Learn how to make a diamond wood inlay banding. A 45 degree diamond segment is cut on the band saw using a specialized cross cut sled. The triangular segments are cut at a 22-1/2 degree crosscut sled on the bandsaw.
This video is a web & RU-vid original for showing how to make diamond inlay banding. This technique for creating the diamond wood inlay banding is an original idea conceived of by The Apprentice and The Journeyman (Bob Simmons) as are the band saw sleds used in the operation.
There is very little information available on the web & elsewhere on how to create wood inlay banding in the workshop. The Apprentice and The Journeyman offers this woodworking information freely to other woodworkers in the spirit of sharing. Please do not attempt to profit from this work. If you share this information, please inform the recipient of The Apprentice and The Journeyman as the originator of these methods.
Making wood inlay banding is a lost art. After continually studying the works of the Buffard Freres for a long time, it is my desire to share with other woodworkers what has been learned. It is my goal to simplify the process of creating beautiful inlay bandings so that those that accept the challenge can make their own.

Looks like the maple diamonds could be made with the same setup used for the walnut triangles. You just would have an extra gluing step.

Yes, however I would not recommend that. Here’s why. In gluing up those 2 pieces you would have to be super accurate for every glue-up. Not worth it imho. However, keep looking for better ways! The more you become familiar w/ the process, the more you refine it.

If your band saw table is small, consider adding a larger auxiliary table on top. Place a dado in the auxiliary table to accomodate a sled.

I have watched tons of woodworking tutorials since I became interested in woodworking and I wanted to drop in and say yours are truly the most informative and educational that I have watched. I just purchased a bandsaw and I am in the process of setting it up. I had no idea you could do stuff like this with it so I am very grateful that you are sharing your knowledge.

Vaughn, The angles are given on the crosscut sleds as shown in the video. The instructions are demonstrated as well. (watch the video again to learn more.) The dimensions will change according to the size of the wood inlay banding desired. For more information...go to google SketchUp and search for "diamond wood inlay banding." That will give you all the specifics you need for angles & dimensions.

Joseph, Try this woodworking method a try & let me know what you think then. The band saw cross cut sleds are made from (flat) scrap & only take a few minutes to construct. Focus on accuracy & they will serve you well for a long time. A dial caliper is worth its weight in gold to obtain accurate measurements of your material. The Rockler thin rip jig makes for great uniform thin strips. Enjoy the process and thanks a lot for watching!

Hello my friend, The making of beautiful wood inlay bandings is a lost art. Little if any information is available freely or otherwise on how to make quality wood inlay bandings. Few people know how it is done. If a woodworker wants to adorn woodworking projects with inlay bandings, he or she will need to purchase commercial bandings 99.9% of the time. My purpose is to share my experience of creating inlay banding & other segmented inlays. They will be inlaid in time into wood projects. Thanks!

A Wixey digital protractor was used to accurately set the fence at 22-1/2 degrees from the saw kerf. The sled needs to be large enough to handle these cuts.

How Calibrating the bar that holds the wood in 22-1/2 Sled Jig I try but I think it was short demacido surface to slide on the Bandsaw? Please

I notice your white table is it glue proof. I see you like using blue painters tape . I'm trying to learn what glue will not stick too

David, You bring up an important point. It is one thing to understand how to laminate wood properly. It is another thing to be setup properly when performing a glue up. The white table that you refer to is just a section of plastic laminated shelving. Glue can easily cleaned or scraped from the laminated surface so that it can be used over and over. Blue tape is often used in my videos to protect a section of wood from becoming glued or stained from glue. You will often see me using plastic sheets when laminating. Also, I like to use clear packing tape to separate glue from a wood surface. I recommend that you watch a few of my videos over and over just paying attention to the glue up techniques.

Question, what species of wood do you use for the white? I'm starting to try this and making a few these jigs and simple patterns. I used maple for the white.. If it's the face grain exposed it stays pretty white.. But if it's end grain it get pretty muddy when stained. And it looks like most of these designs will be end grain.. And btw.. These videos are amazing.

Greg H The white in this inlay is maple. All of the wood inlay banding that I make are face grain. It takes some planning to make face grain wood inlay bandings. However, the end result is so much better than end grain. Follow the video as a road map.

@@bobsimmons9126 I got my jigs made the 22 1/2 degress and the 45. they're ok... Then gave this an honest to goodness shot today.. FAIL!!! heh heh.. I successful got the diamond pattern which I was most worried about. Made my maple stock about 7/8's inch thick and 1 3/4's wide.. I made the walnut stock match.. Test cut 3 peices of walnut in a triang pattern, and mocked it up and looked decent.. I should have cut a 4th and I would have seen the oncoming problem.. Cut the rest of the walnut,, excitedly test fitted again and discovered my error, walnut is to thick.. Right? Should I have made the thickness of the 7/8's divided by 2?

Greg H The thickness of the walnut and maple should be the same. The width of the walnut needs to be one half of the maple. Cut the walnut triangles like what is demonstrated in the video. Make sure the measurements are exact. Use stops on the sleds to make
