I knew Tom Hudner. I was his Navy liaison during the Korean War Memorial dedication in the mid-1990s, and accompanied him to the dedication and Congressional reception. I asked him what drove him to risk his life in this say. He said simply, "Jesse was my friend." Wish he (and Jesse) were around to see this. Looks like a great movie.

This is so emotional for me because so many wars are never fought by the powerful who instigate it, but by our brave soldiers. My father was a paratrooper in the Korean war. Rarely was I able to catch a glimpse behind his mask of strength, that stoic demeanor, but I did once or twice. The hell our soldiers endure is beyond comprehension. My amazing father passed away on June 6th last year. He received a veteran's burial and is surrounded by his brothers now. I am so honored to be his daughter.

A film about the Korean War is probably overdue, but sadly this type of thing will never show the reality of what the US airforce did, instead we’ll get top gun heroics. The US airforce dropped over half a million tons of explosive and napalm on North Korean towns cities and villages. Curtis Le May, head of Strategic Air Command said that the US bombing campaign killed about 20% of the population - around 2 million people and burned down every town in North Korea. They did it with next to no concern for civilian casualties.

@@jonathanshone5517 my parents are Korean with my grandparents from both North and South Korea. Trust me, NK and the Communists were just as brutal as the Capitalists. It's just about who was more honest about the aftermath, NK would never take that kind of accountability in the first place. Not many South Koreans care much about that 20% fact because without America, 100% of us wouldn't even potentially exist. Even worse, we might have grown up in a hellhole like NK. Many of us (South Koreans) would have gotten executed had the NK reached the tip of the penninsula which was the course for both sides against the other, especially when the frontlines started shifting everyday.

My grandfather was 16 year old during the Korean War. He got caught by the North Koreans and dragged to be forced into their army until he escaped dead in the night. Sweet man! I had a similar story. My father was born in Romania in October 1944 right when the Soviet Union was invading. My grandparents and one aunt and two uncles all died. My dad was smuggled by a life long friend of my grandparents. They were from Northern Italy but lived in Hungary about 2 miles from the border of Romania. They went from Northern Romania all the way to western Germany, evading the Soviets and the fleeing Germans the whole way. The way the story was told to me from my adoptive grandfather this subject should have been made into a movie. The Soviets were brutal, killing anything and anyone. My two uncles and aunt were all children under 10 years old when they were executed by the Soviets. The only reason my dad survived was because the people that executed the rest of the family couldn't shoot a newborn for some reason, so my dad was left in the house alive, to die of the elements. LUCKILY my adoptive grandparents heard the news that the Soviets have reached Oradea. My real grandparents elected to stay in their home thinking the Soviets (who had just reached eastern Romania a couple months prior to reaching western Romania) would spare families, even though they have heard things for the past couple months. That's what made my adoptive grandfather and my three adoptive great uncles hike the 20 or so KM to their home to get them out. They arrived to find my grandpa, grandma and my uncles and aunt murdered but there sat my dad in his bassinet. He was weak and not crying. For some reason the Soviets halted their advance when reaching Hungary, which gave my adoptive grandpa and great uncles to take my dad across the Hungarian border. The went south to Yugoslavia and through northern Italy to get all of their documents before paying a British military transport plane to get them to England. From there they were processed and sent to the USA as refugees and became a Doctor and three Pharmacists in Norcal! The thing that they thought was amusing is that most of the Soviet troops they met had no idea how they could turn on a faucet and get running water to come out of it. The Soviet conscripts thought it was magic... Weird eh?

As an aviation buff and someone who loves wholesome and uplifting stories, I absolutely loved it. The reviewers calling this a medicore film are getting it wrong: They think this is a war movie, and complain that it's slow and takes forever to get to the war. It's not a war movie; it's a movie about friendship set against the backdrop of preparing for and then going to the Korean War. If you go in expecting a war movie, you'll be disappointed. If you love fantastic film of some of the most beautiful aircraft ever built, the opening sequence is worth the price of admission, and the central story about the friendship and Devotion that Brown and Hudner shared is beautiful and as good as anything else I've seen this year.

The movie deals with racism that existed in the Navy in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, but it’s not heavy handed and the vast majority of the men who work with Jesse Brown (the black navy pilot) treat him like any other flyer. The references to racism in the film are almost entirely bad experiences getting through qualifying trials that Ensign Brown recounts to Lt. Hudner. The movie doesn’t blame Hudner or Lt. Commander Cevoli (who are both shown to be incredibly decent and honorable men) for the racist actions of others, or attempt to broadly paint them with a racist brush just because they are white.

