AC Delco 6K956 Belt: amzn.to/2ApLNDW
This is the third and final video in a series trying to figure out just what this squeak was on my 1995 GMC Suburban. The first video fix was the idler pulley (fail). The second video fix was the water pump (fail but needed to be replaced anyway). And now, this third video fix finally actually fixed the squeak which was just the belt... I have to say a big THANK YOU to you who've watched and commented and clued me in on the belt. Knowing me, I wouldn't have checked that till the very end.

I have a 2001 Blazer with a 4.3 L V6 and the Tensioner Pulley needs replacing. It damaged the Serpentine belt. Called your favorite parts store, OReilly's. Both the belt and Tensioner pulley are warrantied by them. Like you I have never been displeased with OReilly's and they stand in back of their products. Thanks for the video as I had watched both of them and can change the tensioner Pulley Assembly myself and save money.

I know this is 2 years old but I have been battling the same problem that it would only happen when I was cold. Thank you so much for this video. After 3 years of owning my 94 Chevy 1500. I have finally fixed it

Man thanks for your video. Was watching the one on the replacement pulley, noticed you said after it didn’t fix the problem, you said waist of time. No, no ,no brother. It makes it easier the next time. Keep up the great work. Never give up. I have no storage and live in a second story apartment. If you have a garage tear it all apart 😅

Glad you fixed the problem I had the same thing happen but even after I replace a new belt it kept doing it to find out it was a water pump so that's good you replace a water pump also

Glad you got her fixed, that's what I said before. But at least you have a new pulley. Keep the spare belt in the truck because if it breaks on the road you'll need it.

The same happened to me. I had a 5 month old Continental Elite Serpentine belt on my 2001 Land Rover Discovery and it started chirping. A closer look I found frayed wires along the side of the belt in four areas. Replaced the belt with a NAPA/Gates belt and it's been good to go so far after 3 months here in the cold weather of Atlanta at 60 degrees. lol Oh yeah... "Remove Before Flight" key chain tag... Awesome!

Yup , I thought it was something worse on mine and turned out the belt that I had looked good until I took it off and was cracking and stretched. I had changed the idler pulley because it only 14 bucks and did have more spin than the new one so I probably didn't need to do that. But it's amazing that metal sound is from a belt.

Just a little piece of advice: When you are taking tension off of the belt tensioner to remove the belt, have your ratchet pointing between the alternator and the power steering pump. You will get the tensioner to move with much less effort. Thanks for taking the time to post your videos.

I have a 97 Chevy Tahoe 4 x 4 I had the same problem and it turned out to be the belt but one thing I recommend that they recommend it to me before you take off your belt market with one of the pulleys that way you can put it back in the same place and it shouldn’t squeak anymore it’s when you take it off and put it back it’s already mowed it one way that way when you’re market you put it back to the original place

when one of the marks of the marks line up the other will also be lined up. if you are looking front the front of the truck toward the engine the mark being clockwise of the index it means your belt too tight and vice-versa. the current position that your belt is at is almost bottomed out because of that your belt is barely capable of doing any adjustment. I have this in the previous video that belt tension is import because it accelerates wear on your alternator bearings, water pump seals/impeller, and a/c compressor bearing. here is a picture of belt properly adjusted: st.hotrod.com/uploads/sites/21/2013/07/dorman-delete-pulley.jpg

I'm having the same problem with my 97 K1500 5.7, except it doesn't squeak until 1500 RPMs. I didn't think it was the belt because it doesn't have a lot of miles on it (maybe 10,000 at most), looks like it's in good shape, and doesn't squeak on idle. I also put a new water pump, idler and tensioner on. So, along with a new alternator and AC compressor (unrelated issues) all pulleys are new except steering and crank. A week after I finished the water pump, the squeak is back. Found your video, got a sinking feeling in my stomach, and ordered a Conti Gatorback. We'll see what happens when I put it on....

Problem is that new belts have a coating on them that wears off soon. It fixes your noise temporally, but then comes right back.

Get a 2' length of pipe or floor jack handle over ratchet for leverage. Belt length has nothing to do with speed of pulley rotation. Pulley diameter determines that.

@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP
@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP 6 лет назад
Yes, I heard him say that. I also heard him say that he wondered about if the belt length had any effect on rotation. Did you hear him? Click on this *@**1:02* An overdrive pulley will increase rotation- not a belt.

The marks are there to tell you if the damper or tension is bad.. As the damper stops it from bouncing around..
@TonyRomeNewMoney
@TonyRomeNewMoney 6 лет назад
Get a 2 or 3ft breaker bar to help with that tensioner. You need leverage and it will be easy.
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 5 лет назад
I don't disagree with reducing belt length to fit a smaller pathway, and a little more tension from a smaller belt might make a difference in squeal. I'll bite on the notion that speed is faster with a shorter belt. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant? Unless the belt is losing traction with a belt that is too long, belt length should have no effect on alternator rpm. It will be interesting to see if the fix lasts, sometimes belt chirp from lateral movement temporarily improves with a new belt.
@magicnier211
@magicnier211 Год назад
Interesting to note that my new belt retains its outer diameter as compared to the new belt .. But .. on closer look the thickness of the old belt has worn down by approximately 1 mm .. giving unwanted noise

First, soak all new belts in 303 Protectant for 24 hours. Then wipe excess off, and dry with a paper towel. The belt will easily last 100,000 miles. If you take the belt off twice a year, wash it, dry it, then soak again for 24 hours, it can last a lifetime. Trust me, it makes all the difference in the world.

If it help, the noise comes when the weather changes the belt get dry and metal surfaces have oxide. That make the noise. So!!! With engine on spread some water. Or buy the belt moist bar, put with engine off on belt. Its like grease or something. Everything helps.

shorter belt will make alternator spin faster and get more current???
@awkwardturtle9119
@awkwardturtle9119 5 лет назад
No it will not, but the smaller alternator pulley will spin the alternator faster (regardless of what belt is used). Changing the belt size doesn't affect how fast any pulleys spin, only changing the diameter size difference between pulleys will change spin speed.
@theGADGETSplaylist
@theGADGETSplaylist 5 лет назад

I know this is old (so I'll just leave it for informational purposes) but I had the same belt squeak on my 2006 Crown Vic back at the same time frame as you. I put a Goodyear Gatorback belt on and it's still like new. Stay away from cheapo Mexican or Chinese made belts altogether. V-groove belts are notorious for squeaking. Thats why I went with the Gatorback design. I think it's made by Continental now but it's the same design. Continental owns Goodyear and General tire now.

If you don't want to buy a breaker bar to remove the belt, just find a big ass pipe from around the yard and use it for leverage. Fit the pipe over the wrench and pull away. That's all I do and it makes the job simple.
