pretty scary how many people have drawn this connection… you are talking to an entity through a black mirror, which in magick terms is called scrying, chanelling another dimension
Scene 5: The dressing room Mephistopheles: Do I intrude upon thy rest? Or would you care to talk? Faust: What I’ve learned through your instruction re-asserts again that big and small are only the two sides to the one coin; and that the elephant-for all his mighty strength- is no different, basically, to the tiny flea. So still I seek the force, the reason, governing life’s flow, and not just its external show. Mephistopheles: The governing force? The reason? Some things can’t be known; they are beyond your reach even when shown. Faust: Why should that be so? Mephistopheles: They lie outside the boundaries that words can address; and man can only grasp those thoughts which language can express. Faust: What? Do you mean that words are greater yet than man? Mephistopheles: Indeed they are. Faust: Then what of longing or affection; pain or grief? I can’t describe these, yet I know they’re in my breast! What are they? Mephistopheles: Without substance, as mist is. Faust: In that case, man is only air as well! Er… [Pauses to look at script] What has made me thirst, then, To be instructed in those things that are more than speech allows? Mephistopheles: Your thirst is artificial, fostered by the arrogance in you; so look no further than all your human brothers do: sleep, eat, drink, and let that be sufficient. Faust: Liar and foul traitor! Where are the pulse and core of nature you promised to reveal? Where? Mephistopheles: Faustus, you lack the wit to see them in every blade of grass. Faust: Vile phantom! Lying fiend! Mephistopheles: Faustus-worm! Dare you rain curses down on me? Now, spite and venom deeper than the sea I’ll vent on you. Faust: I’m learning the Devil knows no more than we poor fools. Mephistopheles: The man who gives his soul to Satan for instruction- I would agree with you: he is a poor fool. Faust: As a guide to higher truths, I really cannot recommend you. And yet, says my contract, signed in blood, you still remain constrained to serve me! Serve me, then. I will make use of your deceptive guile and your Satanic anger. Mephistopheles: Both will I put at your disposal.
No idea how I stumbled across this. I'm not a fan of old literature. Or even reading for the lost part. But I understand this all. And it's deep. And the line at 2:27. Nailed it. Two minutes in to something old and I barely know and I cheered for man facing the devil within.
In that case your beer will turn sour and your blood will run so cold that you will never fully relax again... nor become drunk ever again.. because the stark brutal reality will sober you for life. Such are the displeasures of sin.
I love this scene so much, especially Mephisto’s cynicism and Faust’s frustration The dialogue is extremely clever and the interactions between these two feels so genuine; there’s a sense of dry wit on top of the philosophical discussions that gives a hint of realism to them both And on a more informal note, I could listen to Mephisto’s voice for hours There’s something both eerie and strangely relaxing about it I’d let him sway me and control me any day 💕
My grandmother would have loved this. In the 70's, she was looking for a cure for cancer and bought a bunch of Wiccan items, one of them was a ring with a pentagram in the center. I wanted it, but when she passed away no one told me where it was.
@@abithefallenhuman921 both wrong, a pentacle/pentagram is used in ritual to represent your connection(spirit) to the 4 elements(Earth, Air, Fire, and Water)
@@TheFaustianAlchemist don't know where you heard that from, but your only half right, the pentagram is any symbol that protects against evil, the *Five* (penta) pointed star being the most common, however it does mean other things on top of that. (Spiritual connections being second to its use as a ward.) For instance, in 300 BCE Judaism, it represented Justice, Mercy, and Wisdom.
please can you tell me where I can find the english audio track? I have the the subtitles but have yet to find anywhere I can get this marvel in english
Yeah I've tried them all, they must have took it down in favor of the Czech version. Do you think you could upload it somewhere for download or send it to me if you still have the English dub?
The Devils was a bit mad and I remember Ghosts of The Civil Dead around then, too.Films to watch and experience. Not Saturday evening viewing with the kids.
Are you talking about finding a copy of the actual movie? Or the scene on RU-vid? I don't think they have the Czech version of this scene uploaded on RU-vid.
i gotchu easterneuropeanmovies.com/comedy/lesson-faust (not the whole movie though...) www.ebay.com/itm/Faust-Lekce-Faust-1994-Czech-Jan-Svankmajer-English-spoken-subtitles-OOP-dvd-/273532195022 i think amazon might also have the DVD, aside from that, just use google and then check out some torrent sites and probably just look for Jan Svankmajer's films and shorts and see what you can find. Post results if you find it, good luck. also awesome movie and amazing director, check out his short films, too.
If this was real life, he probably took psycedlic mushrooms and looked at himself in the mirror and seen himself as the devil. Psycedilics does bring creativity and knowledge and realizations.
@@TheFaustianAlchemist ha i agree with your measure of intelligence but you refrain from the data presented. true psychedelics do things, have any other wisdom to pander?
