The final battle of this game. Give it your all and throw everything you have learned at Garland. He can take it.
As opposed to the usual 1 FT big dmg blasts on the boss and call it a day strat, I just use whoever I really like and the playstyle that I like. So it became turn hogging galore with Agrias BT. The best thing is, Garland's mechanics works well with this.
This should be the last time I write the info page about the boss.
Boss: Garland (Chaos)
Orb: (limit: 10)
+2: Player gets BRV gain
-1: Player/Boss action
Force:
0%: Player SPD-
30%: Player gets BRV/HP poison at the start of a turn
50%: Player AD+
FA 1: Soul of Chaos+ (AOE melee BRV+HP)
- 2T AOE delay
- 1T buff duration reduction
- 2T debuff duration reduction on the boss
- grants framed buffs "BRV/HP dmg taken reduction"
FA 2: Ultimate Chaos
(same effects)
Passive events:
- HP dmg taken reduced when launched
- on field turns, Garland changes aura colours: (nil - blue - yellow - red)
- after any action at red aura, Garland would use the ST attack "Flame+" to delay the target by 2T. This attack randomly attacks one target, disregarding the current one. Though it is possible to direct this attack with a target lock debuff.
1st life:
Boss cannot be defeated until "The Cycle of Battle" is used
The boss uses the "Cycle of Battle" at 50% HP, recovering all HP.
2nd life:
HP recovery threshold appears at 80/50%.
It can be dispelled through BRV gaining the entire party with on-turn action.
Garland also gains massive ATK/DEF/SPD at 80/40/20%, but this effect is dispelled after reaching 70/30/10%.
General Approach:
The orb is normally not very tight, but Garland probably has the most ridiculous FG gain in the game (partially due to the SPD- and AD+ force effects). The orb will start demanding attention if he gets too many moves off and delay you, both ST/AOE.
The delay attack from the aura is an off-turn attack. It can often pile up on top of the FA and his normal attacks. It would really start forming a cycle for him to keep attacking you if you keep getting delayed. Outside of the orb, the FA reduces both the duration of debuff on him and the buffs on you. Therefore, letting him move too much would cause even more disruptions.
Delay yourself!
Then again, the delays can work to your advantage. Counters and characters that rarely care about debuff duration would work perfectly. Faris, Rydia and Agrais are some of those characters. Agrias is exceptionally powerful, since her confusion would stop everything outside of FA and the off-turn delay "Flame+". If you let her carry a CA that locks Garland, you can also extend its duration with Agrias, so you will never have to worry about Garland delaying someone else or Agrias BT running out.
I treated this like a final test and used all of the crystal room related abilities and passives to my advantage. I used both U1 and D5 for HP regen (also Agrias) to counteract the HP poison, so I never have to worry about that. Agrias herself does not move that much, so she has a self delay instead of D5.
As usual, Lightning and Papalymo are there to kill the first life with simple turn hogging. You can obviously keep doing this till the end, but I thought there was no point to not use FR this time around.
I specifically saved the final crystal room ability (-20% boss mHP) after the 80% threshold, because experience told me that using it at the start of the 2nd life would have resulted in Garland healing 80% of that reduced HP back. It would still have triggered the HP recovery event, but I would rather not waste DPS.
I am pretty sure you need to BRV gain the ENTIRE party to get rid of the HP recovery, so I saved Raines LDCA and Hope LDCA for that. Even Papalymo's Umbral Ice BT effect doesn't count (nor does BRV gain from sphere like I have on Agrias).
After that I just let Lightning be Lightning.
I didn't mind letting this play out a little longer than usual, as I found out that Garland's animations are actually pretty cool. It may not have been a super difficult fight, but I do like there are still quite some mechanics and interactions you have to think about and interact with.
Closing
It has been perhaps 4 or 5 years since I played this game on JP. We have finally reached the end of the game (albeit quite abruptly). It has been pleasant interacting with you all throughout the years. I haven't decided what or whether to post more, currently I am quite preoccupied with a FFXIV ultimate. Regardless, I hope to see you all again some day, be it something about this game, future Dissidia, FF or something else. It has been really fun learning weird things about this game and thinking about team comps and strats.

Thank you for all of your videos and detailed descriptions! I've been following since around Lufenia+ and the descriptions along with the videos helped me to understand about each fight as well. Hopefully in another Dissidia game we'll have fun as well 😄

Honestly they couldn't have a chosen a more perfect way to send this game off in my opinion. Glad they gave the JP side the ending it deserved.

As someone who didnt play global, what they did for JP is so nice. Global always had a cheat sheet while JP was just blindly going into the next thing. The fact that they have much more characters to play with than global at the end is definitely good treatment to JP side.

Braving the unknown and having more tools are definitely some of the perks of playing JP, A lot of people like knowing what's ahead and plain accordingly, but I kind of like just diving in and test things. In the end though, the accelerated pace on GL actually caught up a lot. JP actually only had 4 new characters more than GL. It used to be a lot more, but I get the point why they tried to do that near the end. (well, a lot more if we are talking about characters with FR/BT)

GL loved the game just as much as JP.....they ended up deprived of a proper ending. I will admit that a 3 month heads up allowed us to taper off the game nicely.
