul Hackers, Strange Journey, Mirage Sessions, Nocturne, and SMT V since then x) It's still the only Megaten game where I was motivated enough to get all the endings.
Devil survivor was my first megaten game! I'm replaying both games currently aswell on my 3ds. I got both over clocked and recordbreaker. I even got the collector edition for recordbreaker!
Thank you for making this video and talking about also my favorite best MegaTen game! Devil Survivor is the perfect game to start the series, the NDS era brought me into SMT with Strange Journey being actually my first. I enjoyed how you talk about every aspect of the game, picking up every detail the way a person who loves all the ups and downs. And I also make Yuzu a warhead character with Devil Speed and Flight/Phantasma :D P.S Your Intros are getting slick, simple and better with each new video posted!
I decided not to comment at the time this video was uploaded but I love Devil Survivor so much. And a line you always say that blows me away is that the game is a 20-30 hour experience. In my first playthrough I spent 100 hours because I was so addicted to the fusion and story, only to go onto the Wiki and find out I missed an insane amount of content. I am very excited to replay it next year in New Game+ with a walkthrough.
I had the very unique experience of playing this and devil survivor 2 for the first time during coronavirus quarantine back in april. It was my first tactical rpg. Masterpiece indeed.
Incredible game, and while some see the strategy rpg aspect as a weakness, I have it to thank for getting me into the series. The similarities to Fire Emblem movement is what inspired me to pick it up (Overclocked, specifically) and try it out, been hooked ever since. It was my first game of the franchise and it’s still a favorite of mine
great video!! devil survivor 1 is easily my favorite game of all time. i've got hundreds of hours in it, imported practically every official desu merch i could find, and honestly i don't think i can ever get over what a fantastic game it is. the music, story, characters, atmosphere... all 10/10 to me. so happy to see someone else appreciate it as well!
I bought the 3DS version of this game last night. I wasn't originally going to buy any more 3DS games since I'd already finished my eShop shopping spree, but I kinda just randomly remembered this existed and that I've heard a lot of good things about it.
I always saw this game on a old "club nintendo" magazine... were i read the game premise... just understanding that everything was weird and apocaliptic... know I'm 18... I will play this game right know, thanks for giving me a reason to!
I’m new to the franchise, and Devil Survivor Overclocked has become my second favorite SMT game, after Strange Journey Redux. I’m on the seventh day, and I thought I’d finish the game today... but it’s going to take me longer, because I think I might’ve chosen the hardest route, lol. Well, I’ve grown to love the gameplay, so I don’t mind grinding.
Devil survivor was my entry to the series. I found it on sale in 2010ish for around $15. The cover looked so cool and I'd never heard of smt before. It quickly became the only thing I thought about as I struggled through each route back to back, and I was thrilled to learn there were other SMT games. I loved that my choices had an impact, I loved these characters, and I loved the conflict between feeling so helpless and so powerful. I remember when overclocked came out and I played straight through until I finished the 8th day, then I did the same thing the day after for another route. I lent my copy to all my friends and ended up converting more than a few because it's just so good.
Devil Survivor 1 and 2 in my book still have the best fusion system. Not only can you search demons and their requirements more easily, but the Level filter (best filter) shows you a few demons beyond your current level, so you get hyped for leveling up and can plan ahead. Genius.
I've been collecting all the smt games passively since my childhood and only after playing persona 4 I realized that they were all made by the same people. That was when I was 13 I was not bright. This was one of my favorites.
It's cool to see another lover of the franchise's take on it! Tbh I'm the same way, but it's 2 that is my favorite game (I played it before 1... maybe thats why?)
I would kill to see you do a playthrough of this game on your channel; it gets forgotten so often when people talk about SMT games which is just a damn shame. Its a fucking banger of the game and my experience with it was actually like yours in reverse. I started with Devil Survivor(on emulation actually since I didn't own it until much later) and later got P3. I never beat it and still haven't to this day; its a surprisingly challenging game with so much going on. :D
Devil survivor was my first intro to SMT, and I was fucking HOOKED. I still remember being confused by skill names at first (used to FF and DQ), and played thru like 4 times just trying different outcomes. I couldn't wait for 2 to come out and didn't have to wait long at the time. I then went a got a 3DS just to play Overclocked. My most anticipated game of all time would be a 3rd game released on switch. Shit I'd even settle for a switch port of oberclocked/ record breaker.
