Zombies eat brains. They are also, like all of us, driven by brain functions. What is happening in their brains to make them act as they do? In this intriguing dialogue, Tim Verstynen & Brad Voytek apply the various human medical possibilities that make zombies...zombies.

@SteelGnat
@SteelGnat 8 лет назад
+Jun Jie (AJJ) i think it more of an urge and instink like when your tired you either sleep or drink coffee cost more or less even when their not really alive the virus in the zombies probably need blood or other human intrails to survive since if the body died the virus dies with it
@dudebrogaming8886
@dudebrogaming8886 8 лет назад
Hmmmmmm... I would say that the virus/fungi/bacteria/parasite that caused the disease gave the body some way to create vital nutrients gotten only from vegetation, so it can enjoy an all-meat diet, and that the creature causing it also causes the host to become attracted to... IDK, sweat or blood or skin or something, causing it to be attracted to humans and other animals?
@GregTom2
@GregTom2 8 лет назад
+Jun Jie (AJJ) Two answers: 1) Zombies aren't real, and are a human horror fantasy, thus their reflect the primeval fears of humans (and other apes); namelly, being eaten. Our subconcious doesn't really understands disease so an epidemic that kills a third of the population while a lot more dangerous than a cannibal, doesn't elicit the same reaction as a cannibal. 2) Assuming zombies are real: they don't eat humans, they just try to eat humans. The infection wants the humans to run away and survive the attack, so that the infection can spread to a new host. Since the virus appeared recently, and isn't that evolved, it just triggers an urge to eat, instead of making the host deliver a controled-undeadly-infectious-bite.

I've always wondered, when a person turns into a zombie, does their soul and personality go dormant? Like do they still exist behind the eyes of the monster they've turned into. They have no control over their body but they still exist in their brain? Or does the person just die and everything about them disappear and they turn into a feral beast.

Depend of what type of zombie Dammage are permanent and they're more like hopeless Brain dammage patient, angry hungry walking vegetable The closest thing on earth to a zombie happen in the south east Asia, and the well famous Cordyceps mushroom, a family of numerous species that can infest the body of insect An airborn parasite (no need of contact of biting, just to breathe the spores) We think the host is still aware and conscious of his situation But not in control of their body Then the parasite will slowly eat the host from the inside and sprout out of the head or entire body depending on the case

Funnily enough all the stereotypes of zombies are symptoms of rabies in non-human animals. Human brains may just be too complex to produce zombies, hence why in humans, rabies produce different symptoms...

I'm not talking about what MAKES the skeleton move in this case, I'm talking about HOW it physically does it. Without any tissues, there's nothing to make the joints move, or even hold the bones together as a skeleton.
@CalabusDabus

I'd assume it has something to do with Medulla Oblongata (which controls aggression,) the hypothalamus (which controls hunger,) and the fusiform (which is what lets you recognize faces.)

@woodfur00
@woodfur00 11 лет назад
I think we disagree on what the laws of physics allow. Whatever is going on inside that skeleton, those bones aren't going anywhere unless there's some kind of outside force involved, because there aren't any muscles to contract. I never meant for this to become an argument-I was just pointing out why "something inside the bones of the skeleton" still couldn't make it move.
@aisarete
@aisarete 8 лет назад
So a zombie that walks like this and reacted in this manner would not need to be put down by a head shot, because it's not dead? I can understand it having no pain receptors too. But why does it want to eat people or animals, and why is it transferred through a bite? Or, it CAN be transferred other ways but a bite WILL do it. Why?

@Mailed-Knight
@Mailed-Knight 8 лет назад
+Cameron DaGiant Typicaly Zombies are the resault of magic, mutation or having their mind and soul removed. In other words there is no way to scientificly explain Zombies because they work within rules of Sci-fi or Fantsy. Some 'entertainments' nowadays explain this as being a super virus or mega parasite but these don't really explain the odd behaiviors you just mentioned, especially since it would contrary to the parasites goal to compete with it's fellow horde (that's just an example). Therefore my "diagnoses" of Zombies is that they are an advance force or cannon fodder an alien or possible a deamon invasion. *Gets thrown out of the university* Pretty sure my spelling is awful.

If the bones aren't connected to each other, how does the creature occupy the whole of the skeleton? That's like saying a creature could live with its head and body on opposite sides of the room if it were designed that way. It has to be attached to itself to function, and the bones aren't any more attached from the inside than they are on the outside. I can't believe this is still an argument.
@Amadeo790
@Amadeo790 10 лет назад
so what part of the brain needs to be destroyed for the zombie to die (in theory) I don’t think that a simple shot to the head or impalement would out right kill the zombie if it misses the part of the brain that controls its very existence (a word I am using loosely) or is the brain so fragile that if one area suffers damage from, say a pick axe, the whole brain would just turn to mush?

If you notice, they don't really "eat". Consider, for example, a zombie that had it's stomach blown away. The primal urge TO eat is there, but they don't actually gain sustenance from their victims. (my best guess)

So what causes the eating of the brains?
@InnocentNeuron
@InnocentNeuron 11 лет назад
Imp factual error: patients with pure cerebellar involvement would not explain "stiffness". Its either an ataxic-spastic or ataxic-dystonic gait. Hence, there is either involvement of CST or basal ganglia respectively. Further, the aphasia is likely to be "global". Isolated involvement of arcuate fasiculus will cause conductive apahsia- not in here. So- what are the differentials of ataxic-spastic/dystonic gait with global apahsia ? :-)

I'm also going to throw in toxic epidermal necrolysis, as well as pain asymbolia, possibly caused by damage to another part of the brain. Modern movies often characterise zombies as being the result of some kind of virus, but all things taken in to consideration it seems more likely that it is the result of some kind of bacteria or parasite, considering the route of infection my money would be on bacteria. This doesn't rule viruses out entirely, especially considering the incubation period.

Well, the movement thing is sort of assumed to be because of the effects of rigor mortis. You really did not explain how a corpse-like body is rotting while maintaining some levels of awareness and motor skills. And why do they want to eat people? And how does the disease spread if they eat people, anyways? It never makes sense in zombie scenarios that the disease would spread so quickly with armies of zombies wandering about. It would take a couple weeks for them to be unable to move. And if they actually ate people, there would be nobody to spread the disease, except for those people that only got bitten and somehow managed to escape.

As an adding a disease like this is made out of both biological factors that affect the brain and also pestilent factors that attacks the mind and spirit, that's why some hasty vaccines are dangerous, also Covids are common cold viruses that exist by nature update mechanisms to adapt the new biodiversity. Nature sees the biodiversity, it surveils it and in case of a perceived threat it tries to cure it.
