There are some people that really like that harder feeling of the original and gearbox paddles but for the majority of people I think the softer feel will be preferred.
I was really waiting for your review on this paddle. I have the original Icon and really enjoy it. As always you really covered all the bases in your review and in an objective, unbiased way. I really like the control of the original Icon. I have added 1/4 inch lead tape under the replaceable edge guard that adds some control and increase the sweet spot to a degree. I wish they wouldn't have used the "grit paint". It seems to detract from the overall quality of the paddle in my opinion.
Very comprehensive review as always. I own the original Icon and also the V2E as well as a Vice. I sold my Pro Kennex ACE because I did not like the feel on impact. The V2 does not play like the original for sure, but I do like it over my ACE. The softer feel as you mentioned, is what I was looking for. I bought the white version because the face of the Vice after just a few games started to show little white "chips" which is the primer coat color. The white face won't show up as much on the white. Now some pro was saying the white is "distracting"and wants it taken out of tournaments. Come on!!!!!! What next??
I have that paddle but didn’t take the time to do a full review because it isn’t USAP approved. It hits super hard and is pretty bouncy off the face. It feels soft but is harder to control. Really fun to play with. You can really crank drives and high balls.
They pretty similar and is more of a preference of shape but I personally was drawn to the standard shaped version. It felt so light but still had good power which is a rare combo.