If Nyarly spent as much time discussing the gameplay mechanics, storyline, themes, characters, lore and development as he did simply playing music then this might actually be a half-decent video.
after playing persona 3 and 4 I wanted to try another smt game and I remembered this video and my god its a LOT more difficult than I was expecting but I'm having tones of fun none the less so thank you for making this video and probably making me a smt fan
Devil survivor was my first SMT game. I remember back when I was 14 or 15 i was browsing through CoolRoms with my cousin looking for cool DS games to play and Devil Survivor was one of the games that popped up. We downloaded it and I was immediately hooked by the opening song. And I played through the main story and fell enough with it, loving the lockdown and the mystery behind it.
My introduction to MegaTen was SMT Imagine since I was a bit of an MMO junkie back in high school around 2011-2012. So when I found out the MMO I was playing was part of a greater video game franchise, I had to try out a "real" (as in single player) game. And the most recent SMT game at the time was Devil Survivor: Overclocked. Like you, it wasn't the first Megaten I played but it was the first I finished. And with 8 playthroughs, it might be my most played game of all time. The game set the bar so high for SMT, that SMT 4, my first mainline SMT game underwhelmed me as I found myself unable to care about the story or characters. This was before I found out that good story and characters is actually unfortunately a rarity in MegaTen and that Devil Survivor was one of the few exceptions, not the rule. And lastly, I love Yasuda's art style. His style of eyes fits so well with SMT, I found myself looking there instead of where gravity does not exist. And boy, its really refreshing to see someone who likes DS1 more than DS2. I thought my preference of DS1 was considered the unpopular opinion. Devil Survivor 1 Luciferis the hardest boss in video game history, fight me. After Devil Survivor, I tried Persona 4 and the rest was history.
this was my first one as well, I don't remember much cause I beat it so long ago but what I do remember is that it's indeed a criminally underrated game even for smt standards
So back in like 2012 little ol me found a polish ytber that happened to record a full lets play on SMT Devil Survivor and I have to say: Im sure it was my 1st ever "weeb"/Japanese game I've ever seen and watched from start to finish and so Im pretty sure my story about being a weeb begun similarily to you which only shows how small the world. wow this video is a nostalgia trip for me
I have to thank you for this video. I ended up giving Devil Survivor a look because of it and it's now not just my favorite MegaTen game (behind Persona 5 Royal), it's my favorite SRPG of all-time. It hits a really good balance between the depth of the worldbuilding of mainline with the social elements of Persona. Also, that SOUNDTRACK. Definitely my favorite OST in the series at large. If you're a Persona fan like I was (and still am) and haven't checked out any other SMT games, give Devil Survivor a look-see. It's a pretty good bridgd, I'd say!
I'm on the third day of thus game and when you're right, you're right, tried other smt and persona, and the fusion always kept me from it, but this game eased me into it and am hooked, will try others after this one.
@Nyarly just a friendly reminder to either not use the background at 1:25 or make a warning at the start of the video since there are people who might get a epilepsi seizure from it
Devil Survivor was my second none persona game, I went persona 4 Golden, persona 3 portable, smt 4, then smt devil suvivor over clocked. It was the first game I attually beat (my persona files got erased due to the stupid memory cards, I was so close to the end. Smt 4 was good, but I got more drawn into Devil Survivor) and I played it everyday until I beat it, then started it again after I beat it for the first time. My first ending was the demon lord of humanity ending, my favorite ending!
Totally agree with this! Devil Survivor Overclocked was my first SMT game. And it is still one of my favorites. I played almost all DS and 3DS SMT games by now - I am just missing the second Persona Q 2. Also played Persona5, TokyoMirageSessions and the first SMT on an emulator. I never had a PS2 or PS3 so I am still missing tons of games. My favorite so far is Soul Hackers. It is not the best game but it was enjoyable to me.
Okay so I can say I love this game to bits as well, picked it up during the period of lockdown when covid first hit and honestly it felt both topical and relatable. The characters are well thought out and have genuine reasons and concerns without regarding the plotlines around them, like poor Yuzu who just wants to go home for the first few days of the game. Also I liked the system of them forcing you to be smart with stats in the game, though if you did a second playthrough you could just invest enough points into STR to allow the use of Megidoloan later in the game and have a Tyrant (I think that's the right race anyway) which gives you magic back each round of combat and basically steamroll through the late game with your 40 Magic stat. It made you think and have to play smart which was incredibly rewarding!
QoL is underrated, and moreover in SRPGs. I'm not a fan of being babied through a game, but I'm a firm believer that any statistic should be reasonably explained and easily accessible.
i feel you and now i want to get back to overclocked so i can see the additional content, i would not have been able to put those words out better myself, but now you may have made a challenge i'd like to see though i know it would be hard in the start
Amazing video. You really put into perspective how awesome Devil Survivor is. I had the updated version on 3ds back in the day but I didn't get far. Kudos 2 u still for a great video.
