Diagnosing a Misfire & Lower Power on 2018 Honda Accord 1.5 Turbocharged Engine P0304

Bernie visits a local shop to help diagnose and fine the cuase of an engine misfire on a 2018 Honda Accord with a Turbocharged 1.5 liter engine. The fault code P0304 freeze frame data shows a misfire at light load at about 3800 RPM. Freeze frame data is integral to this diagnosis, showing when the misfire occured and possible causes. Next, live data points Bernie toward a fuel injector issue, it showed short and long term fuel trim taking away fuel, with a total fuel trim of -17.9%. Bernie uses eCOP ignition pickups to analuyze ignition waveforms, identifying carbon tracing on the spark plugs. This leaves Bernie having to find the cause of the carbon tracing on the spark plugs. This particular Honda engine has coil fired GDI fuel inejctors, so they can be drop tested like port style fuel injectors. Bernie uses his eS COPE to activate the injectors to test fuel pressure drop and faulty drop amounts are found. The vehicle will need new fuel injectors as well as new spark plugs (due to carbon tracing) to remedy this misfire.

2018 Honda Accord EX-L 1.5 73,300 miles. Just came back from the dealer. Started with christmas tree lights (every warning light) going off in the car. Thought it was a bad battery, bought a battery wasn't that. Misfire on cylinder 3. Blown head gasket with a possible leak or deformed engine. They recommend buying a new engine at a cost of around $10,000.00. Went down an internet rabbit hole and it seems that the problem is quite major with thousands of posts all over the internet. The problem is believed to be making the engine more emissions-friendly to deal with government ratings; what they didn't foresee was the gaskets couldn't take the pressure. I contacted Honda GoodWill and seeing what they say, I'm not holding my breath. I've owned 1998 Honda Civic, 2009 Honda Civic, 2013 Honda Accord, 2016 Honda Accord, and 2018 Honda Accord...it's looking like this will be my families FINAL Honda.

I work at a Honda dealership. Injectors get replaced at an alarming rate. The manufacturer has a workflow of parts replacements in their troubleshooting. I am literally the first technician at this dealership to own and use a Picoscope. My test for misfires allows me to observe all of the things you have done in this video. One thing I would like to suggest is that you can capture high pressure fuel system sensor voltage and monitor fuel pressure drops during normal injector activity and compare among cylinders. You don't need to open the fuel system up at all and you can do this while the vehicle is running.

Should I stay away from these 1.5t engines? It’s time to buy a new car, but my 2012 Si with 160,000 miles, k24 engine has never had a single issue and I’m scared of these new ones.

@@thomasengel1459 You do you but I don't think they're great. Injector problems, massive carbon issues in the intakes and on the intake valves. Fuel injector problems that repeat themselves. And we still haven't really had a chance to test the longevity of the turbos themselves.

​ @GooE Can you please provide you workflow test procedure. I have an advance scanner and scope, but don't have ability to flow test these GDI injectors. Got a 2018 Honda Accord 1.5L with P0301. Its a slight miss at this point, don't have carbon trace.

You are the best!!! The dealership wanted to charge my customer $500 to replace the new spark plugs and Ignition coils that were only a day old. They told her that they were not of good quality, and that might be the problem. When I suspected all along that it was the fuel injectors. But she was out of town when it set the misfire codes. My 2018 Civic EX-T recently had the fuel injectors cleaned just as routine maintenance at 77,000 miles. I’ve also replaced the spark plugs at 68,000 miles.I’ve never experienced any misfires but better safe than sorry. Car drives as smooth at 88,300 miles as when I drove it new.

100,000 miles and I’ve never done anything except inspect my plugs and cylinder. Quality fuel should be all you need to keep your injectors misting.

Sure did learn something new, and this information will definitely help me out with the similar issue on a 2018 accord that just got dropped off. As you mentioned they have change plugs and coils to get the issue right back after a few days. Definitely would want to take some classes from you.

