Lower key or not, I love this! The freedoms she takes with the tempo, her ability to switch from forte to piano on a dime, and the wacky “malfunctioning doll” realness she brings to it are all incredible.
This can't be right, no human can sound like this. I am searching RU-vid for everything she has sung. Acting great, voice wonderful, knees and legs, not so great!
I saw her do this at the Met, early on in her career. I was used to dainty dolls, like me. Tiny frame, tiny voice. Then she comes on with that huge voice, broad face like Sutherland. I thought: This is the scariest doll I've ever seen. My hair was blowing back from the force of her voice. I've loved her ever since. This production is a bit of a misfire, though.
I totally love Diana, but I can't help my opinion that there are better versions of this aria than what she did here. This version is so odd in a weird way really.
Даже жалко: такой голос - и в такой фриковой постановке... Это ж фееричная "Царица Ночи"! Она может сыграть так, что под впечатлением неделю будешь ходить! А тут как-то бледненько (вокал, разумеется, великолепен).
Beautifully sung, of course - but I find this positively spooky, almost nightmarish. I much prefer Patricia Janeckova's charming and funny performance.
Maybe its because we prefer seeing her as the Night Queen.. for me Diana Damrau really suits as a graceful dark queen.. while Patricia's young face really fits to be a doll...
I love her use of the dinamics and she is an excellent actress on stage, but I'm not a fan of her vibrato. I think it's too much for this particular aria for my particular taste.
I like Diana Damnrau ,but some of her choices when she went super high to kinda flex or something that took me out of the experience ,also why is she dressed like an off brand Walt Disney's Cinderella ? Her comedy and overall acting was superb ... But i've seen her in better roles/performances
