As usual you represent the Epitome of customer care, going that extra distance to fix things that you weren't responsible for but saw the need for a corrective repair/solution. I am a self employed carpenter that sees this sort of thing daily, missing nails, ETC. I try and close things up the way they should have been left when I open them up! You deserve credit for this, and I thank you for demonstrating character in this video by doing so. An extra nut and washer and some new tape just speaks as to why I'm proud to watch your videos over most others. You are beyond reproach, Thank you!

Thanks for this educational video. I am not mechanically inclined, but using this video, today, I replaced the drivers side power window motor on a 1999 Buick LeSabre. I bought a new motor for $14.99 with free shipping , on line , and the entire job took less than 75 minutes. you saved me $150 to $200 it probably would have cost me to take it to a GM dealership for repair. Next time i see you ,the drinks are on me. Thanks again..

Good to see the circuit's ground itself was included while testing. Other videos, show the test light being hooked to a ground somewhere else that is not in the circuit, ..So warning to all, grounding a test light "externally from the circuit" is useless as you are not testing the entire circuit itself... in addition, the ground and positive side needs a voltage drop test to check if it can hold a load and run the motor. kudos to Eric O for showing us the right way again!

Thanks for the video Eric, helped me properly diagnose a bad window motor in my Taurus! I also appreciate your Windstar story, exact same regulator assembly in my Taurus and the service manual doesn't even properly warn about it... All it says is to ensure that the regulator arm is in "a fixed position".

The first best moment at 15:44, "well that didn't fix it..." The second best moment at 22:27, "I need something to wipe my fingers, we will use the instructions it (China window motor) came with because I do not have a rag..." Another great video! Agree with Brian Richards that your videos in the Auto Repair segment are the best on RU-vid. I did one of those in a Buick LeSabre. The regulator broke but the Buick motor would not fit into a Dorman regulator so we had to purchase the whole Dorman motor and regulator product. Not a quality assembly but it worked.

The last window motor I did was on a Lexus with the anti pinch window. I installed it without" reprogramming" the motor 1st. Well, the car reminded me that I forgot. I was testing the window before putting everything back together. When the window went up, the anti pinch made it come back down a couple inches and my hand was in the wrong place, lol. It gave me a nice cut. Thanks for the video

Great job explaining the diagnosis and with the video overall. I will follow the procedure as I do a rear door on my '92 Park Avenue (250,000 miles) tomorrow. Had the car since it was three years old, replaced the main switch a couple times but have not had to replace a window motor so far. (The original engine runs like it did when I got it in '95 with 30K miles and does not need oil added between changes. It was built before plastic intake manifolds and general cheapening with the later models.)

Good video Eric, your story reminded me of my son giving me a hand some years back on a 87 Honda accord. Driver door window, he started tacking every nut and bolt loose, when he pulled the motor the spring came unwound hit he window and shattered it. Needless to say instead of making money I went in the hole on that one. those springs are not easy to rewind. Thanks for your time and effort. always enjoy your videos.

You don't have to apologise for your attitude, I think you showed great restraint getting the reflector out and re-assembling the trim. That would be the sort of thing which would send me over the edge and the reason I've had my cassette deck just sitting in pieces for the last three months. I've got to find a real zen moment to replace the belts and put it back together again. There's this one moment where you have to get the door through the chassis, hook up a spring and engage a gear (so it opens slowly when you press the button after) which requires three hands and one of those can't be bigger than that of a 12-year-old. Good thing I won't have any toddlers running around or be on camera as I suspect the air will be a distinct colour around here when I tackle that job.

Hi Eric! Love your channel. Been following for just a little while and binge watch your vids, Haha. With this one, the only additional thing I would have done for this repair is test the motor before ordering one. I would have isolated the old motor outside of the door and tried to activate it. It could have been something in the mechanism of the sliding window, maybe being bound up or something, not the motor. Your method of troubleshooting in all of your videos is great! I love how you don't make more work for yourself by simply troubleshooting the easiest and most logical thing first. Great job, man.