That what happen to my 18 accord sport . All the lights came up on my dash like a Christmas tree . Took it to the dealer and they wanted 4K to replace the injectors . My accord barely hit 60k miles and was out warranty . So I bought the injectors from the Honda parts department and had them replaced and it fixed my issues . Sold the car right away . The car also let me stranded multiple times in the freeway when it had that problem . The car would just shut off .

My 2018 Accord 1.5T just had a fuel injector fail at 58k error code P0172 (posted on my channel). Modern Honda look amazing but once the 3yr/36k warranty expires you're on your own and you have no idea how expensive modern Honda engines are to fix. Oil changed at 80%, Shell regular used 80% of the time, always did warm up the car in the winter. Dealer so out of touch they recommended brake fluid replacement at 30k. I've never seen this part fail in ANY of my past cars. When asked why the injector failed so early Dealer said they see them all the time and cost of replacement is $1600-$2500 (must replace all 4) and the new injectors warranty is only for 12k/12mos! I was in love and bought the 1st Accord on the lot with series ending in -0001 but when I made a case with Honda to see if it could be part of a bad batch all I got was the VM of the case manager for weeks on end. I fell for all the influencers stating this Accord was the best in it's class.

haha, GDI turbo charged is something Scotty was ALWAYS against. 2017 and below Accord without turbo NEVER had these kind of problems.

If nothing had been replaced, any shop would have not caught this unless it was fixed temporarily and returned, then we would have looked elsewhere for the real problem. The same can be said why were the injectors dirty to begin with? Bernie may have solved half the puzzle but it is possible that the fuel is dirty or filter, he got consistent numbers when pressurizing but it could be a low pressure number for this GDI system. Cars can be complicated sometimes.

A question here. I can see that cyl #1 being lean, it's easier for the spark to make its way outside and create the carbon trace, but how is it that #4 which was the richest of all four (I presume since it had the largest pressure delta) suffered from the exact same symptom?

Well this is an odd one. 2018 that appears to be in showroom condition. Has had multiple plug / coils from another shop but not one but 2 new plugs carbon track. Carbon tracking is usually caused by very worn plugs on higher mileage vehicles exposed to dirt moisture etc. Intro has fuel trim error on scanner but freeze frame trims are normal. What am I missing here?

So the lean a/f ratio must be causing a rise in ignition voltage which ultimately causes the plug to carbon track, correct?

2017 Civic Hatchback Sport CVT. 191,000 miles troubled free on original spark plugs. Amsoil signature series, 91 octane always used, on 4th set of tires currently. Honda makes great cars, these engines need 91 octane and oil changed every 5,000 miles.

91 octane..... no they don't. If it's a sport model, it recommends it to meet the advertised HP but it adjusts the timings to prevent knocking if you put 87 in. Most of the models tell you 87 is recommended. You lose at most 6 - 8 HP by not using 91. If you drive an Si.... maybe you can justify it a little more (barely) but with a Type R yes... then you should use high octane. Civics and Accords are low HP, are you seriously coming on here pretending you know anything about cars because yours has lasted 191,000 because you used 91? No... in fact those spark plugs should have been replaced 1000s of miles ago and would cost far less then the extra cash you spent on 91 gas.... The oil at 5k yes, you are right there. Fuel injector cleaner every oil change at your next gas fill up is how you keep the injectors clean... not wasting money on 91/93 every fill up on a fuel efficient car lol.... High octane is for high horse power, do some research.

I'm not a certified mechanic, I do know how to read instructions. I recently changed out the plugs at 196,191. They look good. These 1.5L turbos need 91. I have not had any fuel injector issues. Yet....

Injector 4 is flowing more fuel and making rich condition. Fuel is taken away and 1,2,3 goes lean. 2 and 3 have better flow than 1 . But 1 has very poor flow and is going extremely lean judging by the ignition waveform. This car needs advanced diagnostic approach. The DTC for cyl 4 is based on crankshaft speed not going fast enough after power stroke on cyl 4 and ECU is seeing this through the Crank sensor. but still i don't know why there's carbon track on spark plug for cyl 4. since this is rich cylinder. Maybe before the DTC was for cyl 1 and mechanic swapped spark plugs. And put carbon track plug from 1 to 4. And then the original plug from 4 got carbon track also because of severely lean cyl 1.

