Dexter Gordon killer rhythm changes solo analysis + key philosophical take aways you need to think about to play jazz in 2024.
In this video we take a detailed bar by bar analysis of Dexter´s epic solo on second balcony jump from his 1962 "Go" album.
As well we look at the questions:
Are you using Jazz as a vehicle to show how fast you can play?
Do you want to know why every solo you improvise sounds the same?

My name is Nick Homes. I am a non genius musician who struggled for many years to find out the secrets of jazz improvisation. Throughout 40 years of playing, and obsessive investigation I have focussed on building systems of learning for my students so they can improve , and reach their learning goals with the highest probability whilst having fun!

An insightful and interesting analysis. Dexter makes it look easy but this reveals the intellectual depth of his thinking and his mastery of harmony.

Love the Masterclass! Working on Jerry Jerome's solo specifically for now @Jazzduets Any idea when volume 2 would be out?

Interesting juxtaposition there…Nick says around 12:00 mark that the beauty of jazz is in the freedom (eg to play globally over chords versus locally) whereas Branford implies in his earlier comment that if Stella isn’t played at the original tempo then you’re not playing it “correctly.”

Branford though to be fair does not mention the word "correct" . He is speaking about the ego. But you are right, if musicians wish to show off it is their prerogative.

Great analysis. But you missed the Mona Lisa quote at A2 listen to it! That was one of his favorite quotes.

Thank goodness he stopped doing those "new age" lessons with no rhythm. Dot you quarters instead of the rests IMHO. Easier to read IMHO.
