Welcome to PART 4 of dialogue editing in Fairlight!
In this lesson we explore the Fairlight Dynamics Toolset which boasts four powerful tools: Expander, Gate, Compressor and Limiter.
If you've ever wondered what an expander is for and how it's different than a gate, or how a compressor is different than a limiter, this lesson is for you. It builds on Dialogue 1-3 so if you're brand new to using the Fairlight DAW and/or sound design, maybe watch those first.

Thanks so much for making these item using it as a life raft right now 😂 I’m having to learn on fairlight I’m so used to premiere that moving has been a brain fart

Right on! Happy they’re helping. I really like FL so far. Had mainly used Avid/ProTools prior.

You know it's crazy how many fairlight videos there are and the audio on the videos themselves is awful, this is the first that actually sounds exactly like what I want to learn how to do

Cool. I used to watch SO MANY films at the Cinemark on 71st. Is it still there?!my color grading course will be live in prob April. Resolve does color so well. Also, reach out to me if you decide to look at the school -- I'll give you a special Tulsa discount code. kyler@writedirect.co

I liked your explanation of the expander. I never got that.

It took me awhile for that to click too. Makes sense once you hear it. I see Tulsa in your name. Do you live there? I used to work for a tech company there years ago before moving to LA.

Thank you very much for the video! Everything is concise and clear. This is one of the most helpful tutorials for the Fairlight Toolset in Davinci that I've ever seen. I'm surprised the RU-vid algorithms haven't yet adequately assessed the importance of this video for all film/video makers. And I also really like how your camera is set up; the colors and lights in the studio.

Dang man. Very kind words! Really appreciate your support. I wanted to base all my film school training on Resolve vs products with subscriptions like Adobe or Avid/ProTools. Resolve is so freaking awesome. And combined with their cameras, it’s so indie film friendly. Again, thank you.

Thank you! Not an Adobe user. Have done all my post with Avid, ProTools, FCP, and Resolve. Resolve is now the only thing I use. So much easier than the rest.

@@writedirect thanks then, can we see the same tutorial In Avid?

@@ahmadomedvisuals8205 Avid doesn’t have the same tools. They rely on ProTools. It’s the industry standard but it’s a broken system. I only use and teach in Resolve now.

The tools on DaVinci are just next level. I'm finishing up my first edited short film for a contest and I had to do sound design 😩 (something very new for me). The past few days I've been doing tons of research on perfecting my sound design for the film and used the Write & Direct RU-vid channel with editing my dialogue. This 4-part series is clutch. Too bad I used Premiere 😟, I am definitely using Resolve for all my future projects. I kind of want to throw my audio in DaVinci just to use the Fairlight tab and put back onto Premiere timeline haha. So hard when you are use to a program, but these sound design/dialogue quick courses here are super informative. I am very grateful and as soon as I get a little more dough in my wallet, I am definitely purchasing the Write & Direct Course. Thank you for all this information.

Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated. And yes, Resolve is incredible. Wait until you color grade. :) So glad the training has helped! Posting another dialogue lesson this Friday on EQ.
