Devongunsmith Diaries#11 Air Arms S410 Seal service
The Devongunsmith Diaries concept was conceived by me during lock down, and the premise was to be able to perform work without a fully set up gunsmiths workshop, but rather, using just the Cottage Kitchen Table, a few hand tools, some cordless tools, a table vice, and other small DIY tools.
While the channel is not specifically intended to be a how to guide, it is mainly for entertainment.
While in the UK gunsmithing must be performed by the Licenced Gun Trade, RU-vid is without borders, and if the channel is useful to someone as either entertainment, or indeed helps you to decide if a repair might be possible, then I have been a help to you.
As an Amazon Associate, I earn a small commission from qualifying purchases, this helps to support the Devongunsmith Channel, The following are products I use regularly.

Don't just screw the dosing chamber in, it's factory set at 57.5mm for optimum curve. If you look through the holes where the grub screw goes, that holds the pot in place, you'll be able to see where the grub screws have left a mark, this'll help get it back to where it was if you have no vernier gauge for precise measuring.

It’s literally easier to get a kit. About 15 years ago I started cataloguing the sizes.. then I started stocking all the sizes to pick and mix for kits.. but o-ring seals go bad after about a year. So I gave up on that. Hydraulic oil rings often can be obtained from agricultural/ tractor/ digger suppliers Salvage the o rings measure them with verniers and buy only the rings you need 👍

Watched your very informative video twice before deciding to do a full seal service. All was going well until about 20mins into the video when a whole section on actually removing the barrel from the housing appears to be missing. However, I managed to figure it out and have removed the barrel but the brass end bit that has the seals in has been left behind in the housing. Any ideas on how to get this out, pls?

Please provide the time stamp for the portion you think is missing? I don’t have the original source video as this was over a year ago.

@@devongunsmith4698 At 19:47 inot the video it jumps from showing the barrel fixed to the housing and then jumps to the barrel and all internal brass stuff undone and on your bench without showing how you did it

@@nickdelaforce8810 you undo the top grub screws and pull it out. The brass breech: You use a rounded edge like a ball end of an Allen key and GENTLY PUSH IT OUT from the breech end. From 22.49 shows how to do this when I re-seat the breech brass. It’s the same method.

Great video most informative. Had my S410 for for over 20 years no issues so far. Like yours ive the 'A' model. Coupled with an old Simmons Whitetail Classic 1.5 - 5 x 20 great for vermin control. Have not serviced or replaced the cylinder( should I? }

If it’s not broke don’t fix it. The cylinder has very little to go wrong, apart from fill valve and regulator. Enjoy 👍

Hello,i have recently purchased a S410 classic(2004 i believe) and the firing pot is only 20mm in length, all the info online and the pot in this guns is 65.5mm in length do you know if the pre anti tamper guns came with a shorter pot?

Hi Simon, off the cuff I cannot remember. I do know many PCP rifle manufacturers do have multiple iterations of their products. Which is one of the reasons I’m no longer repairing modern PCP rifles. airgundoctor.co.uk is a factory trained air rifle specialist he can solve your problem.

Hi, just seen your video the other day and glad if it, I've just bought a second hand s410 which is needing a gd clean, it's not an old gun but has been sitting for a while and found that the bolt is quite stiff so was stripping it down to give it a gd clean and re grease where needed, but have a major issue trying to slacken the 5mm bolt at rear of hammer housing, I'm guessing it's been thread locked as I can't budge it, any advice you can offer would be appreciated, I really Don't want to heat it as I'm sure it will damage the finish. Cheers

A limited amount of heat can help. And I mean limited.. there are plastic components that will melt in the upper receiver.. If you have an electrical soldering iron, get it hot and put the tip into the 5mm hex.. test carefully! With your finger As to how hot it is.. carefully! And periodically try to crack it with an Allen key.. The heat from a candle flame on the head of the screw for a few seconds can sometimes soften the lock-tite or corrosion enough to undo it. But don’t be too heavy handed on the heat or cranking the Allen key.. It should be only just tight..

If others have this problem try applying a hot soldering iron tip to the screw, the heat will be localised then just to the screw thats playing the funny bugger.