I understand the misfire code generated by the carbon tracked plug what I don’t understand is the scoped lean condition and the normal fuel trims. I’d be curious to see how the car runs w/ just the plugs replaced. If a single injector is flowing more or less fuel shouldn’t the O2 report & adjust the fuel trims? Nice tool but honestly how many techs take a test drive w/ a scope?

Lean doesn't mean not enough fuel. Lean means too much oxygen in the exhaust stream. Fuel that flows at the proper rate, but doesn't atomize properly, can show a lean condition simply due to incomplete combustion.

Hey I had the code 40420 show up a couple of days ago and than it the check engine was gone two later, the next day the p0304 code came on while driving and check engine light was flashing and car seemed like it didn't want to accelerate, cut the car off went to clock in came came back drove around the parking lot with no problem, what could it be

My 2018 Accord 45K on it started with a slight miss fire when cold then every dash light came ABS TPMS and all safety features stopped working. After several trips to the dealership it needed all the injections replaced. Honda paid for 80 percent of it. I think I could see all the warnings lights lit on this car too. But yes you are on top of your game, congrats.

GDI engines are garbage in terms of reliability and longevity and ease of repair. But they have good economy and power for the first 30k miles! :)

Judging by the high spark line we know there is a lean condition. It's probably safe to say the injectors are restricted. But why was the vehicle subtracting fuel? Usually with a restricted injector the fuel trims will be positive.

An poor combustion event will flood the exhaust with unburnt fuel and crowd the O2 out of the exhaust, tricking the ECU into reducing fuel, you just have to remember that O2 sensors are measuring the absence or presence of oxygen. The ECU will reduce fueling to try to bring O2 levels back up.

Some fuel systems have a schrader valve on the rail, on others you have to tee in, you have to get pretty creative sometimes.

Question; toyota uses port injection + Direct injection. This seems to keep the intake valves cleaner, great. But If this honda would have had both port and direct injection would the problem have not been as severe?

The question is not about the technology used but the reliability of the suppliers injectors. It has nothing to do with what kind of injection system used.

I wish I had you around to teach me! I had this issue in my 2018 accord about a year ago and had honda replace fuel injectors and coils and a few other parts ( I had to do plugs) but a year later I can feel the car starting to lose power and after the 1st time around I know all the signs EVERYTHING I went through for months and all the research I did to figure it out TELLS me these symptoms are arising again.I need Help good sir and a true technician master mechanic like yourself. I worked hard for this car and i commute i need this car to last..What state are you located in?

It never hurts too pull a plug to see what shape it’s in. Get some info on what the plug is trying to tell you based on what it looks like and go from there. Maintenance and documentation is always key and doing this small test can let you know how the rest of the car is performing.

oddly enough, i have run into this aswell on a 2018. I didn't have all the fancy tools though. No way to test injectors (at least that was what I thought before I saw this). I simply eliminated all other possibilities. I have alse had a set of GDI injectors that were all equally restricted (yes, i didnt believe it either), so the drop test was misleading.

Does someone know what can be wrong with my car if it's suddenly just losing power while driving (normally at lower speeds, it has happened many times that way what I'll remember), If I give it gas and push down hard on the gaspedal, it increases the speed and it goes back to normal. This happens intermittent, which sucks. I used my scantool and got the code - hall effect switch low voltage. Can this cause my symptoms?

@@monicaortega8342 Actually yes, both the coolant temperature sensor and oxygen sensor were broken, together with the change of the camshaft position sensor, the car is working perfectly fine now.

How did it feel when you were driving. I have an issue where my car missfires on startup for a bit, like my knock count goes to like 11, then when I drive it will randomly spike to 36, but other than that it drives normal-ish, I wonder if it's the injectors

blown head gasket - leaking coolant into cylinder causing intermittent misfire - that's what is happening in mine - honda reliablility 0 in this 1.5t engine.

