I believe it was a catch, contact. Then down by contact on the one yard line. Just as it was called to begin with. Just as I saw it live.

Over a year later...It was a catch. What pissed me off most was that the league spent a crazy amount of time and effort trying to justify their decision. I have seen dozens of calls this year where the receiver secured the ball, drug their toes in bounds and hit the ground out of bounds. They were all ruled catches. No "football move" was made.

I knew Dez Bryant caught that ball from the very first moment of the initial catch in full speed. So did the referee who was standing right there. I'm going out on a limb here but I believe Dallas would've scored a touchdown which would have ignited a huge momentum shift to the Cowboys. Momentum means everything in the NFL! Whoever has it usually wins. Everybody talks about how Aaron Rodgers would have just stormed right down the field to guarantee the Packers either a field-goal to tie or even a touchdown to win. But people forget that one of the big themes of the entire season for the Dallas Cowboys is just how much their defense was underestimated and how many times that defense secured huge victories for the Cowboys. I think it's highly likely that the Cowboys would've gone on to win that game. And after seeing the way the Seahawks performed for most of that game against the Packers, I believe the Cowboys would've had a very good chance of beating them again. I've had a lot of time to think about these things and I say all of the above with sound mind. I think anybody else who honestly assesses the situation could easily draw the same conclusions that I have. It's really not so far-fetched. But at the very least, the officials decision to overturn Bryants' amazing catch robbed ALL of us of a FAR more spectacular finish to that game. Instead, what did we get? A VERY questionable overturning of just the kind of AMAZING catch we all hope to see when watching the playoffs. We got the most extreme example of very poor judgment applying a very stupid rule as a shitty excuse to steal a great play from a great player. Quite possibly robbing the Dallas Cowboys of a trip back to Seattle for what would have been an exciting rematch and possibly even a trip to the Super Bowl. The only other thing I will say is that I'm confident the Dallas Cowboys would've played better than the Green Bay Packers did against Seattle. The Green Bay Packers were an excellent team this year, but they were also possibly the most over-hyped NFL team. I think the Dallas Cowboys were the better team.

You don't know for sure though. And granted I don't either. But that doesn't change the fact that it wasn't a catch. The ball moved. And popped out of his control. It's the rules
@macmusic08
@macmusic08 9 лет назад
THE TANNER NATION Actually yes...I DO know for sure. Because I have two eyes and they both work just fine. I knew it was a catch at full speed, before I even saw a single slow motion replay. The rules you're referring to do not apply in this case because....again....HE CAUGHT THE BALL! I've been watching NFL football for a long, LONG time. Seen lots of catches JUST LIKE THIS CATCH....none of them were ever overturned. Dez Bryant and the Dallas Cowboys were robbed. It's that simple.
@thetannernation

macmusic08 Then use your "functioning eyes" to read the rule book. Guess what? Back then our cameras couldn't do what they can now. Thats why DROPPED passes like this one are called now. But weren't back then. Ground moved the ball. Ball popped out. And you can suck a lemon.

I don't give a rats fucking ASS about the stupid rule....because the call never should have been made to begin with! It was a fucking CATCH, you idiot! You know it...EVERYONE knows it! We've all seen plenty of catches JUST LIKE THIS ONE IN QUESTION! They pretty much NEVER get reversed! You're allowing your (obvious) hatred of the Dallas Cowboys to cloud your "judgement" on this. Had the exact same play happened to one of YOUR teams players (in the final moments of a fucking PLAYOFF game, no less)....you'd be singing a VERY different tune! I'm quite certain of that! I'm done here. Wasted enough time as it is.

Dez Bryant clearly caught the ball. A catch is when the receiver has possession of the ball with both feet on the ground so if that happens that's an automatic catch. He was also down because his forearm and midsection was already down before the ball hit the ground. So that was a catch and he was down. I'm not a cowboys fan but that call was messed up. It was a completion.

At 0:08 the pass is caught and pinned with 2 hands to his chest, followed shortly by the second foot down, at which point he attempted to reach the ball out where he was down at the one yard line. I've never understood people who say this isn't a catch. At this point I assume its a troll and it doesn't change anything but I know in my soul that was a catch.