You still have to admit, the trailer is deceiving of what the movie is really all about if you are a fan of aviation but don't necessarily know the story. The movie wasn't advertised accurately. If I see 90% of the trailer showing air combat, I will expect the movie to be about air combat and not 5% combat and 95% about what you described.

My grandfather was a very seasoned officer in the French Army (shock troops). He fought all battles of WW2, went to Indochina and took part in the most violent clashes during the war in Algeria. Back in 1951, he was still fighting in Indochina, in North Tonkin along the Chinese border on both RC4 and 6 routes. He was willing to go join the French Battalion (about 2000 men at any given time) who valiantly fought the North Korean and Chinese under the command of US General Ridgway and more directly General Monclar (who voluntarily asked to be demoted to the rank of LCL in order to be able to serve for France under a US colonel). My grandfather eventually couldn't make it as France assessed that it was more important for her elite troops to continue the fight in Indochina. The rest is history...

When the Chinese struck on November 27, they surround both 1st Marine Division and the Army's 7th division around the Chosin reservoir. They quickly realized that they had to withdraw. And the only way out, was through the Toktong pass, held by the 218 men of Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines. And those Marines held that position for 5 freezing days and nights against a force of about 4000 Chinese soldiers that were determined to throw them of the hill.

I think the biggest reason for that is the war happened between WWII and The Vietnam War. The Korean War only lasted 3 years and didn’t get much attention from American citizens since there wasn’t much coverage being done on that war. The Vietnam War lasted from 1955-1975 for America and was a very controversial war since there were many Americans believing that there was no reason for us to be in that war in first place. American men burning were their draft cards, sneaking into Canada or Mexico to avoid being drafted during this time and very little men volunteered to join the military during that time. I’ve also always thought it was sad that we went into detail about the other wars but the Korean War barely gets a paragraph. I ended up doing a ten paged research paper on it for history class when we had to pick a war to write about and present it in class. The Korean War is “taught” in American school and I use the word taught very loosely. The war is usually lumped in with the WWII section at the very end the section and it’s given a paragraph just so schools can say that it was covered. The paragraph would consist of: The Korean War (also known as The Forgotten War) lasted 1950-1953. The war was between North and South Korea over the 38th parallel after the North invaded South Korea and there was no winner of the war, the two countries now live in a cease fire agreement. North Korea was lead by dictator Kim Il Sung and his descendants continue rule the country. Maybe if The Korean War was fought at a different time that wasn’t close to either WWII or The Vietnam War it may have been remembered more in American and taught better. Even up to the few years ago the only time Korea was really ever mentioned outside of history class was when North Korea would do something, I’ve had friend say that they forget that Korea even exist till there is news coverage over North Korea. Now a days South Korea has become a very popular tourists and entertainment attraction for many people, so it is working its way into becoming well known and renewing interests within America.

This movie had 10 mins of flying and 1hr 50 mins of mind numbing dialogue and oh yes I think it was shot in the dark with a torch.

It’s about time they made a movie about the heroes of Chosin Reservoir. True story of sacrifice and triumph. The Marines and Navy’s finest hour! To those who fought and died in the Korean War God bless and Semper Fi.

I remember visiting the Korean War museum in uniform. (In Korea) This elderly Korean man walked up and hugged me crying and saying thank you. I was so shocked. It was the 60th year anniversary of the war. This is evidently not uncommon.

My one uncle served as a paratrooper in WWII. Another uncle served in the Airforce during WWII as a staff sergeant at a radar station. Another uncle was a tail gunner on an A-26 invader during the Korean war. Another uncle served on an aircraft carrier on the flight deck in Vietnam making it to Boatswain's Mate. I had two aunts who also served. One in the WAC's and the other in the WAVES. I am proud of all of them and I am glad that even after all this time we can learn about untold stories of people who lived through it all and gave their all in service of their country. I just saw the film and found it to be incredible. If you enjoy the film or have read the book? I encourage you to read the other works of Adam Makos. He's an author from my area and I loved his books A Higher Call and Spearhead. These stories that come to light raise awareness and draw attention to sacrifices made by all in serving our country. And it's my hope that through Jesse Brown's memory we can focus on what unites us. Definitely looking to pick this film up when it comes out on video.
