At last we've conquered (or at least mostly) the Dewalt DWS779 and DWS780 double bevel compound sliding miter saw dust collection. Many have tried but I really do think this is the best balance of improvement and maintaining full functionality. If you're looking for ways to control the dust in your shop or job site - I think you'll like it!

Hey Travis, I’ve been a silent bystander to your videos, but a long time subscriber. The way you explain things is more than excellent for hobbyist woodworkers/shop nation folks like me. I remember one of your early videos about the WEN air filter. It was early on, but it made me feel like a human being, if that makes sense. The way you’re so honest and transparent about your content is so refreshing. You’re videos are some serious motivation to me and my shop, and I will always support your 3D printed doo dads and gizmos that makes our lives easier. Thanks Travis, keep in keeping on!

OK so I rarely if ever comment or come back to a site to leave a review but the dust collection device Shop Nation came up with has left me no choice but to leave this review. My Dewalt DW780 with the factory designed dust collection device might just as well of not had any dust collection device at all. After cutting any amount of wood, even a single 2x4 resulted in a pile of dust on the machine, the floor, on me and everywhere else it wanted to go. I had wood dust stuck to the wall behind my saw and caused me to do vacuuming and clean up every time I used my saw. I watched this video and thought it was worth a try as Travis seemed to have put a lot of work into his design. I purchased the device from Shop Nation and from the unpackaging to install was nothing but extremely impressed. The quality of the 3D print is excellent. The mount up to my saw was spot on. I hooked it up to my dust collection system via a 4" to 2.5" reducer and I purchased the appropriate accessory's from Shop Nation. I am so happy with this device! Works amazing!

Update to previous comments. After using this device for a few months, I am reporting that it has become a game changer for dust collection on my DW780. I do get a small amount of dust but it is absolutely no comparison to the disaster I used to have. Additionally, I had an issue with a small chunk of the plastic crack off where the rubber shoot attaches to the plastic. I sent Travis some pictures of the broken area and within a couple of days a new one showed up in the mail. Hats off to Travis and Shop Nation. Can't say enough good to properly describe how happy I am with the product and the way this company responds to customer concerns. Buy one of these devices and get back to loving your Dewalt mitre saw!

I bought your dust collection chute for my DWS779 and it really works. I had to modify it so my LS4000 blade would fit. I used a rasp to open the left side of the chute 5 degrees. The blade ($258) is so rigid it will not ease past your opening, bit as modified it collects the dust. Also added the MM Tools LED shadow light and Fastcap's zero clearance tape. Effectively I've got a DWS780 and saved $200. Keep up your efforts at fixing problems.

Just ordered this. I just bought the DeWalt 780. Home Depot lists it as $649. I just got it on sale for $499. The $150 saved more than paid for this dust collection chute. I would think the manufacturers would have a big interest in buying these and just sell their miter saws with them already attached and included with their new saws. I hope you're trying to contact them and get them on board with adding these to their new saws. You definitely have filled a niche desperately needed and I hope they all jump on board. You'll make a fortune off this if they decide to buy these for their new saws and you rightfully deserve all the success it would bring you.

So I bought one of these and was pretty excited about it for about a month. It definitely solved the dust collection issue. I also saw a video where you addressed some issues with larger pieces of wood getting sucked up and obliterating the 3D printed part of this system. Despite being fully aware of that possibility, and taking steps to avoid it, it eventually happened to mine as well. A block about the size of my hand that I was cutting off the end of a large piece, got pulled up just enough to bind between the blade and the dust collector, and the dust collector obviously gave way immediately. It’s a great system, but I almost feel like these would have to be cast from aluminum for them to truly be safe, as shards of brown plastic flying everywhere was a bit sketchy.

Here’s the rub: how does it work without the vacuum i.e. with a dust bag? Working on jobsites, we can’t always have a vacuum running along with a saw because we’ll pop a breaker. Instead, we use the dust bags that come with the saw and it significantly cuts down on sawdust spraying out the back.

