Growing tropical trees in Phoenix Arizona is a challenge, but it's even more challenging on the outskirts of town where we dip into the 20 degree range in winter. Today we're planting our fourth variety of guava and this is the White Peruvian variety. Now to see if we can keep this little one alive this year!

I live in Surprise, Az and when I make the hole I put a lot of water in it, not only to soften it, but to the last fill of water I put fertilizer that is diluted in water. I put organic fertilizer, manure, native soil and soil for cacti and citrus fruits on the soil. I know they must learn to live in our kind of soil, but I am giving them a chance to grow and strengthen their roots before they try to cross the soil barrier that we have. I see that you are a very beautiful couple

Clean pig ground! Ours went on pasture with the feeder steers each spring to farrow. When the sows were done, they all came down to the barn, sows in horse stalls, and the pigs in a corral to be processed. No blooms again on the Pakistan mulberry. But, no blooms on the radishes, either. Of course, when in the garden, those radish flower stalks are tasty. think that might be why? :) the tohono peas have been blooming since January, but frost was knocking them out of kilter, and no bugs to pollinate. Darn quail ate all the chia coming up! hasta, always good to see how things are down on Ma and Pa's spread :)

Hey Martin! Before I forget, for some reason some of your comments are not coming up when I try to reply. Not sure if you're not posting them or they're getting pulled for some reason, but know we're seeing them! I like the idea of pigs with the cows on pasture to farrow. Did you have some type of temporary shelter for mama and piglets?
@marschlosser4540
@marschlosser4540 3 года назад
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm I'm not pulling posts. My gracious wisdom standeth forever. Geezis, but family...! :) We had A-frames for sows to farrow, and to shelter in. Here, brush shelters and wallows (dust works) are vital for pigs. I don't know that you need advice about grain in summer, but, grain equals body heat. Summers were spent between the brush and clover pasture with grain as a treat to keep them tame. Mind that some animals can be bullies. Cattle can be worse than pigs, sheep worse than cattle. Goats just don't care. :)
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 года назад
@@marschlosser4540 that makes sense with the A-frames, I've seen older videos with those. Lori is really set on goats for some reason and they're at the bottom of my list. Pigs are my fav so far. We see that "pecking order" in all of the livestock we've had. There's always at least one that just does what it wants, come what may.
@marschlosser4540
@marschlosser4540 3 года назад
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm Goats are all right. Pardon me if I seem a little grim. Just ask the neighbors to plant prize roses. That way they feed there, not on the pom fruit trees, grape vines...And then there's predators. Cattle will help, as will pigs. Goats should be penned each night. Start with one lamb and train her. they catch on pretty fast. Animals are the best reason to limewash tree trunks. Hydrated lime will sting their mouths without harming them. A plus, it can be sprayed on, it's cheaper than paint, and lasts a fair amount of time. It also kills insects hiding in the bark, tho not as good as dormant oil will. As I was taught and have seen, pigs are the only animals that will bite off the hand that feeds them. Other animals might try, but... Keep rockin'!
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 года назад
@@marschlosser4540 ah, thanks for the tip on the lime wash. Hadn't heard of that one before, so we'll need to find it. Do you just make it at home or is it a product that you purchase?

As a second thought, Artichokes would do well also in that pen area.

Ooh, that's an interesting take on this area. Unique, perennial veggies that would probably stand up to rabbit pressure once established.
@GHumpty1965
@GHumpty1965 3 года назад
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm You could interspace Artichokes in between your fruit trees as a secondary crop to your trees to maximize your space and production. Or just use and chop n drop.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 года назад
@@GHumpty1965 we're trying to figure that one out. The key out here is everything needs irrigation, so we would need to divert water from the trees into those areas. Once the rings are closer together there will be some natural penetration into the soil between the trees, but most plants need a lot of water to survive our summer months.
@GHumpty1965

@EdgeofNowhereFarm

Hey Kylan. That's a great question and it's really hard to say which is the most successful. In terms of volume of good size fruit that's probably peaches. Total number of fruit would be mulberries. Vigorous growth and more unique fruit would be figs. But I can't discount apples which grow and produce really well also.

@@kylanve yeah, pretty much everything it seems. The only thing we're disappointed in so far are the Asian Pears. They are not growing well and really struggled this past summer. They may wind up being either reduced or eliminated all together depending on how they do this next year.
@kylanve
@kylanve 2 года назад
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm thatd a hard call. We had a fairly mild summer this year. What do you feel was more detrimental? The soil, the heat or insects? (Im assuming not the soil seeing how you amend :) )

@EdgeofNowhereFarm 2 года назад
@@kylanve I'm really not sure. The non-Asian pears around them are doing just fine on the same root stock, so I can only assume it's the combination of root stock and cultivar. We get pretty consistent winds out of the West. It may not be easy to make out, but when we stake a tree we set the stakes on the SW and NE sides to help protect them against that regular wind.

Hey Daz. I think you're onto something there. My thought was in-ground planting that has a chance to stand up against the onslaught of birds and rabbits. Might be able to put up some non-electrified fencing to keep out the rabbits to allow the starts to get a foothold.

My idea for the pig pen is either an herb garden area. You may not have to protect them from the birds as many herbs will naturally repel them. Also, I was thinking of an area where you could put long term veggies like asparagus. They take years to grow so you will need a dedicated space for them.
