In some ways, Elidibus's story hit me harder than Emet-Selch's. All this time, Elidibus presented himself as the cold calculator. Always unflappable. But the truth was that we was a young child who wanted to see his friends again so badly, especially Azem, the true "Warrior of Light'. He promised his hero that he would fulfill his duty to the end, to the point that he gave up his individuality to become Zodiark, and recreated himself from him to help his people further. Lahabrea is gone, and Emet-Selch, too. Elidibus knows that he probably can't beat the WoL but tries his best anyways, because that is his duty. At the end, Elidibus sits crying that he failed, that he couldn't restore his people, that he couldn't be with Azem one last time, completely unaware that he is standing right before him. Credits to the writing team for making a previously flat character that was Elidibus into a tear-choker. Also credits to his voice actor who went from deadpan to overflowing with sorrow and hesitation. What an incredible performance, especially with the voice breaking at times. I truly look forward to what FFXIV has in store for the future.

I don't think Elidibus knew who Azem was, the people he was talking about are likely Lahabrea and igeyorhm, given they seemed almost like parental figures to him in the flashbacks. He even says he sees our soul but he does not recognise it, whereas Emet Selch and Hythlodaeus both recognised it.
@crazy13alex

@@anonymousxaela761 He was indeed talking about Azem. Y'shtola came to the same conclusion that Hythlodeus confirmed right after. They said Elidibus had been losing his memories as an Amaurotine since he became a primal. Separating himself from Zodiark, a lot of his memories from before that summoning were distorted by his singular mission, with the vast masses of Amaurot fueling it. He had set the ideal hero/Warrior of Light for the shards based on Azem, who inspired him. Even possessed the first Warrior of Light, fashioning himself as his inspiration. Elidibus knew Azem, and remembered his promise to him/her, but he had forgotten about Azem himself/herself.

"he gave up his individuality to become Zodiark". I really like this wording because it reinforces the parallel of Elibidus and Graha. Both had to sacrifice their individuality to become the embodiment of their respective world's hopes and dreams. The "self" that existed before their mission began is dead, and they only continued to live for nothing more than the will of the people. Graha was on the same path as Elibidus, only Elibidus was further along that path, to the point of forgetting the very nature of his mission. I love that Graha lived, and I love that unlike Emet, Elibidus does not compromise, to the very end, very emotional and super cathartic for very different reasons. Amazing characters.

Do I get what they're doing/why they do it and like their writing? YES, it's amazing they make me care for people who have done such incredibly evil things. Does that make them good people tho? I *love* how angry he is at us for killing his comrades, how in 5.3 he brings up Lahabrea and Emet-Selch multiple times and how we "murdered" them. That final line just breaks me. *Breaks me,* just like Emet-Selch's. I don't feel bad for defeating them and bringing their dream down...Because it's a hollow one. They can Rejoin all of the worlds and rebuild their lost homeland, but the people who sacrificed their lives, their souls to create Hydaelyn and Zodiark are gone forever. Once a soul is fully absorbed into the Lifestream, the person ceases to be...Permanently. And, for these Ascians...They continually talk about how we are failures and how we are disappointments, but...They take what is best in us and twist it to their own ends. They judge us inferior because they can find the worst in us and exploit it. But do they ever really try to raise us up? To make us into their true heirs? No. Instead they refuse to see us even as being alive. To them, we are tools and animals to sacrifice for their own purposes. They judged us inferior from the very first...Only the ones who brought forth Hydaelyn saw us as worthy of protection and nurturing, of being their heirs. I feel sorrow and sympathy for the Convocation, for Emet-Selch and Elidibus especially, because they only wished to save their people and world...But I cannot condone what they have done. They set the game against us from the beginning and refused to give us a real chance to prove ourselves. They claim we have forgotten our history...But the Calamities they caused are the reason why no evidence of the world-that-was exists on the Source. Every time the people of the world as it is now even begin to approach a level where they *could* understand what came before, the Ascians made sure that their rise was tainted with the worst elements and ensured they would be destroyed to usher in a Rejoining. It's far too easy for them to sit in judgement of us when they are architects of all that which they judge us for. It is much harder to nurture the best in someone because it means you must persevere through the disappointments. They were so focused on their unattainable dream that they refused to see the one that could be achieved...And, of course, they could never have been convinced anyway. Zodiark has already tempered them, every one. Even if they COULD see us as their heirs...They will never act in our best interests because they cannot. Our best interests...Conflict with their god's. This story has gone so many places and been so amazing in its telling, especially of late. But...Now I worry for the future. The last of the Unsundered is lost...And those left in his wake are not bound by anything so sympathetic or just as duty to the lost or memories of better times. They crave only devastation and chaos, a return of their dark god...And now nothing will prevent them from sowing that chaos except for us. And we do not know where they are, where they will come from, or even who they will look like when they do.