Patrick Vest A lot of motors will work out side the vehicle with no load on them but will not work under load. The classic starter bench test is a good example of this. Just because it makes noise and spins doesn't mean it is good :)

Damn. I have a 1997 le sabre. My driver window stopped. I took the door panel apart and verified the motor wouldn't work. Took it off, called the buick dealer and they had one in stock for like 240 bucks! I was in a hurry so I drove to the dealer. He pulled out the part and it clearly wasn't the right one. The motor looked like a mirror image of what I needed. He checked and checked, I showed him what I pulled from the car, and he said, well, that is all he has. Damn. On a whim, on the drive home I pulled into Pep Boys and they had one for 69 bucks! It was perfect. The only difference is the GM part had more metal in the motor and coil housing, while the PeP boys version had more plastic. I have had it now for 6 years, so I be happy. I know from past experience how GM gouges people that buy parts from them, so just be forewarned

Nice video Eric, those regulators are so painless to replace (unless you loose your skin) compared to the cable and plastic clip design. Great use of the instructions as workshop rag. As far as wiring diagrams go, here in the UK we are very limited, Autodata or Autovista and they both have a lot of holes in the coverage, when we are stuck we pay the daily subscription to the dealer site and print off what is needed.

For diagnosis, have someone operate the switch on the driver's door, and then bang the rear door. If it starts working, it's likely the motor. Those switches don't like dust. Mine get full of saw dust and quit working from time to time, so I clean them out and then use dielectric grease. I know that's not the best diagostics, but if you don't have the electrical equipment and don't know how to use it, this tip might help you do it yourself and save some cash. Mine has sheetrock screws holding the panels on, as I recall.

I use some 3M Spraymount 77 for putting the moisture barriers back on door panels. Apply it to both surfaces like a contact cement, let it set up slightly tacky and put the barrier back on. Holds like a charm and it's removable if you need access in the future.

I hated those kid safe windows. Never felt right when I was in the back seat. Had a 91 Ford Probe, the passenger window kept getting stuck. Turned out the motor/regulator was a fortune to replace so my mechanic just stuck a screw in there to keep it rolled up. Mostly I drove alone so it wasn't a huge deal. Then one day the driver's window ZOOMED down into the door and refused to come out and play. Lived with that for months until I tried to beat a monster storm home from a friend's house 13 miles away. There was a 1/4” of water in the back seat foot wells. The inside of the hatchback was wet. The storm stayed with me and stopped raining when I hit my driveway. I was as wet as if I'd fallen in the pool. After that I found the $300 or so to get that window fixed.

I want to start out by saying thanks for your video! Having the wiring is awesome, only note: @ 5:30ish sec; If you want to test the main switch you want to unplug the switch in questions. This will isolate the grounds, off the Hot wire you should get 12V off the 2 wires in the wiring diagram that are going to the main switch. If you leave everything plugged in it is possible to find ground to all the wires through the motor and still have a bad main switch. Love your videos just thought I would throw that out there, keep doing what you do!

The door panel not being re-installed properly following the last repair (You showed "Someone having been in there before") could have been the very issue that caused the motor to burn out. The lip could have been providing unnecessary friction which, over time, put too much strain on the motor

Place an Amp Clamp around the battery cable(s) and measure current as the switches are manipulated. No current indicates an open circuit that can be isolated further. More current on one motor relative the the others indicates something binding in the motor or door assembly. This can then be followed by Voltage checks at the motor. Quick and relatively easy.

Well done, you explain things so good . $800 a month for health care , wow. I have to pay a health care premium as a Canadian as well but it's $1000 a year. If your under I believe $25k income you pay very little to none and as you make more it goes up to a max of $1k a year. This is the first time in my life a price for something was more in America than up here. I find American politics quite confusing regarding health care, ok really quite confusing on everything Ha. I always found it amazing you had millions of people without health care and now it's a bad thing they now do have health care. Before Obama care you did not pay $800 a month ? , so what would happen if someone got sick without health insurance ? Can't figure out how providing health care to citizens is a bad thing as many politicians are willing to reverse if elected. Canada vs. America , apple and oranges I realize that but man that's real difficult to make a living when you have to pay almost $10 grand for health care. You , Vanessa , and the kids would all make great Cannucks :)

