Dexter E-Z Lube Axle - How to Grease Casita Travel Trailer Wheel Bearings by RV Adventures

11 - Grease your Dexter Axle with E-Z Lube fittings on your Casita Travel Trailer in a few simple steps. A lot of folks swear by the old and tried method of pulling the wheels, removing the bearings, cleaning, and repacking them by hand. I talked to an engineer at Dexter because I too was unsure about these "E-Z Lube" fittings. He explained the design of an enclosed hub and bearing assembly that directs the grease from the E-Z Lube fitting to the back of the bearings and then through them and out the front. He told me to watch the Dexter video on this explaining how they work. It convinced me that you don't have to grease the bearings the old way anymore so I am giving you a link to it... you decide because I am no expert... • Dexter E-Z Lube System

Nice video, can't believe you did that wearing a yellow jacket! One thing to watch out for is the sharp edge on the inside of the bearing cap. I've cut my finger on that while trying to clean out excess grease.

Thank you for a very clear and simply showing explanation. I agree that for the little bit of cost/grease it would be worthwhile to pump out the old dark grease...maybe not absolutely necessary, but for a couple of bucks and a couple of pumps, provides peace of mind...thanks again for very clearly explained video without any BS

Thanks for posting an awesome video. After watching you do it, I'm not apprehensive about doing mine. I was worried you could blow the rear seal out, but that is why Dexter says not to use a pneumatic grease gun. And the more I think about it, those grease seals are in there tight. I don't believe there is anyway to blow them out doing it by hand like you did. Has anyone ever watched a video on how to remove that rear grease seal. It takes muscle and using a claw hammer or some other type of tool to get them out. Even then it's a PITA.

I just saw your VID on the hose storage. Very good and easy. I just bought a 2017 Casita and I was wondering about the wheel bearings. I was going to have it done. Your VID is very explanatory. You can do it... I am just a little younger than you and I too remember my father taking off the wheels and repacking bearing by hand on our boat trailer. I am glad that modern day axle companies are making the job very easy. Thank you for the comment.

Thank you for sharing. It's definitely easier greasing bearings with the easy grease, but it is definitely much more wasteful.
@jamesglenn520
@jamesglenn520 2 года назад
It's not Wasteful. If you took everything apart and cleaned and regreased it wouldn't you discard the old grease?🤔🤣
@UncleSarkis
@UncleSarkis 2 года назад
@@jamesglenn520 What are you laughing at? Have you ever greased bearings without an zert fitting? It takes a little more effort but not nearly as much grease is used. It doesn't take a whole tube of grease to pack those bearings, there's an unnecessary void it is filling up.
@jamesglenn520
@jamesglenn520 2 года назад
@@UncleSarkis The proper name for the fitting is Zerk not Zert. The E-Z Lube spindles are designed to be greased easily by consumers and were originally designed for boat trailers to keep out water 💧 But yes they do require the use of more grease to properly flush out the contaminated grease. And yes I have packed Hundreds of Conventional bearings over my life time and understand that they require less grease 👍

These things are the greatest invention for trailers. Wish they'd had these when I was boating as a young man!!! Unfortunately for me, the caps that Jayco puts on their trailers makes is much harder to do. And, it's so darn hot here in AZ that the grease falls off rather easily inside their hub cover. It's better in my case to remove the tire and rim, then do the bearings. Thanks for the video!

Liz Childers Hi... the Casita manual states "Repack wheel bearings annually", so since the wording "repack" is kind of out of date, I checked with Dexter and they say every 12,000 miles or 12 months. So, I do it each year as a part of my annual "get the trailer ready" for another year of RV Adventures. Thank you for the comments. Happy travels!

The grease flows through the bearings and out around the hub as you pump in new grease, so there is not overfilling.

Yes. I have 4 scissor jacks. The 2 that are located in the rear are welded to the trailer and are for stabilization and to me, awkward to lower and raise. One of them even broke after about 6 months. The scissor jacks are much easier and allow for more height differences.

LAZY Lube is the biggest fraud ever committed by the RV industry. You didn't service anything. You don't know the condition of the bearings, brakes, magnets, or bearing end play. Hub centers should never be packed more than 50%. Bearings must have .001" to .005" end play. This system was designed for use on boat trailers. It is for emergency use only. It is to remove water from a hub until a proper repair can be made. 40 year retired ASE master auto and heavy-duty truck technician.
