This is my review and demo of Dewalt's smallest battery powered chainsaw (12in). I'm reviewing it mostly from the perspective of "clearing trails", so dealing with downed trees across the path and that type of stuff. I compare it to a couple gas powered chainsaws from Echo that are in the same price range and I give my final recommendation for this saw at the end. I also include a couple other tools I bring with me that make trail clearing much faster and more efficient. Thanks for watching!

Just picked this saw up, totally fits in with the gas saws. The absolute convenience of it is fantastic so far I can’t be more pleased. I have been clearing all kinds of brush and just can’t believe how much it cut on a 3amp/hr battery. Plus I don’t have to scare the horses with a gas saw if I don’t need to.

the pick ax is being used for its purpose. I was around sawmill growing up and saw it being used to move logs around.

All of my cordless tools are dewalt but I did not like their chainsaws, the oil leakage was a deal breaker. I ended up going with a Makita xcu08 and couldn't be happier. It is a true top handle saw and performs just as good as any gas top handle saw. It has a high chain speed so you get smooth fast cuts.

Mine has not leaked bar oil, but I read somewhere to store with the bar oil cap (left side of chainsaw) down for this model and it works for me. Great saw, good tip to put 14 inch Oregon bar and chain.

I'm curious what issues you have had with using the saw in the rain? I have the same saw for trail maintenance and have used it in rain, snow, etc without issue.

I'm not saying a single raindrop will cause it to explode, I'm just saying with any type of battery electric tools you have to be aware of the elements.

We use 12" (converted to 14") and 16" Dewalt cordless saws for my fire department. We have used them in all elements - rain, snow, fog - with no issues. We do make sure to bring them back to station and remove batteries after use in wet weather.

put a 3/4" o-ring underneath the slot, not in the slot. That seemed to work for me. The 3/4" wouldn't let me close it with the o-ring in the slot, so I tried putting it just below, and no leaks, yet.

I converted mine to run a stihl 14" bar with 1/4" picco micro chain (what stihl uses for their homeowner battery saws) It's a completely different saw! no more chatter from low chain speed with larger cutting capacity, also took a flap wheel to the plastic dog teeth and added a small steel dog set that mounts using the factory body screws (with some customization lol) The only drawback to the Stihl mod is that you have to make the 14" stihl chains a link and cutter longer (easy if you have a chain breaker and spinner) or get a shop to do it from bulk chain... If anybody needs part numbers let me know, you have to use a Stihl sprocket but it bolts right on, it takes minimal time to swap back and forth between bar/chain types if needed, but I've made enough Stihl chains to NEVER have to swap back in a pinch lol! The sprocket was like $14 from the dealer, and the steel dog was similar (honestly that's a way more time intensive mod, and it doesn't make a HUGE difference unless you are still using the factory 3/8lp chain and relying on slow chain speed and torque to force a cut with the 12" or oregon 14" bar...

@@Gais87 same sprocket diameter, but a different tooth count, very simple to swap back and forth, just be aware you will have to run custom length chains, adding one more cutter to a 14" factory stihl chain has been the perfect length for me, I just saw this comment but the stihl part is for a 1/4" picco *7 tooth sprocket for the MSA 160 chainsaw, best part I could find is #1250 642 1200... I actually lost the original part receipt I had and just looked it up but I'll take my cover off and double check and update this if I'm wrong lol, oh and while every stihl dealer seems to have the 1/4" picco-micro-chain 12"or 14" bars and chains in stock (there is only one option for both in the 1/4" picco micro cutter size) many don't seem to be able to get the chain ties for lengthening the chain, however you can find them on eBay or entire packs of off-brand ties which I've also used without problems 👍(BTW I pulled my sprocket off, one REVERSE THREADED sprocket bolt, followed by 6 t-20 screws and my sprocket is only marked 1250 /00A then 1/4" P on the opposite side 🙄) from my Google searching that part number I gave you (now updated for the 7 tooth sprocket) seems to be a European number or something although the part matches (its the classic stepped dish looking sprocket with holes drilled around the perimeter) But I can still ask my stihl dealer for the part number next time I get by there if it happens to be different for the USA... Putting the actual part number on the part instead of a random code is just not a thing Stihl likes to do 🤦‍♂️How very German of them 😂 (now updated)

O rings are not supposed to fit tight. Try one that's a little loose. It needs to be able to expand to seal well.

