I did B.C.T. at Jackson 1970. We NEVER had food like this..Freaking never! Not even in any of the A.I.T schools. So this must be the newer Chaplains School chow hall., Assistant Chaplains too. never forget the cold oat meal.We had fake meat 10 times a week, served in various forms, from chipped beef to rubber hot dogs. Our chow hall could have been used as a movie set for Band of Brothers.
I was in from '86-'10. I miss chow halls so much. Especially the omelet with ham and the hamburgers and fries. I was a drill sergeant at Jackson. I live about an hour away, I've been wanting to go there and eat for a long time.
Same here when I was there in 1998. Only difference is we actually had to do KP for a whole day during training. From what I here now it's all privatized.
I’m shocked, with the food that you were served. The food that I had at Ft. Lewis in 1970, would have been condemned by the Board of Health. I rated the food 🪰🪰🪰🪰. In contrast the food that was served in Vietnam, was like a Michelin four star restaurant.
I also thought DFAC food was great. 82nd was "ok" I used to walk over to some other battalions (or something, I actually have no idea who was supposed to be there, didn't then and still don't) DFAC about half a mile because for whatever reason theirs was better. Same menu just better quality. More care put into it I suppose. And the 1/73rds was very decent as well, it just got to the point my "schedule" didn't allow for me to be standing in line for an hour so I had to stop going. Also had to start paying out of pocket so combine those together and no more DFAC. I'll make fun of POGs all day everyday....but I draw the line at 92G. Those people are my heroes.
Had my bct here just graduated Dec 1st, food was good, not as good as it is here at fort eustis but we got steaks, ribs, fried chicken, enchiladas, burgers pretty often. Not a lot if variety for breakfast unless you got lucky and filed in first on a day they happened to serve breakfast burritos or breakfast pizza but having dfac over mres and hot a's was always a blessing and staff was nice.
The best ribs I’ve ever had were served at the DFAC at JBER (joint base elmendorf-Richardson) which you’d think it was on the Air Force side but it was actually on the army side. Airmen and soldiers also had the option the order burgers from the bowling alley, hot pressed club sandwiches, and a Mexican restaurant with burritos, taco salads more
I used to have a chef salad every day in the Air Force back in 1982. Fresh everything, with ham, boiled egg, cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, you name it.
My brother Private Pierce just graduated Basic from Fort Jackson and was sent to Fort Leonard Wood MI for AIT. Thank you for the inside peep to the base world. I wondered what it's like inside the DFAC. Food is everything. I'm sure I would love the food!
Dining facilities are very important to our military both in providing proper nutrition and as a morale booster, since this is something that personnel can look forward to everyday. So important that in past decades on remote sites I have heard of dining facilities that were run as top-tier restaurants with full service because that was the only means at hand to keep morale high in such a secluded place. I have heard stories of waiters bringing out Lobster and prime rib, incredible desserts, etc. Stateside dining is a little more cafeteria-like, but there are special menus during holidays, with a burger grill available always, and everything you could want at breakfast! Just try and stay off the fat-boy program!
