After Replacing Just about everything in the front suspension on my 2011 Ram 3500 mega cab with only 55K miles I decided to research your video. I replaced ball joint, tie rods, sway bars, shocks, struts, etc... and I still had loose steering issues. I basically showed the dealership your video and after a short test drive with the head mechanic they approved the replacement of the shaft. Well! You just saved my $90,000. and I was able to avoid buying a new truck! My truck now drives just like new, no more steering wander or loose steering. I went ahead and bought my service advisor and the mechanic both Starbucks cards. Thank you a million! Or shall I say, thank you 90,000 times!

Thank you for your insight and advice! Confirmed my thoughts and have ordered a new intermediate shaft. After doing all new tie rods, ball joints, and Redhead steering gear, my truck continues to wonder. 260k on the original intermediate shaft. Just ordered a new Borgeson. This makes me more excited for the install. Thanks again!

Dam I've been l researching problems that my Dodge has been given me. 2016 Ram four-wheel drive flex-fuel V6. I thought it was called a death wobble but after hearing your explaining the wandering bit. That's exactly what's going on here. It makes me look like a drunk driver while I go down the road. Have noticed also when I add a small pothole for shallow or a dip while I'm changing lanes at 65 70 miles an hour the truck wants to sway left and right the back end and the steering gets touchy. It'll make you pucker up real quick. I appreciate the video you posted it's help me start somewhere. Short of replacing this and replacing that right now cash is tight with all this virus stuff. Thanks again hope all is well with you and yours.

Take an old (or new) air hose and cut out a 12" section. With a little WD, slide/spin the air hose over the pin between the inner and outer metal components. Then take a flat edge razor and cut off the hose proud of the outer OD of the shaft. Do both sides and then clamp the shaft with a worm gear hose clamp so the hose pieces can't back out.

When I do that with my steering wheel,…the only thing that moves is the steering wheel shaft and the pitman arm a hair. Looks like the steering box/pitman arm shaft appears to be moving while everything else after that is waiting. For years, my truck used to drive like a sports car,…even with big tires. If you turned the steering wheel like you’re doing in this video, it would fly across five lanes of traffic. Now,…it just sits there. I don’t even like towing with it anymore.

I have little loose steering clunk in between the shaft before of 1st joint clamp and wheel, i can clamp vise grips on shaft right above the clamp bolt, hold it with brake pedal firm and steering wheel would have tiny free spin, no loose shaft in either directions just loose spin...I guess the only connection now i can think of is the one on top with center bolt...EDIT: the pin you speak of in video in my case is nicely tight atm
@Javii96
@Javii96 2 года назад
Did you figure out what was causing that? I think i might have the same issue as you. My pin does move but the clunk is coming from closer to the steering wheel.
@tallll70
@tallll70 2 года назад
@@Javii96 I didn't fix it yet, but i was trying figure out anything else about it, i found out if i don't start engine and and move steering wheel fast in short range left and right, i feel tiny like damped plastic knocks, also if i grab steering shaft in engine bay it has little side play also damped, but i can't see where, it's not in any of the joints or connections visible there, it seems pass the boot in cabin , i did took out steering wheel air bag too see, but nothing loose there and i can't see how to get to anything else in between in column... So yea, the worse thing about this, is i can't easily identify it and deal with it... mine is 2013 the 1st year they implemented electric steering with new parts, my previous 3th gen didn't have this and i would know, because my previous Tacoma had this caused by white plastic bushings warn out in hex steering shaft, that i fixed and these previous problems makes me sensitive on that .... i mean, it's ok i don't notice it all the time while driving, not on road bumps or curbs, just on certain rougher gravel types it's most noticeable
@Javii96
@Javii96 2 года назад
@@tallll70 yea, i did what you said with the vise grip against the brake pedal and it is definitely loose right under the steering wheel. I took all the plastic off around the steering wheel and i clamped the shaft right against the steering wheel and there is play right there. Idk what to replace to fix it but i'm gunna try removing the steering wheel today.

If the bushing slides down on both ends of the shaft,, that would be MUCH better to simply replace the bushing than the whole shaft, wouldn't ya think? So will someone please give feedback, and NAME the fix bushings or the rubber packed one so it can be replaced ...if it even CAN be replaced. THANKS!
