Every bass player AND drummer should watch and study this video. Less is always more! Uneducated musicians think reggae is boring, but 90 percent of drummers out there can't hold down a one drop beat, and then the bass players over-play...and everything falls apart! Awesome video!

Devon, thank you so much. I was a self taught bass player, played in a few bands in Belgrade, Serbia but I havent found anyone interested for reggae so I quit in 2011. Didnt played my bass even for myself. I found yor videos where you played bass lines and patterns which motivated me to play again. Please continue with playing and teaching with your friend on drums, who is also great and I like to jam with his riddim. If you go to Serbia, do not hesitate to contact me... Take care S.

This is by far the best reggae bass lesson I've seen on youtube yet! Worlda respect! I would've liked if you mentioned that the bass pretty much defines reggae music. Classic foundation bass riddims rule the dancehall still, over 50 years after those riddims were first created and recorded, which just shows how powerful and ingenious those deceptively simple basslines (and of course the bass players who came up with them) really are.

You can actually apply what he said in this vid to all different kinds of music. The most affective bass lines are the one with space in them. It's not how many notes you play, but what notes you play and how you play them! Great stuff, drummer is great too!

Great music tutorial! Only well seasoned musicians know that you have to let the music breath. It's important that you don't over play. You have to do what's required. The less you put in the groove the better. When adlibbing, you don't have to prove to others that you can play for you're only entertaining yourself only. Space, silence and gaps is music also and not just the notes or beats. This goes for any instrument. Everyone be careful out there..

So much more raw and such than the usual stuff I lisiten to like Fleetwood Mac (even their early blues stuff) Billy Joel and stuff like that, which I've been playing to. I've been playing instruments for many years and bass from about 20 to now 26, but I only just recently figured out that basslines, the actual note timing doesn't always go right with the drum / other drum kit parts on the money, there's this variation unique to every song.. and didn't figure this out until I slowed tracks down to really listen. This is really cool, thank you for sharing.