It's too bad those DeWalt saws come with a semi chisel safety chain, I recently did a comparison video and I will say that if the DeWalt had a full chisel chain the cutting speed would be pretty close to a 30cc gas saw.

what was that one called again? Hooker roon? If you can provide an Amazon link for that too, it would be great. As for the oil spill problem, what other Dewalt battery saws don't have it?

Oh my, sorry for the late reply. It's called a "Hookaroon". The one I bought is made by Fiskars. Just google "Fiskars Hookaroon" and you'll see there multiple offerings in different sizes. Regarding the saw leakage issue - I think their newer, larger saws do not have the issue (but i'm not 100% certain)

I've never heard of it referred to as a hookaroon before. Most people will call it a "pickaroon". But maybe the name used depends on where you live.

Do you have a number for the 16” bar and chain that would fit the dewalt 12” saw, also I plan on using the flexvolt 9 ah battery longer life

I found out that below 30 degrees will kill the big 9ah battery in minutes; without even using it.

Garbage, it was great while it worked but then it stopped. To fix it you have to replace a 50 cent part, but you have to take the saw completely apart, completely apart! You'd think since that part is the most likely one to stop working they would have made a easy way to get to it.

Good luck that thing leaks like a siv oil will leak out all over it’s a cheap pos people buy a stihl ms 251 it will last forever or even a ms 170 will last longer then that Dewalt toy I’m a logger I know saws I use them every day that dewalt is trash.

Very informative video, my friend! I used my dewalt chainsaw all spring long while working through some trails. Granted I never had or would have to cut anything over a few inches in diameter. I agree that if you have actual trees in your life you need to deal with, gas is always going to be better. Awesome video! Cheers from Alaska!

I think you're worried a little too much about the elements. Extreme cold and heat will affect the performance of the saw for sure, but a bit of rain or snow won't matter at all. I agree that for most people, this probably wouldn't be the best choice as a ONLY saw, but for trail clearing, or an overnight camping trip, it's pretty much ideal. Just got to get a big enough battery.

I tried the o-ring fix but it didn’t work the o-ring is too thick. I used the Danco #11 like other people have suggested but the cap wouldn’t sit flush and tighten down

I've noticed that with the O-ring on there, it helps to keep some of the oil from spilling out, but it is a major pain in the rear end getting the cap back on. They ought to address this on their next small saw.

The chainsaw has a seal. It’s not on the cap. It’s seated between the frame and oil tube. Take a flashlight and you will see. Are you positive it’s the cap. There are other know locations that leak

I have the same saw it also leaks only way to solve the leakage problem is to store it with the oil fill right side up

I agree - I literally wrote "THIS SIDE UP" on my soft-sided saw bag I use to carry this one. I hope they fix the issue for future saws.

Hi, I have this saw. Opened its up yesterday… removed all the oil line and put gasket silicone around the oil tank. I soon found out that the oil is leaking from the exit hole where it feeds the blade. Even when standing on flat base it still leaks. Wish I know this flaw before hand

Just bought this for home use and its fantastic. I hate 2 cycle engines with a passion, and this little Dewalt is perfect for my small lot out in the country. I use it for large branches, fallen trees, to trim trees, etc. It does leak a little but I just store mine on its side, or on a paint roller tray on a shelf its fine. I am looking to upgrade to a 14" at some point but for now I'm very happy with my purchase.

Very nice. I'm still liking mine for it's intended usage. Just the other day I only had to make 2 quick cuts on an 8x8 chunk of wood. I grabbed this and it took 2 min. Didn't have to fire up the gas saw. Cheers!

The 12-inch bar is useless, I put a 16-inch Oregon bar on and it's a great saw. A 5 AMP HOUR hour battery uses a full tank of bar oil. I use 30 weight motor oil, the thin oil lubricates the bar nicely. The DeWalt leaks the same amount of oil as my Husqvarna 51. Big advantage to the 16-inch bar is there's more teeth on it so stays sharper longer.

the "leak" on the bar side is how many small electric saws lubricate the chain. they dont lubricate well through the bar port, but rather use gravity to flow the oil down to the chain. so they will always leave a puddle if the bar oil reservoir is full.

Both saws would likely do just fine, but I would recommend getting the stihl.

If i had to pick between the two for my only saw, I'd go with the 170 - it's more robust for more frequent use (I'm talkling years of trimming and cutting small logs), plus it's a more capable saw. That said, this Dewalt is great for beginners and will cut small branches and small logs all day long. If you're truly a beginner, I think you'd be happy with the Dewalt, especially if you already have their batteries.

