In this video: I picked up an old Marin that had these "sticky" Altus shifters on them. I'll show you a quick way to diagnose and fix what's wrong with them.

Thank you for making this video. It's very well done and i appreciate the time it took. Understanding design helps a lot. I partially disassembled left side 3 speed shifter of an Altus ST-CT90 and tried various chemicals and lubes until pawl loosened up. It worked! Fortunately, I didn't have to do a total breakdown because I could not figure out how to remove from cable. I learned that loosening cable from derailleur gave me room to work, but it was awkward. I needed to remove mechanism from case. Problem was, after reassembly, gear indictor was off. (I still have other side shifter to do.) Two questions 1. How do I detach cable from shifter so I can work work comfortably? 2. How do I reset indicator? Thanks again.

Oh intereting. I've not seen that specific shifter before. Looking at Google images the cable should just pop out the hole on the outboard side of the shifter when the shifter is in the lowest gear for the front shifter or higest for the rear. As for reseting the indicator. I'm not too sure, sorry! I'd have to strip one down and take a look.

Well done, must have been old hardened grease on the pawl shaft.

For an internal part like that (one you wouldn't service that often as deeply, like shifters) I'd use gear oil for lubrication rather than a thinner or dry lubrication like silicon or white lithium grease spray.

They are called "c" clips. Next you're at the dentist ask him what he does with his old tools I have my late fathers who was a mechanic they help a lot for small situations. Keep up the good work😎

I have fixed a few like this however never took the pawl off. Maybe next time I will try it. I usually just use pb blaster on a q tip and most of the time that frees up the pawl.*EDIT* Not sure about using pb blaster anymore as it may damage the plastic. Switched over to wd40 and that seems to work...that or dish soap and a brush. I did remove the c clip from a shifter the other day however I put shifter in a ziploc gallon bag in case it went flying.

The little clip is a circlip, they come in four different types both internal and external. I have the exact same set of shifters and no matter what I did with them the seven speed slips! Maybe mine are worn out? But this style of shifter has this common problem, the grease oxidises over time and acts more like a glue. Have a think about this for an alternative to Phil Woods tenacious oil, miller oils semi fluid grease! Designed for vintage sealed gearboxes, thicker than oil so it doesn’t run but thinner than grease so you can put it in a little bottle and use like oil and it’s a fraction of the price of Phil Woods oil 😉

Soak in wd40 or gt85 whilst operating trigger. I had a spring pop out of its housing which was tricky to fix, but worked well in the end

Asa mechanic pretty much as soon as we saw these we knew what the issue was on the repair. This repair is great on a personal bike you want to keep original but a new set of shifters would be cheaper for a repair.

Nice, enjoyed thank you. What solvent do you recommend for these. 'Tenacious' oil appears to be expensive stuff. Is there a recommended alternative/type of grease that would be suitable ?
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 3 года назад
It is expensive yeh! I’m looking for an alternative to use myself. For solvent... brake and clutch clearance in an aerosol is awesome. As with all solvents though it’s not good around rubber.
