The Devry 2810 XD IMHO is one of the Finest 35mm portables ever made. Basically a revised version of the 12000 series Theatrical Projector. Devry Engineers were innovative back in the day. While other mainstream Projector Mfgers were basically adding a Bulky soundhead to an already Silent designed Projector Head. Devry designed an integrated projector/sound all in one case; much like all your 16mm AV projectors. This not only made it more compact but the use of a chain Drive verses Gears in other types of 35mm projectors made it a quieter running Projector also. This Model was actually developed for the Navy/Military, so like the Military Jan 16mm projectors it had to be made to stand up to diverse conditions. If you noticed the film being projected it had a rock steady image which is accomplished by the Geneva Maltese Cross type intermittent system that is used by almost all 35mm Projectors. This Projector is probably approaching 60 yrs old and I would bet its intermittent is still the OEM installed back when it was Mfgered. They are rugged and a real Workhorse Projector. Still many of them survive today. There are usually one or two on EBAY for Sale most of the Time...Great Machine...s.m.
I'm amazed how quiet the mech was BEFORE you isolated the audio. Some of the more modern machines clatter and bang like mad. This one's so quiet I wondered if it was actually 16mm before you got in closer! Great stuff.
Can the chains that drive it be replaced with belts? I saw pictures of a rebuilt one that appears to not have the chains but some type of flexible belts. ?
Back in the '80s a film collector friend of mine offered to sell me one of these for $500. I turned him down b/c I was getting into Home Video. I was an idiot.
Check Ebay, it's amazing what you will find. Some in better shape than others. We run this one at least twice a week. Paid under $600 for it, we had to pick it up due to its size, that was basically another $500 for we took our time.
Yes it is. I collect old theater ads and snack bar ads. I've sold all the 35mm films but have put some 16mm versions on my channel, will be adding more as I get time.
