Here is how you can diagnose an engine that is running rough and is having a misfire, burning oil, running too lean or too rich, has advanced timing or a bad oxygen sensor and other diagnosis by simply looking at the spark plug.

Good to hear, my spark plugs have some off that white deposit on my spark plugs, but my scion has about 250k and that Toyota engine is known for burning oil. Going to change the plugs and see if the p0302 goes away if not I’ll replace the coils too.

When I was changing spark plugs way back at 30,000 miles (and the ignition 'points') I looked at the condition of each spark plug. Now in 2023 I have almost forgot about them! Thanks for the video

So I did a compression test today on my 1995 VW , 184-190-185-185… engine looks good , checked spark plugs after watching this video , my plugs look good no bad gap but I do have the carbon look on all 4 of them .

Way2go sparky😁If I may, the insulator, beside the internal resistance, their integrity also worth regarding. Even if notice a fine dark line that can't be cleaned likely indicates a crack that will get noticed under operation. Careful removal & installation, with cleanliness, also concern for ignition system components because HV will find any break & deterioration along with any dirt oil fluid smudges.

Great to see that you have started loading content regularly again. Am I the first to ask about the Audi sleeper car? Wondering if that biturbo is making silly power. Also figuring though the farm may have caused a dip in funds while getting the infrastructure up to OCD standards, and maybe you're just enjoying the car as a driver not a racer. Do you need to decarbonise or clean the engine some way if you find you have been running rich for longer than you realised? Resulting in inside tail pipe is black, so O2 Sensor likely also coated and catalytic converter probably also started to be affected. Do you run some kind of cleaner through the system? Or just clean what can be accessed and hope highway driving cleans the rest?

Very nice video; keep up the good work I have a Honda Car with 1.3 IDSI engine having 8 spark plugs. The engine is powerful but the only center two spark plugs get really black after one week driving. I replaced old park plugs with new NGK spark plugs but the problem is same. Can you kindly guide which is causing this issue?

Iridium plugs are hard to figure if they're worn or not.

Most mechanics would replace based on mileage. Around 80,000 miles I'd say is good enough. The more it wears the harder your ignition coils have to work. Also make sure your plugs are also fiscally ok, the ceramic has to be intact and the gap has to be correct.

Quick question off topic.. I changed my speed sensor , speed odometer and tach was working fine , unplugged battery to do the spark plug change and when I started the car again my speed needle js jumping on 0 and my rpm needle won’t move again.. any idea why?

How about if the piston ring is clogged and not recycling the oil, wouldn't that cause oil in the chamber and ultimately on the spark plug? How could we tell that's the problem?

Spark plugs covered in oil can be caused by a leaking valve cover.

Please i bought this spark plug 16r-u11 90119 01164 which is recommended by toyota for 2nz-fe engine but when i checked the gap between the electrodes it was 0.37 inches instead of 0.43 Please is it going to have a negative effects on the engine? Also i want to know what it means when water comes from the tip of your exhaust pipe.

what if i found oil in the all the spark plugs, mostly in cylinder 1, no smoke; cleaned it out, replaced sparks, and it never happened again? 2010 mazda 3, use to have starting issues from a bad battery cable so i think i had to gas it a bit🥲 stopped doing that after a week of having it

on my other car, 09 impala ss..... mines was heavy burning oil ... a quart every 500 miles because of the active fuel management i was changing plugs every 3000 miles or so. i bought a tune and turned it off and havent had a problem since

In my case my wonderful car WAS the family car before it got handed down to me. & I wanna keep it going. It has way over 200,000 miles. More like 262,000 literally all 4 of my spark plugs came out white & just burns the oil... So in my case "it is what it is" & I bought new ones at autozone. Denso brand 9$ per plug so like 40$ for 4 new spark plugs.

I changed mine in my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7 liter it took me 4 hours. The gap on a new plug for my vehicle is .045". The burned up ones where Champion Copper Plus the gap was around .065"+ . The new ones I put in are Champion Platinum spark plugs the gap new is .045" and that's what there where factory gaped to. The MPG's have gone up to 21-23 MPG's at 55 mph on flat highway. The old ones I was getting more like 17-20 MPG's.

I remember the day with leaded gas, after doing some highway driving your tail pipe and plugs would have a whitish look to them, today's unleaded gas burns cleaner and doesn't require spark plugs to be changed as often, currently driving a '64 Merc 352CID {all original} and use a lead substitute to help protect the valves

Great video!!! A spark plug in my 2010 Honda Odyssey is oil-fouled, and the dealership says it's probably the piston ring, because it happened again just after 9 months it was previously fouled. I just want to keep it running for the next couple of months until I trade it in for a new care.... Can I just get the one spark plug replaced, just to keep it running for a few months?

Enjoy your work. Have misfires on Cadillac Northstar. 2 plugs were "clean" but head gasket combustion test was negative. Compression test? Leak down? Thanks

I have been getting a code that goes back and forth from random misfire to cyl #3 misfire. Recently replaced rotor, cap, plugs and wires and still have the same problem. After those new parts, I found what looks like a black lightning strike on the cyl #3 plug. The strike mark is on the porcelain where the part # is. Compression seems to be close or with little variation (by my understanding) between all 6 cylinders. The highest compression on 4 of the cylinders is 183 lbs. The lower pressure on 2 of them is 175 lbs. which includes cyl #3. Does that black strike mark imply any particular source or cause of the misfire ? PS: Thank you for all your videos. I really appreciate and enjoy them.

This is helpful, I think it helps me understand what I found. 2020 Mustang 4 cylinder, 18K Miles. First few oil changes free from the dealer, decided I wanted to take over maintenance myself so completed my first oil change the other day. The next day I pulled the four spark plugs to replace and was horrified to find oil dripping from the threads on second plug from the back. I didn't think oil could be actually getting in when the engine was running because the car had been running fine, so looks like I must have overfilled oil despite being so careful. Now my question is, can this result in long-term damage? The car seems to run all right and I haven't seen any smoke out the tailpipe, so not quite sure where I stand.

I changed my plugs in July and checked them 5 months later and the driver side looked like they still brand new. 2012 chevy silverado. I'm using bosch platinum I can't figure out if my injectors are blocked

Cars made after 2005 have way too many ridiculous sensors and are way too difficult to diagnose properly even for professionally trained mechanics. What mechanics do today is they just replace every possible component and foot an enormous bill to the consumer. Learn how to use a OBDII scanner and troubleshoot the error codes yourself troubleshoot car problems yourself. Even without an OBDII reader one can also troubleshoot car problems themselves by eliminating problems step by step, slowly and methodically. The more a person can troubleshoot their own car problems themselves the better they get at maintaining their own vehicles, thus saving themselves thousands of $$$ in yearly automotive repair costs. Most garages today will not let any person walk away from their service centre without a minimum $3000 service bill.

Mine just came out and are a little orange but not bad or black. I have been smelling some oil but no smoke when starting. And the dipstick pretty much remains full. Could it be the valve cover gasket sprk plug seals? They were changed.

Denso Long Life iridiums. 165K but still look and measure all right. Car starts easily and runs smoothly. Should I replace them?

If those plugs have 165k on them you'll probably get your money back in improved gas mileage so I would replace them. GL

Also if you have oil contamination on threads you could have worn valve cover gasket