Looks good! I have one of these saws and the dust collection is a real nuisance. The inefficiency is one thing, the blasted hose coming out the dead back of it is the real headache. An already deep saw gets even deeper when you hook up the dust collection. Then the hose gets in the way when trying to swing the saw for various cuts. I will be picking one of these up in the near future. Will probably wait until this fall. I don't do many wood working projects during the summer, spend my time doing yard projects.

I have the DeWalt 779, and it's a dust throwing machine. The OEM collection isn't even worth mentioning. A lot of times, the suction from a shop vac will collapse the flimsy rubber 'lips'. I've come to grips with the reality of power miter boxes and dust collection: You'll never, ever get 100% of the dust. As is with most other tools, there will always be some residual dust escaping. I built a full box around my old DeWalt (non-slide) miter box, and it captures probably 85%-90% of the dust. But there is still enought left to necessitate cleaning up. When I tackle any sort of dust collection adaptation, I'm happy to get 75% of it. Anything more, and I'm estatic.

Just ordered one for my DWS779. Can't wait. I currently don't even use dust collection. For the tiny amount of sawdust that actually gets into the vac with the factory system, it's not even worth the time and effort to hook it up. A massive flaw in an otherwise decent miter saw. EDIT: Just took delivery of mine and finished the install. This dust chute performs exactly as advertised and is a MUST HAVE for this saw.

I own both the DeWalt (personal saw) and the Hercules (lives in my high school robotics lab). I might prefer the DeWalt based solely on the lever vs knob to change the angles on miter cuts, but that’s it. The Hercules is a fantastic saw, and I recommend it to others based on the price. I’ve had many other high school teams in my lab that discounted it because it’s from Harbor Freight until they’ve used mine, and then they’ve gone out and bought one after. I think a review would be great as others are not giving it a chance for the same reason.

I recently purchased your 'stl' files for the DWS780 in the hope that the unit would fit my DHS780. If I had asked, you would probably have told me it wouldn't suit my DHS780, but I took the chance/gamble and it didn't work out. The stl files are fine and the prints were perfect, so this is not a complaint. Simple fact is (I didn't realize before) that the DHS780 motor housing is larger and so is therefore more forward located than the smaller motor housing on the DWS780. Yes I could see this from photos, but didn't realize the extent of the difference. Your unit fits perfectly on the mounting holes of the DHS780, it is just that the outlet aims directly at the motor housing not allowing any flexible hose to be fitted. My simple take is that if the current DWS780 outlet section is curved forward towards a more vertical direction that this unit could be used perfectly on a DHS780. Are you planning on designing a model that will fit a DHS780? Also, the outlet thread on your DWS780 version has a right hand thread, whereas the standard DeWalt hose and connector fittings have a 32mm left hand thread. Is there a possibility of incorporating a 32mm (1.25 inch) left hand thread on the outlet?

I’ve been leaning towards the 12” Bosch Axial Glide, but it almost seems to be 6 of one half dozen of another when compared to others. I know Festool is supposed to be the best, but I’m not going to spend that being a diy guy. I just want to get as close as possible to “perfect” as possible. Since it’s designed and built by human hands, there really is no such thing. Just a saw that stays in alignment as it should. I’ve heard pros & cons on the Hercules, but will wait for your input. I have tried numberous "shop fixes" with different pipe sizes and parts of old plastic bottles, duct tape, etc and nothing works like I'm seeing here. I will be ordering the digital files for my 3D printer, and thank you for those. Stay tuned for results......I do have one question......what are the dimensions of the chute flap, please?

I just decided on the DW780 in part because of your channel. I am a big Makita user, but I couldn't justify the price/features against the 780 on sale at HD for $550. The Herc was tempting, but my fondling tests in store led me to believe it would not be quite as stiff and repeatable accurate on cross cuts. a side by side comparison of the 780 and Herc clone would be great. Missing on all the youtube reviews is good testing of cross cut accuracy. The 5 cut method that is used for table saw sleds can be used. I used this to determine that the 10 inch craftsman slider I had could never be adjusted to provide the accuracy I need. As a nod to HF, I have bought the Herc stand. So I will have a Yellow/Blue hybrid, that would come close to Makita Green when mixed. LOL

It's really interesting seeing you go through design process and all the factors for consideration for the se dust collection mods! I would also be interested to hear more about the HF Hercules saw- their Hercules line has been getting really positive reviews from all over the internet, even when they are instrumented tests, so I would love to see something more in depth on their woodworking tools/saws, as most of the coverage seems to be focused on their drill and impacts. Keep up the Greatness!