I'm a huge Packers fan. If you look at it frame by frame, it was 50/50. He caught it, tried to maintain it, moves forward, slips and ball comes out and then gets it in the end zone. I'd say that was a catch. Packers moved on and had that epic collapse.... Seattle moved on to SB and had the epic collapse. Dallas got to GB with that lucky win too... so it's Karma all over for the NFC.... f that cowboys, but that was a catch.

Look at the NFL Rules. Section 8, Article 3, Item 4. (It states) Ball Touches Ground. If the ball touches the ground after the player secures control of it, it is a catch, provided that the player continues to maintain control. Dez "continued" to maintain control. If you go back to Article 3, (Completed or Intercepted Pass), read a) b) and c). Then read Note 1 and 2. I believe this adds up to a successful catch. The rule is just fine. The interpretation is the problem. No-one except the team that was responsible for creating the rule (back in the day) knows what they were really thinking.
@tannardarr

This is the best view. It shows him securing the ball with two hands. turning to square up to the goal with his right hand. Changing hands to the left hand, where he had the ball secured on THREE sides. Forearm had one side, that big ole primary left hand covering all sides of the end. That is a secure catch, three sides secure. He had control all the way to the ground. There was no fumbling to the ground. The ball did not move in his grip. You can see the ball stay in the same position> The ball was secured with football moves before. Foot ball moves. two hand catch. Turn with ball in right hand. switch to left hand. Extend left hand. Land on left foot, turn and step on right foot. Plant left foot and dive. Extend ball in left arm. If you cant' find TWO out of that list, you can kiss my dingleberried covered behind. How's dem apples? I see him down with the football inches from the goal line.

It doesn't matter if his feet, knees or his other balls touched. It's the whole process of a falling catch and maintaining control. This is a falling catch and at no point did he re-maintained his body when he was falling. Sure, he kinda lunged forward but that was still in the process of falling from that catch. So that didn't count as a "football move". What he should of done was tuck the ball. It wasn't like there was only 10 seconds left to play or something.

@TonyStebbins
@TonyStebbins 16 дней назад
This is still incomplete. You have to hold the ball if youre hitting the ground. I know they say it was a catch but heres some facts... It was ruled complete, then overturned in replay. Ball was in his hands at the highest point, it was knocked out of his hands. The moment he got it again he was falling. When you fall with the ball, the ball can touch the ground, but it cannot bobble because of the ground. The ball hit the ground and was out of his grasp completely. This is still not a catch, it will never be a catch.
@jeffpokorski1801
@jeffpokorski1801 9 лет назад
This is the best view i have seen that the ball did hit the ground. i assumed like others that the 3 steps with possession constituted a catch already, but all referees seem to be clear on this that the amount the 3 steps were still considered a part of the full process of catching the ball, and do not matter here. I know the refs like to cover each others ass a little but I think this is accurate. As for the ball being recovered by bryant after lost possession. The refs say that it does not matter as the catch was voidedonce the ball touched the ground and Dez lost control. I highly doubt that Dez's stretching of the ball (arm) and subsequent loss of possession was ever meant to be an act 'common to the game' as the rule states even though it is a common act to football of course. Doe's anyone really believe that Dez s should get a bailout on this because he extended his arm and that that was how the rule was intended here. Of course not. I must admit though the rules committee really left the door open here with this common act part of the rule. Other than that this appears to just be a bad rule that needs changing (altering), but was applied correctly. It just looks to be a suprisingly easy call with this particular video in slow motion. the real problem here is that Dez did what a lot of receivers do in this situation. They put one arm out to protect there fall. It is horrible technique especially when you know you have to control the ball when hitting the ground, but unfortunately it is often somewhat instinctive. i have tried hard to get past the emotions involved in this play. Once you do it is hard to give any argument for catch other the the arm extension as being a common act to the game. Common act has to be defined better even though the refs probably have specific ideas what that is. in short flawed rule and bad catch technique. Catch with 2 hands.