@@philh9238 well, I would probably look the injectors up on Mitchell, alldata, or identifix to know for sure. Piezo is generally a bigger and longer injector. Bmw and vw use piezo. What i do know is counting wires to the computer wont help

Honda makes great engines but I knew they were moving to turbos after the 9th Gen Accord so I got a 2016 with the k24. Nary a problem.

I have a honda accord 2016 misfiring under load above 4k rpm (no problem going 6k rpm downhill). It has new spark plugs, new high pressure fuel pump and still the same problem. Codes are: P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, that's all always, it never had the P0087, P0088 or P0089.

Most likely, stock 2018 accords run a long time, modded ones seem to have the issues. And it makes sense

If the cylinders really are lean then why isn't the fuel trim showing lean? His numbers on the fuel trim test were all green and low

My 2018 Accord gave me the same code. Once when I checked myself and once at the Honda dealership. Says cylinder 3 misfire. Yet they still can’t find out what’s wrong with it. I’ve brought it back to them 3 times and the first two times they told me the car was fine. Now, the third time, they are telling me they have to tear down the engine and quoted me $3020. That’s ridiculous. Just for a tear down.

i just did my own code scan, no CEL on it was blinking Loss of power with jerking. Turned off and on it was normal with no CEL! .. Mine says CYL Misfire 3 i ran myself. but not sure how when everything is new & injectors

@@waynethompkins6205 no. Dealership had it for about a month and couldn’t figure it out. Said that they had to do a complete engine tear down which would have cost me $3,000. I ended up trading it in. Very frustrating.

The first thing I would have done is open the hood take the dipstick out for fuel smell in the oil and then run your test replace injectors replace spark plugs change the oil

Looking at the video I’ve noticed you have very munch knowledge. My car has been misfiring on cylinder 4. Exactly what this customer states. When the turbo is spooling and hits boost there’s no power. Fuel injectors were replaced. Car still did the same thing. The tech from the dealership said it was spark plugs so he replaced spark plugs and the car still is stuttering under its power. when I accelerate a bit harder, the car stutters as if it wants to stall and just off and when in drive at a stop light, the Rpm’s are looking to read around 680-620 which to me seems abnormal for them to read that low. What should I bring to the dealership ships attention to look at? Mind you that the fuel injectors were replaced the first time last year in April when I got the car because it was a recall on them and now replaced a 2nd time two days ago and now spark plugs were replaced and car still acts up.

2018 Accord Sport 1.5T - got a tune-up at around 98,000 miles. 1 month later, car went into 'limp' mode while trying to accelerate. Check engine code indicated misfire on cylinder 3. Had to have it towed - dealer found it also misfiring on cylinder 4 and determined it was a defective spark plug since they had just replaced all of them. 1 month later, did the same thing. Took it to a different dealer and they put a camera into each cylinder and found that cylinder 3 and to a lesser extent cylinder 4 were dirty. They are saying that head gasket is leaking coolant into the cylinders and recommending cylinder head replacement.

I honestly think they will cost more in Super Unleaded and frequent oil changes but should run ok. At least they can get out of their own way. Honda knows how to build these things for low maintenance and durability.

Why don't you contact Bernie . His information is at the end of the video . There could be a shop in your area that has his equipment . That E Scan Elite can do a relative compression test right at the OBD connector and you will know if any cylinders are low or dead . This only takes a few minutes . THEN they can test further . This will also do a Volumetric Efficiency Test the same way . Then you know if the CAT is clogged and the MAF sensor is functioning properly . They can get a lot of data in a short time . An hour of diagnostic time by a shop that is trained with high end tools may be money well spent . The dealer may want to sell you a new car .

So what happened here? The #4 injector was flowing too much fuel and the computer sees it and takes fuel away and now the cylinder 1 and 4 are running lean that causing the misfire?

Thats what it looks like to me.that #4 was over fueling and pcm was subtracting fuel from others.thats why fuel trim was in negative. But like Bernie said test results weren't even across the board so need to replace all injectors .

try swapping ignition coils around to see if cylinder 2 continues to misfire, if it does, check for head gasket leak. If misfire moves to new cylinder, replace that ignition coil - it's a very easy thing to do yourself.
