One tip for you, after you've cleaned out and busted up the mud and grease in these fittings take a can of brake clean with the provided long nozzle, and give each hole a shot. This will blast away a lot more and dry off in a matter of a few seconds.
I like the way you think. But one concern. Maybe throw a rag over it? So it does not shoot back and get you square in the eyes three stooges style. LOL Thanks for watching!
I suggest cleaning the fittings as you did, then use a can of compressed air to blow-out the recesses, IF you do not have access to compressor. I also suggest cleaning one fitting, greasing it and then move on to the next. That way you tell for sure any that you may have missed. John, I have the same gun and tip. My two negatives about the DeWalt and other similar brands is the lack of that "feel" of the grease going into the joints. The other is the amount of grease I use-up. The grease suppliers must love them! And, what is the story behind that collapsed empty cartridge you removed?
Yes i wish Dewalt would have a method to indicate how much grease is left in the tube, that would be wonderful. That and a 3-4 pump burst mode like the milwalkee. I periodically give the trigger a quick press and see if grease comes out the nozzle. Thanks for watching!
Can't you see how much grease is left by pulling the guiding rod like any regular grease gun? If you can't pull it out, it's empty. If you can pull it out let's say 3 inches then it means you have 3 inches of grease left in the tube no?
Does the factory coupler and hose look like the ones i have in the video? Do they both have wrenching flats on them? If it does use properly sized wrenches to loosen the joint. Or have a vise hold one side while you wrench off the other. Apply some heat with a heat gun just incase the factory coupler you have was installed with loctite Its very possible Dewalt could of made a design and/or production changes at some point and used a crimped on hose to coupler connection. John Franco I was using the proper wrenches but they weren't bugging. I was using so much force on it that the wrenches ended up slipping off and I racked my knuckles. I'm thinking you might be right about that Loctite. Sadly I do not have a heat gun available.
Good video... Greasing starts at time 5:13. Recommend you find a way to cover the fitting access areas you just cleaned once you're done with the greasing operation. Even if you have to use duct tape, it seems that covers would save you a lot of cleaning time whenever your machines are due to be greased. Also, an Amazon search for "grease fitting covers" offers ideas for protecting the fittings from the elements in case that is worth considering. John, does any oil from the grease leak out from the end of the gun where the handle pulls back. All my standard guns leak the oil that separates from the grease, I also live in Florida which is very hot if that plays a role. There is a new gun from Germany that has screw on tubes that can't leak, I am thinking of getting one of them, no mess at all. I really did want the power one but don't want to deal with a mess if they leak also.
Before investing in this grease gun, learn the basics about grease and lubrication; inject enough grease to overflow, so you get rid of old grease and wear particles. Grease is cheaper than new bearings!
So if you really want to flush out particles then you must be letting grease run out on to the ground then? You must be going through grease like crazy. And what about the wear particles embedded in the bronze/brass bushing? Its just the nature of the heavy equipment my friend. You are going to have to replace bushings no matter what. I think that was me fidgeting with it off camera, i pulled it back and reinserted it a few times because i didnt get it to hook on the end on the first shot. I will keep an eye out next time i refill.
O.K. then the question is answered. I asked because I was looking for folks who have these grease guns as I am in the market for a powered gun. I'm trying to decide between air powered and battery and weighing the pros and cons of both. Thanks for the reply.
i would highly recommend getting a battery powered gun it allows you to go absolutely anywhere with it. If you are worried about weight the dewalt does come with a very nice sling, but its not that heavy since it uses a very lightweight lithium ion battery. Not sure what Milwaukee offers with theirs. Air powered guns are great for lower volume grease work and if you only need it with in the confines of a garage/shop. ChuckE2009 just did a review of an air powered gun for his shop, check it out.
I saw ChuckE2009's yesterday too,..that's what reminded me that I need a gun. Yes, my requirements are only in and around my shop, ad the cost factor and frequency of using a gun have to be considered , don't they? ( Also I don't own any DeWalt tools, all mine are Makita, at least none that I can find) I wish they did!
