Diafine is quite a unique developer, in this video I test it out at night using the Lomo LCA-120 loaded with Kodak Tri-X uprated to 1600iso watch the video and see what I can come up with.

I really enjoy your videos. They are informative, and I love your hometown. Being an American, we don't have the history and old buildings you have. I must say, though, every time you have videos of you driving, it freaks me out a bit. I keep wanting you to get on the "right" side of the road.. I hope you have a great holiday season.

I use Diafine for everything, my current batch was mixed in 2018, more Than 5 years ago. I put it in several separate bottles, and top off my working ones from the spare bottles. I use 4 min, I’m kinda lazy with agitation. I use an alkaline fixer. It’s especially nice with Ilford Pan F (shot at 80), FP4 (shot at 200-250) , and HP5 at 800. I shoot Tri X at 1200-1600 when I really need speed. It’s not good for old film I find in old cameras I buy, Diafine will give a lot of base fog, I use HC 110 for that. Ferrania P30 is great in Diafine, tames the contrast. I’ve shot that at 100 with good results but I plan to do more testing to dial it in.

Sounds like you have a rich variety of films that you've worked with and have experience with. I love it. You mentioned that you're lazy with agitation. Do you ever notice that it causes bromide drag if it is left standing with very little agitation?

Martin thanks for making these videos. I'm surprised that you did not use Ilford XP2 or HP5. When I first started out I used PlusX and TriX but then switched the HP5. I haven't developed film in a long time but I am going to get back into it use medium format. In the early 80's when XP2 first came out I bought a bundled package that included 35mm film and developer. I was blown away. Right now I'm going to use an old Kodak Tourist that seems to have a good shutter so I've ordered a couple rolls of Shanghai GP3 in 620. I heard it should be shot at ISO 50. Eventually I'm going to build a 6X17. Thanks again.

You're my man! Just one of the best serious film channels in the planet and I mean it! Now I understand why many have not enjoyed the results with diafine darkroom printing i.e. the problem with the "greys". Everyone mentioned that to get the best results you need to scan your negatives to get better control. Did I interpret this right? I have the Bellini chemistry and it is incredibly easy to use. BTW The very best to you for ..24!
@martinhensonphotography

Yes for darkroom printing there are better developers for that, for scanning it is amazing , providing of course your neg is well exposed, merry Xmas and thanks for taking time to comment

I've used the Bellini version of Diafine, but only with HP5 @1600ISO and I'm very happy with the results. I'll give it a go with Tri-X next as recommended. Merry Christmas to you and all your family.

Thank you Martin for your many helpful videos, including this video. With the intent of making a fresh batch after a year of use, I mixed up my first batch of Diafine exactly 1 year ago this month. That first batch is still going strong, so I'll continue using the original batch. I put the Diafine I will use during a darkroom session through a filter before using it; it's surprising how many small particles I filter out. I've found that Foma Pan 100/ Arista EDU 100 35mm works very well in Diafine.

Thank you for another informative and enjoyable video.. I used a lot of Diafine in my time and still do from time to time - always with Tri-X. It's unfortunate that the price is so high nowadays; it discourages a lot of the younger photographers from trying it out.

Happy Christmas Martin to you and your family and let's hope the new year is a good one. I've recently bought another Olympus Pen for $1 but taxes and shipping made it €34! Still a bargain though. New purchases last week was a nicca 33 that's just about mint but needs the usual CLA and a mint condition Minolta 35 model ii which needs a strip down as it's working fine when warm but the cold makes it stick. I'm sure you will have some cameras in your Christmas stocking. I'm a sucker for rangefinder cameras! All the best.

Hi Martin we used tri x pushed to 1600 or 3200 in HC110 but it gave you grain like golf balls, it didn't matter for the papers, as long as you got the picture. D 76 was the go to for rated processing a good all rounder. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Martin, I'm gobsmacked by the quality of those night images. A tribute to the lens (no weird flares), the metering system AND to your darkroom skills in making the prints. I used Diafine a great deal in the '80s and just slid away from it. On this side of the pond, availability has been an issue for 20 years or more, spotty at best. There's an unopened quart Diafine kit in my darkroom - you've prodded me into action! Will mix up in the morning. Hope you have many delights on Boxing Day and good health in the New Year.

Thank you, Mr. Henson for the video. I think it isn't your first reel about Diafine. Some years ago you had already filmed about it, if I not mistaken. After that I decided to try it and was pretty amazed. It gives really impressive results. At the same time I had some issues with bromide drag and other similar effects on spots where 120 film was wrinkled a bit at loading.

When I was a Local Freelancer since 1970 sometimes I had to go to Billericay Town FC for the Sports Pages and when they had their 'Famous Floodlights' they were so poor that it was 125th @ f1.4 on HP5 rated 1600 and pushed - and then tried the Ilford 'Wonder Film ' XP-1 RUBBISH at 1600 ASA not true you could rate it at that -- DIAFINE was not available in early 1970's -- now I make up my own to a Formula I got but I do get lots of green Stuff in bottom of Part A ! PS -- TRI-X was much better than lIford HP4 then HP5 Much shaper and less grain but the newspapers had contract with ILFORD Ltd ---

Hi Martin, I want to try Diafine developer. I just want to make sure I have this correct. You said do not get any Part B into Part A. It will ruin Part A, correct. It doesn't matter if Part A gets into Part B because a certain amount of leftover Part A will get in the Part B when you pour Part B back into the bottle to be reused. I'm interested in Diafine, not so much for pushing the ISO to 1600 or 3200 but to get ultrafine grain and extreme details in shadows and highlights.