I have hope for the seemingly psychotic ascian if only because Hades seemed like a shallow 'joker" character as well, until his real nature was revealed towards the end. The real threat however ultimately has to be "The Sound", that which threatened the world of old and necessitated the summoning of Zodiark in the first place. It's happening on the source too now. Lahabrea suggests as such when confronted after beating the ultimate weapon. Though it was a line that meant nothing to us at the time.
@SarzaelX
@SarzaelX 3 года назад
The Ascians that sacrificed himself did not return to the Lifestream (Which was potentially created by Hydaelyn as Emet-Selch implies that Ascians were exempt from the cycle of reincarnation). They became part of Zodiark, just like Elidibus did. If Elidibus was able to return, then the others could too if Zodiark had a replacement for their aether. The Ascians know best how this works given they literally summoned him, so it's a bit nonsense to believe they spent thousands of years trying something impossible.

And yet we'll keep moving forward. Because regardless of how many hardships, however many losses, and however many times we question ourselves why we keep up this fight, we will. Because while fate can be cruel, a Smile suits a Hero, and even when we're long, long gone, we'll still be a hero, because we'll have inspired so many others to take up the cause, to do what must be done, to make sure, that one day... they'll be the ones to fight for those *they* have lost, and for those *they* can yet save.
@Darkmage1293
@Darkmage1293 3 года назад
...I could only ever grit my teeth at Elidibus. I wanted so...desperately to finally find a compromise. But the Ascians...just can't accept us. They cannot. They have so much lost of their own...and we are hollow imitations of what they were; and to see Emet Selch make pale echoes of the Ascians... This was never a fight between light and dark. This was a fight between saving those lost or protecting those who remain.

Those lost cant truly be saved. A common theme in this game is people consumed by the past. Nidhogg consumed by a wrong long in the past. Gaius trying to resurrect a long dead invasion, the ascians trying to reclaim a past that is far out of reach. The villians of these games are always in someway fixed on the past, unable to truly see a future. They can only move backwards not forwards.

If I had to guess what Elidibus' true name was prior to being granted an official title, I would wager it being Ophiucus, the healer. The Ophiucus constellation on his constellation crystal literally carries the snake, Serpens, which is the constellation that represents Zodiark in the Ivalice games. He's also an optional superboss, akin to Emet-Selch's Hades from FFIX. A healer carrying the burden of Zodiark, yeah that's what he was made to be.

FUUUU elidibus hit me harder. I bemoaned through three expansions "What the heck ever happened to Elidibus? We've not heard from him, only hints for so long" and then this. I was so confused. so ANGRY that the emissary would be TWISTED like this. And then his words. his confession. His view painted him as the hero of the story.... and I understood. I finally GOT IT. and it still brings tears because were the roles reversed, would I have done any different? I don't know.

I see a lot of people saying there are no villians here or that the two sides are the same but I have to disagree. There is always one aspect that separates the villians in these games from the heroes. The heroes are always looking to possibilities in the future. They're always moving forward. The villains are fixated on the past. Nidhogg desired revenge for a past wrong and it consumed him and nearly all of ishgard as well. Solus wanted to recreate a stronger better humanity from the past. Yotsuyu was wronged by her home and spent her life unable to ever truly let go of the hate of that past. And of course the Ascians. The Ascians who desperately want to reclaim a past that is in all likelyhood beyond their reach. Dont forget the past, but be sure to always move forward.

Well, Elidibus was still considered an Amaurotine by Lahabrea and Emet-Selch even as a primal. And he was, but you're right; because of what he became, the desires and directives of both Zodiark and his people hardwired into him had made him lose his grip on what was still there and what was lost. Yes, they are both based on the original WoL from the first FF. It also seems that it was Azem's original form (?), as Elidibus thinks of that image as his inspiration. This is also a direct mirror to Gra'ha Tia, who saw our WoL as his inspiration.

Dissidia takes place in a realm between the games and greater forces pluck the characters from very specific parts of their development when they will be most facilitative to the fights that need to be fought, explaining why some of them only have memories up to a certain point in their story. The Dissidia WoL *could* be Azem but the connection between the shards of FFXIV and the actual FF worlds that came before it is vague, with noticeable differences between the shards inspired by a FF game and the actual game's world. But it is certainly possible.

They fill the people's heads with admiration at the warrior of light's grandeur and summon the power of their belief, connected to the very root of belief in heroes that vanquish darkness, into a manifestation upon themselves in order to defeat you, not allowing themselves to admit that a reincarnation of the very person they wished to be was right there before them trying to stop them.

Only now.. after all this time I realize that Elidibus actually does not have a beard. Ardbert in his body always had a little beard but Elidibus doesnt.

It hits hard when you read more on his backstory and realize he's basically like Alphinaud. An extraordinarily talented youth who feels he needs to take up most of the world's burdens and who looked up to Azem as almost an older sibling

So.... We kill our friends, who sacrificed so much to save our original world. We return to them this way after leaving Amarot because we didn't agree on how to save the world and went to look for another way... But got caught up in the sundering and become Hydelyn's servant... We didn't agree with that side either so... Why the hell am I killing my friends SE?! Why didn't I have more options to show I'm Azem?! Why can't I help my fucking friends instead of killing them SE?! *Sobs*