Great job Travis! Love your work man. Have you looked into the Rigid 12” sliding compound mitre saw (R4222)? I got a great deal on one & could use help mitigating as much of the dust as possible. The only other seemingly close to workable options I see is Jerry rigging sheets of plastic & see if magnet can hold it together. Thanks for the work you do & share in your videos.

I watched this video and agree, my Dewalt miter saw works really well, but the dust collector sucks (NOT). I purchased the Shop Nation version and as soon as it arrived I installed it (easy installation process and there is a video in case you need help). I tested during a simple build and even though it wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, it worked much better than the stock system. I'll still wear my dust mask but clean up is much less after my projects. To me it was an easy investment in the best interest of my lungs and the rest of my shop. Thumbs up!!!

I've been watching your other dust collector videos hoping you'd do one for the DeWalt eventually. The stock collection is trash but I love my saw, there are probably better ones there but it's never let me down and it feels like a quality product that'll last a lifetime. Can't wait to add this to it.

Hola! 🖐I really enjoy your videos showing all of the study and research you put into these designs. Even for someone like me who will NEVER endeavor into anything even remotely close to a project like that, not only do I find it interesting but I feel like I learn something new. I feel it gives me perspective as to how to look at a particular challenge or obstacle and think things through a little before smacking it with a hammer or taking a saw to it hahaha! Take care and have a good one, Adios! 👊

Question: if you increased the size of the of the chamber that routes under the black slide bar that attaches to the cover, what is the cross-sectional area.....and what diameter vacuum hose would it equate to? For the people who have higher vacuum capability in their shops, the larger the hose that could be put on there, the better it is going to work. The slo-mo shots in your video shows that a lot of the bigger particles have enough inertia to ricochet out of the inlet and escape the airflow. Two things that would prevent this is increased air velocity entering the inlet....which can be done by increased vacuum capability....and by using something like a thin bristle brush perimeter to the inlet. Using long bristles, it should flex to allow it to conform to the fence, wood pieces, etc.... but still allow some air to pass through the bristles to pull in additional sawdust, but ALSO create a barrier that ricocheting particles will hit, then be sucked in by the vacuum.

Air flow is actually not what you're after, you need as much static pressure as possible and that comes from either a dust extractor or a shop vac. A large dust collector would perform terribly for this
@python3574
@python3574 Год назад
@@ShopNation I think you're either a little confused on how vacuum works or have confused what you are trying to say. You definitely do NOT want as much static pressure as possible. Static pressure is pretty much the measure of INEFFICIENCY of the collection system. To increase it, you would need to produce MORE resistance to air flowing through the system. To do that you could simply install a SMALLER hose onto the system, which would kill your dust collecting ability because it can't flow as much air. In short, CFM = dust collecting power. The higher the CFM, the better you will collect dust. That's why I mentioned increasing the cross-sectional area of the choke point of your design to allow increasing the vacuum hose size. If a large dust collector performs terribly at this, it is either a very poorly operating dust collector, or there's a design limitation in the collection system. A shop vac is never going to produce the CFM a dust collector will, and CFM = Performance.

You've got great solutions! I've heard from a lot of people that they rarely use the bevel/miter, me included. Have you considered making a version that increases efficency even if it affects bevel/miter cuts? I.E. Primarily for 90* cuts? If that was an alt option, I would be willing to remove it/sacrifice dust collection for the few times I used that functionality so that I could have better collection for the straight cuts I do 90% of the time, and I think a lot of others would too. Just throwing that out there. Thanks for all your hard work and info. 👍

Have you thought about a downdraft “mount” in addition to your creation? Supports the saw but is a grate to allow the dust and bits to fall or be vacuumed at the table level.

I second this. Would be interesting to see if it makes an improvement. I notice a lot of dust settling under the saw itself. Even pulling air through the stock insert would help i think.