***** ha it is thru general revenu as well as a premium in Ontario. Its call Robin Hood taxation - take from the rich and give to the poor. We got a whole lot of slugs up here that sit on their ass collecting welfare bleeding the system dry. I dought we will have the health we enjoy for long with the slugs we have. As an autoworker it just pissed me off paying $400 a week tax for slug bait :)

Steve Rob Its very simple. You DON'T need healthcare insurance to see a doctor. You can save up your money and pay for medical treatment as you need it. If you only get a cold once every three years then why pay for insurance that you don't use? Pay as you go is more rational for healthy people. If you have health issues then insurance is the way to go. BTW under US laws NO ONE could be denied health care before Obamacare anyway whether you could pay for it or not. Homeless people still get the same treatment as wealthy people even though they don't pay for anything, Why? Because the hospital eats the costs and charges the rest of us more to pay for those free riders. BTW Robin Hood Taxation is against the American Ideals (at least that's the way it used to be).

These motors were prone to having the insulation melt and run down onto the motor brushes thus isolating them from the commutator.

You'll wish it was 'only' $800/month if you ever have to actually visit a hospital. You'd be adding 2-3 more zero's to that figure. Example: Just an ambulance ride to the hospital was $24K+. That didn't include anything the hospital did after that. Total bill was into 6 figures. Hopefully you never have to use it,but you'll be damn glad to have it,if you do.

One thing about working Saturdays is there's less people around to hold you up and get in your way. I really don't understand why the U.S has such a dysfunctional healthcare system. Canada has universal healthcare, here in the UK we have a socialised system which is fairly bureaucratic but its cheap and you don't have to worry about bills or insurance paperwork from it. Australia has a quasi public/private mix which is cheaper and more effective than the U.S system. New Zealand has a semi private but heavily subsidised system. Generally the other 4 Anglo nations spend between 9-10% of their GDP on health but the U.S spends like 17% of its GDP on health for outcomes which are similar. Everyone should pay in for some basic level of care, anyone can be in a car accident or get run over or lose a finger at work or have a kid break a leg. These people turn up at accident and emergency anyway. But Obamacare from what i see basically just mandated people have to pile more money into this corrupt insurance based patchwork system stuffed with bureaucracy. The legislation specifically banned any efforts at cost control like buying cheaper generic drugs. This was magically supposed to lower ballooning costs?

zoidberg444 I have a unique view on this from personal experience. I'm probably close to being a millionaire, at least according to my financial advisor. When I got laid off from my job in 2009 I went on what in America is called COBRA for 18 months which is the max amount of time that you can do this. Basically, I was financially set for life with one MAJOR EXCEPTION. If I got sick I went BANKRUPT since I could not get any heath insurance coverage because I had a preexisting condition: High Blood Pressure. I could not buy coverage for any price. My entire financial future was hanging in the balance. I applied for jobs based exclusively on if they had good heath insurance or not. I didn't need the money, and really didn't want to work, but, I needed heath insurance. Problem is that between 2009-2012 nobody in America was doing any hiring so I was screwed. OK, so Obamacare comes along and I now have heath insurance. I pay $649.46 a month for a platinum plan (just for myself) and I'm loving it. Now, If I need a triple bypass the most I'm out is $2,000 which I could probably find in my sofa. SO I LOVE OBAMACARE. Now it is true that Obamacare sucks in multiple ways. Single payer, like Medicare, was CLEARLY superior to the mess we ended up with but the money boys in the healthcare industry weren't going to let that happen. It's a horrible compromise but having healthcare vs. NOT having healthcare is night vs. day. Take that from somebody who's been there.

+zoidberg444 When he said 800 bucks per month (was it in this vid or one of the others?) I was like "wtf?!";. We have the socialised version of healthcare too (I';m from Europe btw) and it's cheap and always there when you need it. Like 15€ per month. Or 30€ if you go all out. I think in US they wanted to do something similar but it got lost somewhere along the way I guess.

When you were testing the window switch, were you connected to both grounds to light up the test light? Or did you clip the test light to the power wire and probe the ground when operating the switch?
