I've received many comments about this, such as, "I'm just a fresher, what can I do?" and "Why is there so much hype?" Let's explore these questions.
Is this the end of the software engineer? Let's discuss.
I have over six years of experience in software engineering and have worked with many developers who have more than 20 years of experience in this industry. For this video, I've gathered thoughts from many people, including software engineers with over 30 years of experience from all around the world.
So, let's dive into what software engineers do:
Design
Develop (They spend most of their time checking the code directory, planning, and if they have any doubts, they use Google to fix the issue.)
Debug
Test (Create test cases and test multiple functions)
Document
Deploy
What does this AI do? It provides an interface that brings all these functions into one place. It has separate areas to create code, analyze code, and test after deployment.
Features include:
Own command line
Own code editor
Own browser
Initially, I needed to add some APIs, check my site performance, and provide documentation. The AI uses the browser to read docs, create code, debug, and test, showing the output. That's great!
But will it replace all software engineers? No. The human touch is critical in every aspect.
For example, this AI does what software engineers do, such as taking some data from old code, trying multiple times, and solving the code.
But what if the AI doesn't have the data to solve the code, or it's a first-time error? What does the AI do then?
Let's take a real-time use case!
WordPress and Shopify allow you to create a website within an hour. Did they completely replace web developers when they launched a few years back? No.
High-budget businesses need unique websites with specific functions. They won't use the same tools as low-budget businesses.
Chat GPT came in 2022. Did all software engineers lose their jobs? No. But it's beneficial to many people, including me.
For example, a few months ago, people thought content creation could be replaced by chat GPT. The idea was to create a script, use an AI tool for voice, post a video, and make money. Many people failed.
Why? How many of you have subscribed to AI-based channels? Probably 1 out of 10. I haven't subscribed to a single one. They're boring.
But Chat GPT helps me solve errors faster at work.
When did research into autonomous cars start? Any guesses? The 1930s. It's still not fully functioning, but some features, like reversing, are easy.
One last question. Do you think a high-priority company like HDFC would use AI to create code for transactions? As an employee of one of the top 500 Fortune companies and one of the world's top financial companies, I haven't seen a single person using chat GPT in the office.
Why? Because of security.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was ordered to pay $210 million to DXC Technology by a Texas court in a trade secrets case. The world is at that stage; it will not replace all engineers.
Even Cognition AI stated that it's not a replacement for developers. It's useful for developers but won't replace them.
So, don't believe the rumors. If you learn something, it won't be a waste. Focus on your effort, not on the output.
But work smart. Use the help of AI.
