We did this at Houston Grand Opera. I had one of the spoken parts. We all of us were on stage the whole time. This production makes a mistake in having the crowd just meander off at the end, as if nothing happened. The trat is stunning, my favorite opera.

In the last days of the Great Terror in the French Revolution, people have seen so many beheadings by the guillotine every day that they may have become numb, weary and tired of it all. For them, it's just another day. And don't forget, if you openly protest against these killings, you may as well end up at the scaffold yourself.

@@anamorphosys85 That's exactly how I see it. According to the accounts, the mob, which had grown used to heckling and jeering as they guillotined people, were silent after they killed the nuns. It was as if they felt ashamed and finally realized it had all gone too far. The Reign of Terror ended shortly after this, which is what the sisters had prayed for. They did not seek martyrdom; but they prayed that if they had to die, it would help end the Terror and restore peace.

In the actual event, Constance was the first to the guillotine, and the Reverend Mother was last. As each sister passed the Reverend Mother, who held the statue, they asked her, "Permission to die?" and the Reverend Mother answered, "Go, my daughter." The chorus is just singing vowels. You are hearing the nuns(soloists). And, btw, the chorus has vastly improved over the last 10 years. It is actually one of the best opera choruses now in the world. I have been an avid opera-goer since 1974. I now live in Europe and have access to many of the houses here, so this is not just civic pride saying this.

@@edwardinderrieden Stealing away the best choral conductor from Chicago did not really help them, despite your impression. An old Met stalwart bass-baritone told me it’s the union. They can’t fire the women when they start to wobble. He also told me about a dress rehearsal of ‘Lohengrin’ where he was the Telramund, and after one of the big choruses the cast spontaneously turned around and stared the singers were so terrible.
