And here I'm who is the CTO of our small startup, where I'm doing 80 % of the programming (HPC C++ biological simulation), I also had to set up the CD and now I'm spinning up the Kubernetes Cluster for our simulations. I didn't know much about the CI and Kubernetes 1.5 months ago but here there are these Nana videos, so now it's almost working.

@@RatjaR501 Depends on what your goal with HPC. On CPU level try with OpenMP (or now with the standard parallel library in C++20, but I don't have experience with it). If NVIDIA GPU then CUDA, if multi computing node then OpenMPI. I personally parallelise only on CPU level with OpenMP, and for most cases, I have to run my application multiple times in an experiment so Kubernetes does the multi-node part (running multiple separate applications on different nodes)

I have done the typical DevOps work for 18 years now, long before the 'DevOps' term was invented - and I still find this job particularly difficult. AWS, K8s, Terraform, Ansible have become so complex that it's impossible to keep up to date. Even now, as I am part of a highly skilled team of engineers, I can tell you that none of us is a master in this field.
@TechWorldwithNana
@TechWorldwithNana 3 года назад
Hi Peter. Thanks for sharing your experience. 100% agree with you. I think DevOps is actually becoming more and more challenging over time, as applications get complex and new tools get added. I myself started as a software developer in the IT world and even though I love DevOps much more, I definitely think it's more difficult and challenging :)

As if "keeping it up to date" is some sort of end goal. "Keeping it up to date" is a process. So tell me about your process, and tell me about how you measure your performance with respect to that process. I have also been doing "devops" for 18 odd years ,and updates are not things you must do, but they are things you must think about, rationalize and make a decision on. For any given update I should be able to say: importantnot important, urgent no urgent, skipped for reason X , risk is Y , benefit is Z. There are of course unknown unknowns, but being able to talk about that should be the product of 18 years of experience.
@northdot9

@@TechWorldwithNana There is a danger to think a tool will fix a problem without thinking about what problem it might introduce. The vendors are bias, keep that in mind. That said some tools are hella awesome ( I'm looking at you terraform ) . But I manage my expectations with respect to Terraform. Terraform has a job, I dodn't expect it to fix something that's it's not designed for address. For example some think that terraform will somehow relieve them of the need to know the things they deploy into. Like I don't need to be an AWS expert to run a production environment in AWS if I use terraform right? wrong. You need to be an expert in AWS to be "production ready". Terraform can help you with some of the tedious pain, but for exmaple you still need to know the difference between an NACL and Security Group. Terraform can't relieve you of the requirement.

I must say you really know how to get the message across, something alot of other RU-vidrs lack. As a Data Scientist you really made me understand the DevOps realm in a single video. I think it's important you know how to use Linux and a programming language like Python. You also need to know about infrastructure as code (e.g. terraform) , cloud technology (AWS, azure etc) , CI/CD, containerisation like docker or Kubernetes. There will always be more things but I think these are the core. I didn't know all of these before I started work but I was learning them along the way; it really depends on what the company is looking for.

@davidthompson1797
@davidthompson1797 2 года назад
Because it's wrong. Basically she's representing things as they are, where "DevOps" is another word for ops. But the vision of dev-ops was integrated teams of Dev and Ops guys - an extension of the ideas of Agile (which rolled-up analysts and designers into the dev team). The idea was (and should be) to break down the silos, not create new ones. Also in her expressed vision the Dev-Ops guys are portrayed as people who aren't really Server Engineer guru's or Networking gurus, nor able to produce new quality code. So. Yeah. No.

It's interesting how DevOps has evolved. From nothing, to CI/CD, and then suddenly all the other things like Kubernetes and Terraform. Now security is part of it. It used to just be a culture and idea within a business. Another technology impossible to keep up with and know it all. I've been doing devops before it had a name or tools :P

I think this is the best explanation of Dev-Ops role. By clearly elaborating the role/tasks of developers & operations (sysadmin / sec admin / net admin) and mentioning that Dev-Ops simply bridge the gap by spanning (on a higher level) a large percentage of both roles

Thank you so much for this GREAT presentation. i am always confused about what DevOps is. I tried many times to learn it but I was confused it was part of application development or infrastructure. Interestingly, from 2008 to 2012 around 4 years of my career I was responsible for the continuous integration of the product. I used ms build to write the automation script, Install the shield application to create the package and the dev code from AccuRev (version control tool) repository. creating scripts for master data. once the build prepares it deploys on the local server. Now it looks much managed with devOps. I know how much pressure I had to run this process. It's a one-click job but I need to update the scripts every time before running it in order to include the master data of new modules.

nana you have no idea how much this video helped me. this stuff has been vague and confused me for years there so many technologies "dev gurus" been throwing around without explaining how they work! and confused me more and more. I'm a developer but I also need to wear a hat for deployment and I'm just lost until I found your channel

The boot camp says it’s assumed that we have either a software development or operations background. Where should we start if we don’t have either of those?

Great overview! I have moved on from decades of software development, and into systems architecture & engineering - overviews like this help give me the 1000 ft perspective needed for architecture & high-level design. (Though as having done DevOps before it was a "word," I will likely dive in and do some tinkering just to scratch my development itch!) ^_^
