The goal is to deliver software quickly and reliably, with a focus on automation and continuous delivery. DevOps has become a popular term in the tech industry in recent years, with many companies adopting DevOps practices to improve their software development process.
However, some people have started to question whether DevOps is still relevant in today's fast-paced software development world. This has led to the question, "Is DevOps dead?" While the answer to this question may be up for debate, it's clear that DevOps has evolved into something new: Platform engineering.
Platform engineering is the next iteration of DevOps, building on the concepts of collaboration, automation, and continuous delivery. It's about creating an internal developer platform that provides the tools and services developers need to build and deploy software quickly and reliably. This platform allows developers to focus on writing code rather than worrying about infrastructure, making it easier for them to iterate quickly and deliver software faster.
An internal developer platform is a set of tools, services, and processes that enable developers to build, test, and deploy their code quickly and efficiently. It provides a self-service model where developers can easily provision resources such as compute, storage, and networking without having to go through a central IT team. The internal developer platform is designed to be highly automated and scalable, allowing teams to focus on building and deploying their software without worrying about infrastructure.
In this video, I explore the concepts of DevOps and Platform engineering, and how the latter is the natural progression from the former. I also discuss the benefits of an internal developer platform and how it can help teams deliver software faster and more efficiently.

I manage a Platform Team for a large company. The key to success is that the developers must own and manage their own IaC for provisioning their own solutions (using the platform’s API). Relying on the Platform Team to actually build the solution and manage the IaC will create a tightly coupled dependency between teams, and just does not work. It’s a mistake for devs not to understand their apps config (relying on any another team for this). Also, ,y experience has been that it can be extremely challenging to get a group of devs to agree on tools. So exposing the platform via APIs kind of allows the devs to sort that problem out between themselves. And “you built it, you run it” is effective in ensuring high quality implementations and releases, and is very effective at managing technical debt.

@@zoltannemeth8864 well there are different usecases, at walmart there is a massive platfom team and I was part of that large scale team where you would request for cluster and infra and the ML engineers just deploy their models. Others will deploy their apps.

So basically, currently i am setting up the platform along with databases and CI CD pipelines for application delivery and the monitoring. Apart from that, I am also ensuring a proper standards of Policy as code and private cloud implications. That am i a platform+devops engineer 🤐

@@Ashborn_Dynasty well yes some will have pure devops folks in the olatfrom team while other will have programming as well for building those automation tools and gluing things together to make them available for everyone in the company

Simply put, DevOps has nothing to do with Platform Engineering, both can coexist even in the same company. But, PE tends to solve the problem of Devs dont want to do Ops and Ops people dont want to do dev.

I would disagree, if you even see the job specs they are almost the same for devops engineer and platfrom engineer. From my past experience at walmart, hp and oracle I can 100% say that platform engineering is next iteration of devops so saying that they are unrelated is wrong IMO. Would love to hear your experience on how you define it and where have you used it?

@@kubesimplify Yeah I actually agree your disagreement. PE is faster and better than DevOps, But, While both DevOps and Platform Engineering are concerned with delivering software efficiently and reliably, the main difference lies in their scope of responsibilities. DevOps is more focused on the development and delivery of software, while Platform Engineering is more focused on the underlying infrastructure and platforms that enable that development and delivery. However, both teams need to work closely together to ensure that software can be developed, deployed, and delivered in a timely and efficient manner. I don't have any professional experiences but I wish to be a Platform Engineer one day, I learnt all of it from all the amazing blogs and videos from Humanitec.

@@VrashabhSontakke that is what I have explained in my video, if you watch till the end its been explained. Also its not something new its just been pushed very hard these days. Like 2017-18 also had platforms very well built for teams