This is a alright view but I seen a different better view which shows his elbow and knee touching the ground first before the ball did which according to the rule book indicates that he would have been down. I am not a cowboy fan at all but love the game of football. In my opinion the catch was already achieved when he caught the ball in the air without it juggling and he came down landing with two feet inbounds with the ball secured let alone taking three steps before he actually was tripped up in the attempt to dive toward the end zone. In other words the catch and the diving is two totally different actions. The actions of jumping up and coming down with total control of the ball with two feet inbounds and running out three steps itself was already the achieved catch! Now if he had dove in the air and caught the ball in the air and came STRAIGHT down to the ground and lost control of the ball then I can understand this rule being applied. But he already had long enough control even as he had already took extra steps and diving in the air before he CHOSE to dive in the air. The elbow to the arm holding the ball from a different camera view than this one I viewed clearly shows his elbow touching the ground as well as a knee BEFORE the ball touched the ground and popped upwards which means he was ALREADY down at that POINT!!! So those two things alone is enough evidence to had ruled him down at the 1 yard line making it first and goal! Again not a cowboy fan but I took the packers upsetting them at home in green bay.

@DiverDan1000-3

Of course it was a catch. Just like Calvin Johnson's catch against the Bears for the game-winning td where he caught the ball held it in the air with one hand and continued to hold onto it after hitting the the ground on his butt...and only losing the grip when he used the ball to help him up to celebrate the td. The NFL throws away common sense to clearly define what everything is. They don't use the "looks like a duck and walks like a duck" method of determining what just happened on a play.
@kevinsinger7310
@kevinsinger7310 2 года назад
The one little tidbit yall seem to not see when you look at this play: Shields hand got in there and disrupted the catch. So despite Dez having the ball in his hands when his first leg came down, he was not in possession of it as he did not have control of the ball. The 2nd leg comes down while trying to secure the ball, which becomes the 1st leg ruled in the catching process, and hes starting to go to the ground. The 3rd step he takes is now the 2nd step of the catch and again, is in the middle of going to the ground. Ball clearly hits the ground and bounces up and out of his hand. Incomplete.

@kevinsinger7310
@kevinsinger7310 Год назад
@@tonyrizzo615 the fact his hand was in there and on the ball is what matters and changes the process of the catch. So the football move and 3 steps he took dont count because of the hand deflecting the ball at first. So now it becomes the process of going to the ground even at the point he had full control of the ball. He hits the ground, the ball is moved by the ground, which means its not secure enough, and its an incomplete. Remove your cowboys bias and watch the whole process 100s of times like i did, frame by frame and all. You will see the point he actually gets the ball secured from the deflection, which starts on his 2nd step, which in this case becomes the first eligible step, and on the 2nd one (3rd actual step) he starts going to the ground, so now he has to survive the ground

For the people here that keep saying its a catch because his elbow was down doesn't know football. That doesn't apply to this catch, if he had caught it then ran with it or did a football move, then yes it would have but he did neither. And the ball did hit the ground.That was part of the reason why it was ruled incomplete, the final reason is that both his hands comes off the ball which is why it was overturned.

Eric Thomas its oblivious you don't know football. first he catches the ball at the 5 yrd line, second turns and takes 3 steps towards the goal line and then reaches out for the goal line which is considered a common act of the game. now you want to say that the ball touched the ground. here is the rule that deals with that : 'If a player is tackled and loses control of the ball at or after the time he makes contact with the ground, the player is treated as down and the ball is not in play. However, in the NFL and CFL, if a ball carrier falls without an opponent contacting him, the ground can indeed cause a fumble." and there was plenty of contact between Dez and the defender.

Not a bad video! But it doesn't show the full possession. It is ridiculous to assume that Bryant is falling before he trips over Shields! He was continuing to run. He doesn't fall unto he trips over Shields' right leg. And that doesn't happen until he has both feet down and control of the ball. That is all that can be required as possession. It was legal possession before the third element, WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ACQUIRING POSSESSION OF THE BALL, was written. According to the rule book, A RUNNER is the only player who has possession of the ball. A receiver is the player attempting to catch the ball. The third element requires the player to be A RUNNER before the action he makes. It is a post-possession requirement with no relationship to A CATCH. Totally invalid requirement. If you understand HOW the rules are "tied together", then you understand what I mean!

