The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Did Diahann Carroll ever have a bad hair, wardrobe, anything day? She was the epitome of a stunning beauty.

She's the epitome of grace and beauty, and a great talent. She broke color barriers, I was a little girl when her show "Julia" was on the air, and many girls of all colors wanted to be her. I was a little white girl in Dallas, TX in the 60s, but I had a "Julia" doll because she was way cooler than Barbie, and had a professional job!

She sure was gorgeous in person, c. 2000, when we got her autograph in the lobby of "The V. Monologues" in NYC!

She just knew that she was black and had to be as close to perfection to make it in the business. They say what it is that you wont do if you want something so bad. Diana was the same way but she just wasn't as good looking and didn't have that same class!

Well, I wasn't the hugest fan of her wardrobe and costume changes when she hosted the Hollywood Palace in 1969 or 70. Otherwise, you're right.

No, she didn’t. She was a pure example of elegance in the highest order. Over & over again voted to the “best dressed” list by critics.

Ms Carroll looks beautiful here, that gown could be worn today and the color is gorgeous. Her singing style is not my favorite but she sure had a presence. I'm not sure she is remembered much as the years go by but she actually was quite an important figure as the 1st black woman to star on her own network tv series.

@The Ed Sullivan Show It would mean a lot to us longtime fans of Diahann Carroll if you can upload Diahann Carroll singing "Yesterday" and "What The World Needs Now" on The Ed Sullivan Show April 10th 1966, It will mark 55 years tomorrow 💖

Did anyone else have a "Julia" doll as a child? She was kind of like Barbie, but prettier and waaaay cooler! She was a nurse, not an bimbo. Looking back at the kind of toys my mom bought me, I think she was a covert feminist and SJW. Thank you, Mom!

They don't make singers and performers like this anymore..Amy Winehouse was the exception in the early 2000s...BUT you cannot compare modern day artists to the likes of Eartha Kitt, Nancy Wilson, Shirley Bassey, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Ketty Lester, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Darlene Love, to name a few...these artists were (are) EXCEPTIONAL and made for the stage.

I love RU-vid, because I've been able to add to my list of favorite performers that I didn't hear growing up. All those you mentioned are wonderful. I just found out about Ruth Brown in recent years, and it makes me mad that I never heard her on radio growing up. Now I can't go more than a couple of days without listening to her. OH! And Sister Rosetta Tharpe and her guitar work that influenced early rock and roll! I'm so grateful that video survived of her performances.

@@LazyIRanch LOVE Ruth Brown..did you know she starred in the original Hairsprays movie in 1988?? Etta James LOVED Ruth. AND Sister Rosetta...wow...you know your artists!

Would you include Diana Ross in this list?
@Dion_Mustard
@Dion_Mustard 3 года назад
@@mattc2094 Ms Ross is a musical legend. I generally prefer the more "gospel" "soulful" singers like Mahalia Jackson, Gladys Knight, Whitney Houston, Patti Labelle, Etta James, Tina Turner. The ones whose voices reach the heavens!!
@LazyIRanch
@LazyIRanch 3 года назад
@@mattc2094 Of course! The original Lady Di! That's why the OP said "to name a few". There are so many, like Gladys Knight, Sara Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston... It really is an almost endless list
