Machining with carbide often means working really tough material and chipped cutters. One end of this double end carbide endmill can be restored by grinding back, the other end is chipped where the damage needs to be cut off and the end angles re-ground. The cut off wheel is a Shars 6" X .045" 100grt diamond. Also, collet chuck extension holders and uses on the tool & cutter grinder.

oh my ....commented before I saw the the part of the the drug addled person, when I lived in Hollywood, I would see persons that really needed help mentally, roaming the streets, it was sad, and this was in the 80's

A group of people came and helped this person off after the police checked him out. I was checking on him in the early morning because I thought he might die. This drug seems to cause people to bend over and put their head on the ground. When I approached he would swing his arms around with his head on the ground! Chloe had him agitated of course.

I actually found a Cincinatti Cutter grinder within driving distance from me for $600 but absolutely Zero tools or fixtures with it. So I figured I should pass.

It might be better to find a good standard work head first, then find a grinder.

One of the biggest problems for me when it comes to inserts, is that there is a bewildering number of types and materials from an equally bewildering number of manufacturers. Many are proprietary and need the same manufacturer’s tooling in order to use them. Being retired, even though I’m not terribly constrained, it’s just impossible to try many of the ones that look to be really good. Some of these things are $30 per insert and only sell in quantities of ten! Sheesh! Oh, the same thing with angle grinder disks. I really want to try the new 3M Cubitron 3 disks, but at $7 per disk in 25 disk package quantities, it’s unlikely. A 6 x 48 belt is $360. I guess my grinder will never see one of those.

The insert tooling now is integrated into CNC programing like Kennemetal and not really aimed at manual machines as the old machines do not meet the speeds and power with a firehose of coolant on the work. So, you enter the material and size, the program gives you the insert choices. Not many years ago the insert makers would have some better indication on packaging such as for aluminum or general purpose, now I have to go to the catalogs to break the codes looking for some buys on ebay for general purpose inserts. I got a hold of a Kennemetal high precision boring head system, the kit had several heads and used different sizes of special inserts that had two edges and cost $40 each! The system worked fine but the cost per hole was huge. I traded that off when I used up the inserts and went back to grinding boring tools again. I never had the production requiring that sort of thing. It is most economical for me to use general insert types and fabricate tools for special shapes, and finish cutting tools on the cutter grinder being able to make changes on the fly.

looking pretty good out there in Wala Wala....been in the 89 degree shop all day [8 hours welding and fabbing] here in Florida, cobbling together a stand for a 3x50x72 inch light box.....vertical..... sweating like a politician on Election Day

Great video. Discovered that Shars diamond cut off wheel months ago. What a deal. Just finished cutting off and rebuilding a 7/8”, two flute, center cutting, solid carbide end mill. What a monumental task! What a tremendous amount of carbide dust even with dust extraction and a M93 mask. Rebuilding the gash alone was one heck of a lot of work. This is not to be taken lightly. Not to mention the tedious task of getting the absolute precision center cutting geometry (just imagine four flute) to equal that of a half million dollar Walter Heliotronic multi-axis, robot grinding center (Jeff Toycen at Cuttermasters tellls me to quit trying to strive for that unattainable accuracy at home, it’s unnecessary). 🙂

Well, I am not in the cutter grinding business, pretty much just need to get things done. I see the same with others such as the mold shop here that closed. There are a bunch out there that do not understand that. So, I get many thumbs down "not seen by the public" and I have bounced the practical machinist forum bully clowns off here as fast as they show up. No one wants to do cutter grinder videos, very low interest for the shake and bake machinist and those that must be entertained. I am going to show my normal routine. That way, I don't run out of content, a few donations make it happen add free, thanks.

I have yet to figure out the whole operation behind my Dawson work head. It has a cam and plates that deflect the head to the right. It can tilt or swivel but not both. While its OEM to the machine I have yet to figure out a single use for it. Dawson became Royal Oak, and the new machine used the same RO collets but the work head has not only cammed tilt like mine, but cammed plunge, as well as swivel and tilt. And there is still no use in sight. I have a Cuttermaster Air Bearing which is actually useful. If i didnt have all the RO collets including the tapers, hex and squares i would pitch it

The cutter grinder attachments are hard to sort out, there were a lot of cam operated heads for taps, countersinks and other tools for relief grinding and not much or anything for instructions. I managed to get by with the standard work head for years. Having the air bearing and the fast setting Rotadex is a real treat, thanks!

I’m old, but I couldn’t understand a word you were saying while cutting that end mill. Question: doesn’t the end mill get vey hot while cutting at low feed rate?
@DonDyarprecision
@DonDyarprecision 3 месяца назад
The endmill grinds cool, this is an antique grinder with low hp the feed is adjusted for that.