I do appreciate most of the video. The comparisons to a gas powered are pointless though. Everybody knows gas is going to be better and more efficient. The people who use electric are typically homeowners clearing some brush during spring/fall cleaning or people who just can't pull a cord on an electric anymore. But when you focus exclusively on the goods and bads of the E-saw, it is a very helpful video.

@1kevinjay hey thank you for the comment, but the comparison is not pointless. Some people are buying a chainsaw for the first time and these two saws are somewhat similar in cost. If this helps them make a decision for themselves then it's not a waste. Also, it isn't just homeowners with weak wrists buying electric chainsaws of this size, people who work in the Forest fire fighting industry sometimes have no choice but to use electric saws because of the risk of fire from a gas saw. There are way more use cases out there than what you briefly mentioned.

Are you sure the oil leak is coming from the o ring and cap? More likely it’s coming from the oil tank or hoses which is why it leaks regardless of the orientation.

@@markw1123 after some more research, it's probably not the o ring. Likely the tank as you mentioned. That said, when I put an o-ring on it helped quite a bit, so there's something to be said there. I'd be curious if they're larger, more powerful saw as any leaking issues.

20v battery isn't a marketing scheme that is what it is actually 20.6 volts and depending on what tool you use the voltage can drop to 15v on average 16.8 volts so why don't we call it 16.8 volts

i have been using a couple of them for my orchard. i have 14" oregon bar and chain on one i use double handed. i use the original one handed. i have used the hell out of them and love them very much. i use them for pruning, cutting branches for my rocket stove, log furniture, and trellis work. the oil leak is relatively easy to fix and has nothing to do with the o ring you talk about. it is leaking inside the case and you have to clean and seal it up and it will work for you for years with no leaks. mine leaks less than my gas huskie.

Great video . I think you help made up my mind on what saw to get the 20v DCCS620 because the 8.8 lb easy to move around and I am old so when the battery is done so will I be done we will make a good team lol my son got the milwaukee 2727-20 it a great saw but it 15 lb I think with battery not shore about the weight but a lot heavier to know in my time I use a lot of chainsaw one time the bigger the better but that changed know smaller for me I love all chainsaw because when I was younger I bilt a 40' x 16" long liner fishing boat with a chainsaw an a axe squared all the trees with the chainsaw in the woods so I could make them light enouf to bring them home on a skidoo and slay every every Pease of timber and beam was cut squared in woods even most of the planks I fish that boat of shore over 100 mils that boat is still in the fishery today bilt with a chain saw the hardest Pease to get was the stem and the keel it was done just my brother an me back in the Earley 1980 l had not much money but I had a enough to get a chainsaw it was a Mcculloch Pro Mac 10 10 that put me on my feat love chainsaw thanks for the nice video staysafe

I’ve got a dewault. Did a 16 oregan bar swap on it. For small stuff and clearing land and smaller limbing. It’s the best chainsaw I’ve ever owned. Recommend to everyone. Gas saw is gonna be more powerful can cut longer yada yada. Electric I don’t have to ever try and start or warm up. Just grab a battery and make sure it has bar oil and that’s it.

I bought a black and decker 12” two years ago. I love it. It’s convenient and I cut wood and listen to the radio at the same time. Electric/ Battery saws are awesome

Nice vijeo with proper technical info on the important thinx! I haven't seen anybody else except the mighty AvE moan about the single stud holding the bar which is an important shortcoming of this saw. Good job!

Battery chainsaws are meant for trimming. I only use a battery saw for climbing up into a tree in case I have to throw it. 😂

What is sad is they continue to sell these units knowing they are flawed. They're just blowing them out on sales rather than discontinuing and fixing in an updated model.

Yeah, it might be worth skipping this saw and getting a different Dewalt saw. That said, this thing does perform really well for small tasks. I find myself reaching for it over a gas saw for smaller projects despite the oil leak.

@@ThomperBeThompin I run Dewalt as my secondary platform. I couldn't justify spending $350 on a Makita for the amount of use it will get. The Dewalt is currently on sale for $175 at the depot. I couldn't pass it up.

As a rule of thumb, the bigger the chainsaw from all these electric brands, the better quality build it is with better components. Dewalt just came out with a 20-in saw thats actually got a lot of nice high quality features. But it is very expensive