I still have to keep returning to this post because I find it so entertaining reading all of these comments from cowboys haters who magically transformed into NFL rules experts following the call on this obvious catch. Hey fuckheads, I'm not an expert on anything but I've been watching the NFL for the past 40 years and I know a fucking catch when I see one. Some of you sound way too young to remember the Cowboys vs Broncos Super Bowl when Butch Johnson made that amazing TD catch where, after landing in the end zone, the ball ended up leaving his grip. But it did not matter, it was still a touchdown because Butch had well-established possession of the ball BEFORE it came loose. You can hate the Dallas Cowboys all day long and it doesn't change the fact that this was a legitimate catch. And judging this whole situation just from the perspective of being an NFL fan who appreciates exciting, competitive playoff games, AND given how shitty Green Bay played against Seattle...I honestly believe that, had the Cowboys scored, they would have won against Green Bay and I believe they would have played much better against Seattle than the Packers did...and possibly would have even beaten them again, as they had already done in magnificent fashion in front of their home crowd earlier in the season. So this was a very big deal that the NFL got very wrong and the Cowboys were screwed because of it. Set aside your hatred for the Cowboys and imagine this exact same thing happening to a receiver on your favorite team and how you would feel about it. I promise you all that you would agree with everything I'm saying. Please give me a fucking break about all of this talk about the rules. What a bunch of horseshit!

albert pollard It's clear that the ball hit the ground. The argument that people have that think he caught it is that he had possession of the ball meaning that when it did hit the ground the play should've been ruled dead with the Cowboys having the ball on the one yard line.

albert pollard read the rules the ground can not cause a fumble if, and here is the rule on the subject, 'If a player is tackled and loses control of the ball at or after the time he makes contact with the ground, the player is treated as down and the ball is not in play. However, in the NFL and CFL, if a ball carrier falls without an opponent contacting him, the ground can indeed cause a fumble." there was plenty of contact between dez and the defender

Easy call with replay - no catch. Perhaps the rule needs to be augmented or changed but per the rule the correct call was made.

so that got a bad call just like the bad call against the lions with the pass interference shit happens get over it. they wouldn't have gotten to this game if it wasn't for the bad call against the lions. Bad calls help sometimes and bad calls hurt sometimes its part of the game. Refs have the final decision and that's how the game goes

Again - someone who doesn't know what the argument is. Whether or not it hit the ground is irrelevant. What people are upset about is there are many that feel the very act of taking 3 steps and lunging for the goal line is an "act common to the game". Or the infamous "football move". Being that they feel a football move was indeed made, it makes the fact that the ball comes out a FUMBLE after a RECEPTION. Not an incomplete pass. The process of making the catch was completed when Dez made this football move. He did not NEED to maintain possession to the ground because the football move completes the catch. Rules state : "A forward pass is complete (by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) if a player, who is inbounds: (a) secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and (b) touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and (c) maintains control of the ball long enough, after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, to enable him to perform any act common to the game (i.e., maintaining control long enough to pitch it, pass it, advance with it, or avoid or ward off an opponent, etc.). Note 1: It is not necessary that he commit such an act, provided that he maintains control of the ball long enough to do so. Note 2: If a player has control of the ball, a slight movement of the ball will not be considered a loss of possession. He must lose control of the ball in order to rule that there has been a loss of possession." Did Dez complete (a)? Yes. He secures the ball PRIOR to the ball touching the ground. He lost control of it AFTER it touched the ground. Did Dez complete (b)? Yes. He touches the ground inbounds with both feet. Did Dez complete (c)? Yes. He COULD have pitched it because he had the TIME to. That's all that is required. He doesn't ACTUALLY have to pitch it (as noted in Note 1 of this rule). He avoided an opponent, and he most certainly advanced with it. Because he completed a, b AND c, the pass is completed already. He no longer has to maintain control throughout the catch to the ground. The catch was ALREADY established as per this rule right here. The only situation where maintaining the ball all the way to the ground would be necessary is if both (a) and (b) above are met, but (c) is not met. Yet, none of the official explanations address this rule. They ignore the fact that the question here is not whether or not he maintained control, but whether or not he made a football move. The best explanation that we have gotten is that, "yeah he DID make a move, but only kind of". That's LITERALLY what the league has said about the football move on this play. I've got some news for you. The call on the field was of a completed pass. To overturn, you must have indisputable evidence NOT that he lost possession of the ball, but you must have clear evidence that he did NOT make ANY football move. Do you want to watch this replay one more time, and conclude that you have irrefutable evidence that Dez bryant did not have time to pitch the ball? Do you want to claim that it is clear that he did NOT advance the ball or ward off an opponent?

@CetusDefense

Actually, it's also tripping by GB cornerback Sam Shields. After he comes down, he sticks both of his legs up to trip Bryant, who by that time has decided to dive for the TD since he's almost there. Also Willoughby Krenzteinburg you are correct. And there is also a distinction made between "possession" and "control" in the NFL rules. To GET possession, you have to have a FIRM GRIP and CONTROL of the ball, but to LOSE possession, "slight movements of the ball" will not cause you to lose possession - you also have to lose CONTROL of the ball. I don't think Bryant ever lost control of the ball, although he may not have a firm grip on it all times, it never got loose on the ground, never went out of bounds, never got touched by any other player, linesman, etc. It's like a basketball player or soccer player dribbling, the dribbler has CONTROL of the ball even though he's not touching it at all times. This happens lots of times in the NFL, the QB bobbles the snap, it bounces off his own line, etc. - the refs don't rule that the QB "lost possession" or "lost control" of the ball.

J Anthony "Sam Shield, Packer starting CB on coverage (and very good coverage I might add) said afterward when asked about the play "it was a catch, no doubt" Yeah, he's wrong too. Two people can be wrong at the same time, your point is invalid. "Sorry for calling you an idiot and liar and no it is not ok for me and not for you" It's okay, don't be such a hypocrite though..... "I am very glad you are not the one deciding the rules of football." It wouldn't matter, it's not a catch in my league or the actual league. "If in any stretch of imagination that was not a catch, then half of the complete catches made in the NFL are not catches" Uuummmmmmm........no. No they are not. You're talking directly out of your shit cake asshole. "How many great catches by Hall of Fame Wr's are now null and void" Name. ONE. "So you are either not an athlete at all and thus have no idea what a catch is or you have such a low level of integrity and honesty you will not admit the truth to win an argument" I was actually a safety in college, ummmm, what exactly did you play as??? "You hate the Cowboys so bad you will lie to get your way." No, I could give a shit about the Cowgirls. My team isn't even the AFC and we have nothing resembling a history between us. Just explain to me..... media.graytvinc.com/images/Dez+Bryant+vs+Packers.jpg How is this possession? "Have a good life, I give up, you win. I bet you believe in evolution too." J Anthony You said he had possession as he grazed the ground, yet you *STILL* dodge the question...... HOW is this possession? media.graytvinc.com/images/Dez+Bryant+vs+Packers.jpg "I have heard enough players and former players say they don't understand the view of Dez's catch." The only reason they think that is because it landed back into his body once he lost possession, if the ball bounced 50 feet away from him, you wouldn't think he caught it. Not my fault Cowgirl fans like you have no cognitive thinking.

TBSandNFL lol perfect point, I say the ground cant cause a fumble but the ground could cause an incomplete pass.. By the way if the packers would have made the exact same catch and the reff would have said Touchdown every cowgirl would go look for a video and start zooming in saying the ball touched the ground therefore its incomplete. My point: incomplete pass, yet cowgirls acted like with that touchdown they would have won the game with 3minutes remaining yea right, Rogers would have pulled another TD, worst case scenario a 30-45 yard field goal for the win..

I am S.F. 49ers fan. I was SHOCKED that the referee called incompleted pass. What I ve seen was a clearly good catch by Dez Bryant that still had a possession with the ball after catched the ball in the air before reaching to the goal line in three strides. The ball did not touch the ground at all without releasing his hand. it was merely bobbled up in the air from above his hand and arm due of slamming hard on the ground and landed on Bryant's chest when he rolled his back on the end zone as he repossessed it..( HIS HAND STILL INTACT THE BALL ) NOT THE BALL EVEN TOUCH THE GROUND... THAT WAS A COMPLETED CATCH. NOT INTENTIONALLY GROUNDED CATCH.. The Referee made a bad call and even Mike Pereira....There is something between the referees and Green Bay Coach that might been being bribed to win this game. FIRED MIKE PEREIRA AND REFEREES..... HE IS STUPIDITY ...He cannot see it clearly at all or did on purposes... I CAN SEE IT AS TOUCHDOWN OR HALF YARD TO GOAL LINE...... COWBOYS SHOULD HAVE WON......

It was a catch and down by contact at the 1/2 yard line. The problem is with the "move common to the game" part of this terrible call. If taking 3 steps, changing hands, and stretching for the goal line was, as it should been, deemed a football moe the rest of the process is irrelevant. That's the crappy part of the call. Anyone can plainly see he possessed and controlled the ball. It was a catch in every definition. Blandino should be drug tested!
